whoops, uh - YES, way back in my Endymion video I DID say that Artemis loved Orion, but in my defense, I was a much less diligent researcher back then, and that little nugget of "common knowledge" was EVERYWHERE I LOOKED. I had to do some serious digging this time to find where it came from and how unsupported it really was. I wasn't kidding - that interpretation was so appealingly tropey that it eclipsed the MUCH larger body of work that completely contradicted it, and even completely unrelated articles and descriptions will mention "btw Artemis and Orion were totally smoochin" like it's a Thing. Mythology is fun like that! 😅 -R

I mean, they definitely weren't smooching, but whether there was romantic emotions on the table at all, or if it was one sided, or whatever is up for debate. The work saying there was is still part of the body of work. And as you pointed out, debating the canon of theology is ultimately a work of absurdity unless the behavior is so wildly out of character it has to be explained another way.

Personally, my favorite version of the Orion legend is a bit of a mixture of several of these. Basically, Orion meets Artemis and she kinda goes "Hey, you're a pretty good hunter, want to hang out?" So they start hunting together and Orion basically becomes Artemis's best friend/favorite cousin. Apollo gets jealous because "why don't you hang out with me anymore?" and throws a hissy fit, and then sics a giant scorpion on Orion.

For the "love" version of the myth I had always heard it that Artemis and Orion were just great friends and the "love" part was just in Apollo's head. Which would imply that it was more of a platonic love. And thus Apollo was just jealous that another dude was hanging out with his sister and got him killed. Wouldn't have been the craziest or pettiest thing a Greek god had ever done.

There are other version too that, when Artemis left and Apollo came to check Orion, they kind got hot and heavy(Cus Orion here is more into guys rather than girls, although he still is attracted to them), then when when they were done, Apollo just instantly denies everything and leaves, which just confuses the hell out of Orion shruggs it off. I’m pretty sure that was like a dramatic way for some random poet or Historian to say “Artemis is virginity goddess, do not get close or she’ll kill you” if I remover correctly the oldest version of the story goes that after his eyes healed, he decides to go travel around some places and ends up meeting Artemis along the way, then later after they got to know I leach other better they started a very friendly friendship(until you know what happens next and yea). I think that the original intention for that whole situation of Artemis and Orión was that platonic love exist and love can also be in between two friends getting along and bonding without the need to make it romantic or sexual.

It sounds like a "20XX" shitpost honestly. "The year is 20XX BC. The twins use bows at TAS levels of Perfection. Because of this, the winner of a contest depends solely on last arrow launched. The Rock-Paper-Scissors metagame has evolved to ridiculous levels due to it being the only remaining factor to decide matches."

Orion dies. Zeus puts him in the sky as a constellation. Orion: "Hey, this is kinda nice..." Zeus ALSO puts the scorpion there with him. Orion, like drunk Jim Lahey: "Julian!" *Falls down stairs*

I love how Gaea is basically the control mechanism/killswitch for the gods. Like, when they start getting too strong or talking shit, she makes a new kaiju or dozen to kick the crap out of them for a while. You'd think the gods would stop tempting fate, but... here we are. Lol.

Huh. The only things I "knew" (heavy air quotes) about Orion before this were: -He was a hunter -Artemis was his friend/love interest -He's a constellation And now I find out that the one that gives him any sort of character at all is kinda not true. Yay.

Anything is up to cannon, as Red said. Its up to you if you want to believe if he was her love interest or not. For Red, she believes Artemis is just very good friends with Orion. For me, i believe that Agrotora and Candaon have romantic feelings with eachother. Its your choice.

@@thecatladytm7172 eh sort of? It's a little weird seeing a talking teddy bear flirt with anything with two legs. Especially when Artemis is also there and keeps calling the stuffed bear "darling". It's strange. But yes, I suppose it could be cute.

Huh. See I always liked the last Orion myth but I interpreted it as their being close friends, and Apollo misunderstands their friendship as sexual, gets creepy protective and tricks her into killing him. Sort of comphet in microcosm. I liked the idea of Artemis and Orion bonding over a shared sport. So it was less 'the only man she ever loved' and more a close friendship mistaken for romantic, because if that ain't the story of my life...
@clayxros5764 жыл бұрын
Which considering how many men Artemis liked, could still be considered accurate lol

*orion's death was first mentioned in Homer's odyssey where it is stated that Artemis slew orion in ortygia* *Hesiod in his book astronomy fragments (8BC - 7BC) that orion was blinded because he tried to assault a king's daughter . Orion later went to crete and spent his time hunting with artemis . Once he boasted that he'd kill all the animals gaia ( earth) sent a scorpion to kill him yet the author pseudo -apollodorus (2AD) says Artemis killed orion because he challenged or tried to assault her nymph opis thus both Apollo and Artemis killed him . so either way the earliest Version suggest that Artemis or gaia killed him not Apollo*

In some retellings, Apollo drove Orion mad because he didn't like how much time he was spending with his sister. And in others, his saying he's going to kill every animal in the world is translated to mean more of "I'm going to hunt every animal on earth", essentially saying that Gaia misunderstood what he said. (Hunt every single animal essentially meaning hunt at least one of every animal)
@jacobberg3732 жыл бұрын
No, that was just the Percy Jackson version, Apollo simply either sent the scorpion or tricked Artemis into killing him. The whole "I'm going to kill every animal on Earth" was due to good old hubris and getting way into killing shit with arrows.
