I always loved Miriam Makeba. This song was written by Lamine Bechichi, who was the first director of Algerian Radio after Independence. Song was recorded at the studio of Algerian Radio. I have recently watched an incredible film by Mila Turajlic, called Ciné-Guerrillas: Scenes from the Labudovic Reels. The story of the film, that also captures the above mentioned recording, is about Stevan Labudovic, who was a favourite cameraman of Yugoslav leader Tito. He was sent by Tito to help Algerians in their fight for independence from French. He was filming the war on Algerian side and his films were used to counter fight the French propaganda. Since Algerians didn't have as strong army as French did, these films helped them in their struggle to bring their voice into the world. These films were also shown to the Algerian people during the war, to motivate them further in their righteous path to freedom. Stevan Labudovic, who passed away in 2017, considered himself as Yugoslav and Algerian. If you have a chance to see this beautiful documentary, do not miss it.
