I’ve loved the resurgence of these digicams lately! I work at a camera store and recently picked up a Canon Powershot G9 and I’m absolutely blow away by the kind of images I’ve been able to create. Thank you for bringing more light to a style of camera that can make shooting fun again for a really great price!

I always enjoy the comparison shots with the expensive camera and the cheaper camera. I think it just shows the competence of the photographer and how he uses the equipment. Good to know that we can obtain pretty good shots without taking a mortgage on the house for a new camera.

The Lumix Leica point and shoot was one of my very first cameras. I literally used it til the day it just wouldn't even turn on anymore. Immediately bought the exact same camera and used that one until it died as well. It's what got me hooked on that brand of camera for life. Nothing ever hits quite like a Leica.

A Canon PowerShot SD1000 I bought at a thrift store for really cheap has become a favorite of mine, especially after loading an SD card with CHDK and gaining the ability to shoot DNG raw. I've been into film lately, but maybe I need to start making more videos about old digicams again

Back in the early aughts I was shooting simple corporate projects with the G2, and everybody liked the stuff. If they needed to go big, I turned to Genuine Fractals. These were very capable cameras for their day.
@TinyObservations

Very capable. I want to research the effects of file compression back then. When looking back at old websites the files looked terrible. It had to be the compression right?
@GregCarrick

I use some digicams myself, and enjoy them. Looking at your posted images the digi loses all the variations on the hair colour, and transitions to the highlights are very abrupt. I wouldn't have shown the digi images to my client, as I wouldn't be happy with them against what came out of the R6
@TinyObservations
@TinyObservations Жыл бұрын
I agree totally, Greg. I wouldn't normally deliver those images, but my client was in on the test. She ended up liking the effect from the digicam and now other clients have actually requested it on upcoming shoots. I could manipulate the R6 files to look like the digicam, BUTTT I think the digicam does something else that's pretty important...it helps the subject relax since they aren't posing in front of a big, fancy, professional camera rig. I'm thinking this could be a good way to warm subjects up in the future before bringing out the R6.

As for myself, I kept all my digitals cameras, from 1.3 MP to the 19mp I have now.... and from time to time I pull one out to use... and yes the feeling of using one, besides the familiarity with them, is working within their limitations (basically enough light, and not excessive contrast) makes one THINK about the shot more, but ultimately it is a pursuit of a novelty because the frustrations of processor speed, auto focus, and ISO will catch-up and one will be back to using an updated camera... (only to repeat the cycle later!)
@TinyObservations
@TinyObservations Жыл бұрын
I bought an old Leica M digital so I wouldn’t be tempted with high ISO and auto focus like on my canon digitals

Interesting to see this kind of David vs. Goliath comparison. Overall, I prefer the whites of the G5, but the R6 is obviously much smoother. At 1:56 I prefer the R6, but not at 2:02. 😅

Olympus XZ1 made me love photography again, every shot I take, aint real life, I guess that makes sense, I grew up shooting Canon 400D as a teen, and that was a special camera, extremely painful to use, very situational, in poor light, forget it, needed a tripod 50% of the time in even dim lighting, but Christ when it got light? Amazing photos, I shot some of my best photos with that damn thing.
@louhautdavid6451
@louhautdavid6451 Жыл бұрын
Great shooting ! I also prefer the old camera results, but I'm watching this video on my phone. If I was a professional, I probably wouldn't choose this gear if I had to print large. You know that these old cameras have limitations. If professional photographers rely on these old cameras, it's probably in a niche. Whatever, beyond their low cost, the nostalgia effect and the benefits the share images in communities, digicams can force you to put your efforts in the composition rather than expecting miracles from high technology.
@TinyObservations
@TinyObservations Жыл бұрын
The limitations are what make us get creative! If these were going to print I definitely wouldn’t use the old camera, but I knew she was likely only posting to Instagram, like 75% of my other clients. Wedding and families make prints…most others are just for web.

I've got 2 pocket cameras. One is a Lumix DMC-ZR3 and the other is an Olympus Tough TG-810 both take decent pictures. My main camera is a Canon D7 and the quality is better but the thing weighs a tom especially with the expensive 24 to 70 zoom. I would like to get a Canon G9 but the prices are going up on cameras because videos like this are pushing them...lol
