I was just thinking while watching the video: "Man what a clean shop, especially for a mold making studio/factory." I remember doing a lot of casting with aluminum and it was such a pain keeping things clean. Having the shelves and drawers, thats the key. I gotta spend the next year adding more shelving to my shop.

Hey man, If you try to 3D print a flat surface the printer never really like that. Always try to put them in a 45 degree angle. Takes a bit more support but the results are way better!

Something slightly poetic about the ending of this vid - 10 years the tower bases slept and being lost to technology, revived in the modern day, cast into resin and the mold put onto the pile to sleep for another 10 years.

I have mixed feelings about 3d printing, when it works it's like magic, when it fails it's like a kick in the nads...especially when things stick to the sheet and everything has to be emptied and cleaned. I'm glad I have the option to 3d print but it rarely gets done without a boatload of frustration.

anyone 3D printing bases in resin *do not print them flat against the plate if you can help it* put them at a 45 degree angle, the problem with printing them flat is that it can create suction which forcibly peels them off of the printbed and ends up smooshing them into your FEP and breaking it (which results in Resin literally getting EVERYWHERE all over the machine etc. it's a real bastard to get off trust me and you need to buy a new FEP, plus there's a chance it could even break your screen which is probably the most expensive part to replace on a printer and, probably, better off just buying a new printer if you've got the sub $300 ones). This may result in one corner of the base being a little droopy but thems the breaks, honestly if you've got access to a FDM printer, which isn't useful for printing minis but IS really useful for printing bases since you don't need to worry about suction and can get a nice flat base, plus they're at a size where layer lines isn't really going to be an issue since you're probably just going to put stuff ontop of them like flock etc.

The thing with 3d printing, is you need to think about how much it opens up distribution for a sculptor. 20 years ago you could go to GW, cast it yourself, etc. All of that is expensive though Now a sculptor can shoot their stuff out in the wild, take crazy chances on weird sculpts and find their niche audience globally. Same sort of thing you see now with indie RPG publishers making small games like forbidden psalms. (Im in canada Trent, but Ill happily print you some stuff or send you a big box of misprints if youre interested.resin printing is magic)

I can't believe I didn't leave a comment on first watch! I guess I'll have to do it now. You and I have different 3D printing experiences, and I think part of that is just how much we play with the dang machines. I've had my machine for two and a half years and LOVE it. I use an Elegoo Mars, and besides wanting a bigger print bed, it's really great for me. I have my settings dialed in, I use water washable resin with it, and it gets monthly, if not weekly or daily use. What I like about it is that it makes things accessible for me. For example: I need a box to put my curved needles for bookbinding in. No problem; I looked up a box on MyMiniFactory and I've been working on the print. True, the dang thing is taking WAY TOO LONG, because it's failed twice, but that comes with the territory. For me, it's an exercise in problem solving and patience, so when I do get that final box, I'll be pleased as punch. I do get what you're saying though. I used to get those Patreon big bundles of minis and then . . . paint . . . two from the whole set. Wasn't very economical. These days, if I want a mini, I'll wait for it to go up as a single. Sometimes it costs more, but for now I don't mind that. I paint miniatures so rarely now that it's less of a deal to me. There's problems with the technology as with all things, but I'm cool with working through it. Obviously YMMV, which is fair! Different opinions can be a good thing . . . . . . which leads me to my fairly opinionated advice based solely on my own experience: you're printing those bases wrong. Angle them up by 45 degrees, give them some space (don't cram the plate full) let the program make some supports, and then go in and fix them after the fact. As for having that many failures in a row, you probably need to change your FEP. AND: if you want a better printer, go for Elegoo, because their customer service is rad, unlike Anycubic, where you're sort of stuck with what you get. Obviously, this is all my experience, so look up some videos to help . . . but I don't want to see you give up on the technology because of ability alone! PS: those Tau bases ROCK.

It is an interesting point for whether the mass application of 3D printing is really the best for the hobby. Aside from the "more minis is better minis" philosophy, the application of 3D design in our models has made them more sculpturally impressive sure. But at the cost of enjoyment to paint and ease of painting. Hand sculpted plastic and resin miniatures will always be the best in my eyes.

The point made about models havig warmth from them being handmade rings true. I saw a blue morris traveller 1000 on the way to see my father and he said something interestig after having spent a life reading hand drawn maps that swtched to digital in the last few years. He said maybe its that the human eye is more attuned to the warmth(imprecision) of a hand drawn line as opposed to a uniform perfect digital on
