I remember when this album came out. I was 23 and dealing with the same stuff Lauryn was. I had it on repeat for months. I felt seen. Such a classic. You probably already know this, but @DissectPodcast did a special mini-season on this album for 20th anniversary. On another note, there's something about the less than perfect format of your show that I really love. Feels more natural. Thanks for adding a needed voice to the hip hop conversation.

I love this channel. I am so tired of many in this current generation being inspired by previous generations but disregarding and disrespecting it at the same time. They want to rewrite the rules of engagement and just be so dismissive and I despise it. Thats why I love Rap Latte!

I have this album cover as a tattoo ❤ The part discussing the skits of the classroom; one of the first things I ever remembered was that there was a roll call; they called out Lauryns name and she didn't answer; she wasn't in the class = The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, she missed this classroom/missed these lessons, each song is a lesson that she missed. ❤

I’m 20 years old, the day I turned 18, my mother played “To Zion” and sang it to me because she listened to that song all the time when I was a baby. Lauren Hill is her favorite artist of all time just off this one album and she passed this album down to me and now Lauren is one of my all time favorites. This album is not just one of the best hip hop or r&b albums of all time, it’s one of the best pieces of black art of all time. It’s bigger than any one genre. And to me that puts Lauren on a small list of black artists whose music and impact on the culture is way beyond whatever genre of music they made. This album is part of the soundtrack to our f**king race bro like yall don’t understand…

Zion is such a beautiful song but it never really hit me until it played after my wife told me she was pregnant, and it brought me peace. I finally heard the song and understood the emotion. Ms Hill will be with us forever.

I’m around the 15:00 min mark and I think what you were reaching for of why Lost Ones has that reggae/dancehall feel is because it’s a sample/interpolation of Bam Bam by Sister Nancy, a Jamaican artist. Kanye also sampled that song for Famous. Lauryn is one of my favorite rappers of all time! Idk what it is but Geminis truly have a way with words cuz the list of talented rappers is STACKED. I would say that in modern times, someone like Doechii shows great promise in being equally as talented in rapping and singing (I hadn’t realized that What It Is was her as well) I would have to say others who rap and sing on a pretty equal footing would be people like Missy, CeeLo, and maybe Doja Cat. I’ve been loving what you guys are doing with that podcast by the way! It’s so fun and educational to hear some of these topics from people who’ve had skin in the game. Hope you guys have an even bigger 2025! Happy New Year~~💖🎉

Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Missy Elliott, Floetry (duet), Brandy (she has a Rap EP, but her mom strongly managed her imagine), BoneThugs&Harmony are uniquely themselves, and they can harmonize, but their lyrics are very HipHop. However, they are overlooked Recent contemporaries that i know are very limited: Doechii, Smino, Samara Cyn, Beyonce after she said she is a Black artist and she will be giving her ancestors their flowers (less Pop focused and she can rap)!

29:18 I see Nikki as fruit of the tree of Lauryn, the Lil Kim nods were from the marketing and label. They straight ripped Lil Kim’s looks and I believe that’s why Nikki never truly accepted the Lil Kim comparisons. Nikki is so multifaceted like Hill and I can see why she would be insulted by the being put in the Lil Kim box who is known for not writing, having to be taught to flow .
@sarahfortune77604 сағат бұрын
Especially when Nicki considers Foxy more influential to her than Kim.
@leoneldelarosa8142 күн бұрын
There are two precedents to the kind of stuff Lauryn was kinda going for imo. On one hand, there's the combination of r&b singing and good rapping, and while there was not a single artist that could do both as well as Lauryn, I first heard that combination in TLC, and I think it's gotta be a precedent. On the other hand, if there's an artist that embodied the smoothness of Soul and had a spiritual energy and an aura that I think works as a precedent, that's gotta be Sade. And in that regard, to me the only other 90s album that contained that level of perfection as Miseducation did in '98, was Love Deluxe in '92. In many ways, Sade is still criminally underrated in the musical discourse -- primarily because most of those conversations are centered in the US, and for us International music fans, Sade is just as important as Lauryn when it comes to producing life-changing female albums. Also, LOVE the podcast. Greetings from Mexico.

I think Doja Cat is a serviceable if not good rapper singer, and Missy Elliot is a quadruple threat in terms of rapping singing writing and producing (and unlike Miss Hill Missy's shows up and shows out at her concerts), the only one who I can think who can rap rap and sang comparable to Lauryn Hill is Queen Latifah.

I can't abide this dismissal of many Black artists while propping up of Amy Whinehouse (who was majorly takented) and Drake. Toure and your misogyny is a bit willful ignorance because the female lyricist because they owning their sexuality and women can be influential and sexual beings. I dont agree with Nikki, Drake being socially concious. Megqn Thee Stallion traumazine is very enlightening and her sexuality is addressed for HER and not for the male gaze!
