You should add the 100 grit stone as soon as possible, going from 50 to 140 is too large of a jump, getting the 100 grit will make removing the scratch pattern WAY easier.

Yeah.. higher grits would take forever and back to get deep low grit scratches out.. smaller stepups save time and give better result in the end.. also not contaminating higher grits with low grit dust is important
@timbo4374
@timbo4374 5 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more. I have both, and if you need to go to the 50 grit, the 100 grit makes it a whole lot easier to get those deep scratches out of your edge. Besides that, f you are only removing small chips, you don't necessarily need to go all the way to 50 grit, and the 100 may be adequate for the job, The less metal you remove the better.

You deserve a major thumbs up and great results on it. It's like it's impossible to get rid of those stupid scratches. I try to get rid of them, but I can never do it, AND IM ONLY SHARPENING WITH SHORT BEVELS! you're doing it with basically with the tallest bevel, a scandi grind, I can't imagine. That would drive me insane. Great job.

I used to sharpen with a clamp system and I found if you bring the clamp closer to the handle to get the heel of the blade and it lowers your angle at the tip, just bring your tip forward a little and that will make your angle more acute. It will also help you match the angle of the arm side to side at the heel.

Do the stones on that system load fairly quick? Being they are so small? I just recently bought all new equipment after my sharpmaker stones wore out. I went with all benchstones and strops cause I figured they wouldn’t load as fast.

bp69 they all do eventually. Then you can make them flat again with a diamond plate but it takes a long time and not really worth it. It’s not they are completely worn out just not giving me the crisp edge they used to.

Am I the only Australian with a KME system thats wondering where you can get a replacement knob/handle for it? What it comes with makes it such a pain in the ass to use compared to some other systems and in the US you can get decent replacements for like $1.50 on amazon but they won't ship them to aus. I'm at a loss on where to get them here. I mean its a piece of plastic with a 1/4 inch thread in it. It shouldn't be that difficult to come by but there it is.

To get a proper mirror edge you have to do a few things differently. You have to remove the previous scratch pattern from the stone before it. To do this you can start by swiping the rods from one side to the other. Then the next stone go up and down. That way you have the pattern going in one direction and you can see the pattern removed on the next stone going the other way. Then I. Your finer grits you don't want to go back and forth you just want to take it one direction. So no left to right or up and down, just one direction, lift and then start again. The other thing is the films are not idea for good mirror edges. Preferred to use diamond spray or paste and wood blocks (basswood or mdf) or leather strops. Using 4 micron, 1 micron,. 5 micron,. 1micron Should get you where you want to go. It's pretty much technique. Also the diamond strops will give your edge a bit more toothy edge unlike other abrasives. Tip Per big brown bear.

Just curious, but have you tried the convex arm for the KME? Was wondering if it would work for a Bark River convex grind or if it would totally mess it up.
@49giants3

Tim Gannon I think the placement of the knife makes a difference. I tried it, but it left an uneven microbevel on the tip. It came out sharp as hell though. I placed the clamp in the middle as well as Pete

I got Aurora and Gunny, and I just freehand. Personally I feel scandi is the easiest by following the preexisting bevel; convex is second easiest, just relax your wrist and use light pressure.

Skywalker96214 yeah a convex is super easy idk how people need to use a mousepad to sharpen convex
@Skywalker96214
@Skywalker96214 6 жыл бұрын
To be honest, every knife I ever sharpened ended up becoming a convex... including my Moras, they became scandi-vex. I think it's because people sharpen their knives differently, and making convex bevel simply feels most natural to me.

Beautiful job...but the insane length of time it takes to put these proper awesome edges on a knife, is the reason I went to using a consistent angle slow speed belt sharpening system. Even uses a leather belt and compound for quicker stropping.

I love wider primary bevel with zero grind / scandi grind knives - Hultafors and Terrava Jaakaripuukko. Their primary bevel gets narrow at the tip and I think it makes the tip slightly more robust. I doubt those KME-like sharpeners can do that. They will only make the primary bevel at the tip wider or same.

The steel on the bushcraft black doesn’t seem to like to wear a mirror polish, I put one on mine and instead of the smooth, shiny bevel I’ve put on knives like my garberg, the only quality that I could describe the bushcraft bevel having was that it was exceptionally flat.

Honestly you should be pushing the stone into the blade not pulling it away. You will get a sharper edge with a cleaner burr. Pushing the stone into the blade then lifting it off and not doing the pull back stroke will make your edges insanely sharp and this is the best way to use one of these guided angle sharpeners. There's a great video by work sharp where they use the push in, pull back, and the sawing motion and use a sharpness tester and the push in beats every other way. It leaves cleaner edges, a better burr, a less scratches. They even inspect it with a microscope to show you the micro scratches.

well, I thought so, until the kme revealed how wonky my previous whetstone inflicted grind was. Not to mention how many stones you’d need to get up to mirror.
