There are so many misconceptions about disabilities, including blindness. I talk about some of the misconceptions I experience the most, and how society can help alleviate them.

I hate that a lot of people think blind equals seeing total darkness when in reality it’s so many different things in between the spectrum of being legally blind and totally blind. The media portrayal of people with disabilities definitely plays a huge part in people’s perceptions of people with disabilities.

I have heard from many other blind youtubers that people think we are either also deaf or mentally disabled. A lot of times they will talk to other people instead of asking you things directly. I am not really 100% out as a blind person to the world. I do not use a cane yet and I do still try to hide it the best I can so I havent really experienced those sort of things. But sometimes I feel like some family friends are nicer to me cuz of my vision or help me a lot more than others.

Yes I have experience that, especially people talking to the person I am with instead of speaking to me directly, but it really only happens when I have my cane out. And That’s good that some of your family members are nice and helpful

Oh, I can't tell you how many times I've been either patronized by people or ben told rudely "you can't see that", and other rude statements.

No one is Visually Impaired. This is the stereotype that drives me up the freaking wall, because there are so many things that go on in the eyeball that people can't see.

I'm visually impaired and some people think I can see because I can see their hands when I can only see shapes and colors. I'm near sighted due to cerebral palsy and my vision get worse every year

Great video! I recently have been told I don’t “look blind” and was shocked because it was said almost in a way like “you are overthinking your disability; you don’t need a cane.” I think videos like this are great to combat misconceptions because assumptions can be done without thinking but, like you said, they can be hurtful. I do agree that blind and visually impaired characters with better portrayal are so needed!! I have only found one that I can watch and enjoy (Covert Affairs-Auggie).

I'm a cranky old fart of a blind guy with a sarcastic sense of humor. I find some sighted people to be very kind and helpful. Bless them. Others, not so much. People with disabilities scare the pants off the ablies because disability doesn't discriminate. Anyone can have one or get one and it could be them. Using my cane helps to make people aware that I don't see as well as they do. Some get it, some don't. We have to have patients and understanding for those who are slow and self absorbed to catch on. You go girl!

I too wish they would portray people with disabilities in the media accurately especially blind people. But drove me nuts growing up, as I would see somebody lose their vision in an episode then in the next scene they have a guide dog. And as a person who has had a couple of dogs, and in between lost my remaining vision you don’t just go get a guide dog in the next scene of your life. And be seen walking around confidently with the dog. It takes time and energy. There was a show a movie that came out in the late 90s called at first site and the man in there I remember seeing that when I had some vision, the man was walking around in the first part of the movie with a damn hockey stick as a cane. That just is not reality. And then later on they showed him with his retired guide dog and then him finally using a cane. And it just was portrayed very stupidly.

I would like some guidance on how you handle people who talk to you like too are less or stupid? I deal with this often at my work and I try to just make jokes or just shake it off. I think there’s a thin line between seeming defensive and standing up for yourself. Does anyone else feel this way?

That’s a hard one. I guess my best advice would be to ask them very calmly and politely to not speak to you like a child and to speak to you like they would any of your other coworkers

I just found your site, your great.I am 83 years old and have macular degeneration and my vision is getting pretty blurry, I am fortunate to have the vision I have but I resent people with the attitude that oh well, he’s 83 so what. You never get old enough to not miss your vision. I am thinking of trying a device called Nu Eyes, have you heard any pros or cons on this ? Love your site, thanks

Ralph Thomas hello and thank you for your kind words. I agree, anyone would have a hard time losing their sight regardless of their age. I haven’t heard of new eyes. Sorry I am not able to give you any information. There is a KZbin channel called the blind life where he reviews a lot of different technology. He may have something on his channel about it.

I’m also legally blind I also use my brain and memorize things like my home lay out etc. I utilize dragon and screen readers and my apple I pad to blow up screens . I was told I needed a rep payee I have been paying bills online on my own. I feel like my rights are being taken away. It’s what little independence I have left. Your advice?

@@CaylawithaC I was able to resolve it and you were right. They said it was in my best interest ( my dr ) but it was not mandatory that made me feel so much better. Grateful to be able to pay my own bills

For me who has a retinal dystrophy so my VI affects more tiredness colour and low light. Because Of that people think that wearing glasses makes me see perfectly fine which it doesn’t. I constantly get looked at like I’m different and can’t understand things. Like I don’t know why VI people get this kind of patronising discrimination

I agree that disabled people need to more portrayed in media, but where I draw the line is the Mary Sue type characters that have destroyed many franchises. There is a fine line between diversity in movies and tv, and making the whole show or movie all about the particular minority group. That's by biggest problem with wokeness in media.
