The story goes that poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz had just been released from prison after serving a term for his influential views on communism in Pakistan. Noor Jehan stood outside waiting for the poet to appear. The party of friends and family that had gathered to celebrate moved to his house to rejoice. Faiz requested her to sing. One of the songs she sang was based on his nazm, Mujh Se Pehli Si Mohabbat Mere Mehboob Na Maang. She composed a tune for it on the spot without the use of any musical instrument. The musical quality of her rendition mesmerised everyone. Faiz would later credit her as the co-author of his poem because he believed no one could sing it with such perfection.

Beautifully explained Ms. Sayema. This is a masterpiece of Faiz's poetry and you have opened the door for deeper meanings if anyone wishes to enter.
With all the respect and appreciation for what you are trying to do to help our beloved Urdu, I want to say that you seem to have missed the point here. "Youn na tha, main ne faqat chaha tha youn ho jaye" actually means, "It wasn't so, I just wished it to be that way". The reason I've singled out this line is that I feel this line is the pivot that the whole poem revolves around. This line is what gives the context to the whole poem. Overall, this poem is more about the poet's inability to love like before because of the awakening he've had, to the atrocities in the world. I hope I've been able to convey what I wanted to say, please feel free to discuss more. Once again, kudos to you for what you are trying.

Madam you have not studied the background of this great poem . It is not as you have translated it ,though it may sound beautiful if go by its word meaning. The poet is referring it to the creation of Pakistan. Here the beloved is none other than Pakistan and after getting independence from Britain he has thought now there is no worry other than this but within few years failure of the respective governments and no end in the atrocities on the new nation,he wrote this heart breaking poem . It was a rebellion against the system prevailing in Pakistan at that time.

The atlas o kamkhab were how the ruling class was conducting itself even as the masses were bleeding, seething in pain and suffering disease, without fulfillment of the dreams of an independent country. It is a disillusionment of a people with freedom from a colonial oppression where nothing changes. Poetry is not a translation but a context, a story, a statement.

In “Mujh Se Pehli Si Mohabbat”, Faiz Ahmed Faiz uses the metaphor of the beloved not to describe an individual, but to represent Pakistan, his homeland. This transforms the poem into a powerful commentary on patriotism, disillusionment, and the painful realities of systemic oppression within the country, with a particular focus on the negative impact of Pakistan’s military establishment. 1. The Beloved as Pakistan: • The “beloved” symbolizes Faiz’s romanticized vision of Pakistan-a land full of hope, beauty, and potential. In the early years of Pakistan’s creation, Faiz saw the country as a place of promise, a land full of aspirations for freedom and justice. The “beauty” of the beloved represents the cultural richness and potential of the country. • The beloved’s eyes, likened to stars, reflect the dreams of a prosperous and free nation, as Faiz once envisioned for his homeland. 2. A Harsh Awakening - The Role of the Pakistan Army: • As the poem progresses, Faiz’s idealism begins to clash with the harsh realities of his country’s situation. The Pakistan Army’s role in suppressing democratic movements, its political interventions, and the military’s dominance over the country’s governance led to a deep sense of disillusionment. • The references to “bodies sold in bustling markets” and “blood splattered on the streets” become more than just poetic images; they represent the violence, oppression, and control exerted by the military establishment over the people of Pakistan. These images underline the suffering of the masses, who were often subjected to brutal military rule, political instability, and economic injustice under authoritarian regimes. 3. Beyond Romantic Patriotism: • Faiz acknowledges the continuing beauty of Pakistan, but he realizes that it can no longer blind him to the suffering caused by military dictatorship and societal inequality. His personal love for the country evolves into a broader commitment to justice and freedom for all its people. • This shift marks Faiz’s move from a romantic nationalist to a socially conscious poet, one who recognizes the destructive role the military played in the country’s struggles. His disillusionment with the military’s grip on power deepens as he becomes more involved in political activism, advocating for social justice, democracy, and human rights. 4. Timeless Relevance - The Ongoing Struggles: • Faiz’s reflections on Pakistan’s systemic injustice and military oppression remain relevant today. The country continues to face challenges related to political instability, military dominance, and economic inequality. The struggles of ordinary citizens, oppressed under authoritarian control, echo the themes Faiz explored in his poetry. • The military’s continued influence in Pakistan’s politics, coupled with economic and social unrest, makes Faiz’s observations on oppression even more significant in contemporary Pakistan. Conclusion: A Poem That Echoes Today’s Realities in Pakistan Faiz’s realization in “Mujh Se Pehli Si Mohabbat”-that personal love and patriotism alone cannot mask the glaring inequities of society-resonates powerfully in Pakistan today. The “beloved” homeland, which Faiz once adored despite its struggles, continues to suffer under the grip of military control and authoritarian governance. Economic disparity, political instability, corruption, and human rights abuses remain widespread, with the military playing a central role in maintaining the status quo. The imagery of “blood splattered on the streets” and “bodies sold in markets” reflects the harsh, oppressive reality still experienced by many in the country. Faiz’s call for a deeper commitment to justice and humanity reminds us that merely romanticizing the past or idealizing the present is insufficient. His words urge us to confront uncomfortable truths and strive for meaningful change, a mission that remains as urgent today as it was during his time, especially given the continued influence of the military in shaping the country’s future.

Good attempt, but its a deep poem with several layers in meaning. You have rendered it literally. What the poem conveys majetically is that in a world ridden with countless sorrows, tragedies and tales of limitless oppression across centuries, a sensitive humane heart will struggle to find solace in romance. This poem underlines Faiz's overriding theme in his poetry which is torn between love and longing on one side and idealism on the other.
