I know EXACTLY what you mean. You cannot filter on the M3 because the fucking lanes are so narrow while they fuck about. Whats that? The so called "smart" motorway has got rid of the brake down lane to increase traffic flow? Whats that? A SINGLE car has broken down? MOTORWAY FUCKED. TALE BACKS FOR MILES

Average speed cameras on motorways are something I especially hate. By slowing cars down to 50mph (and it takes their average speed over a distance so you're forced to do 50), you're putting more cars into one space at any given time, which surely must contribute to congestion (as well as increased emissions).

Spot on about the trustworthiness of those "smart" signs - often find myself ranting to my wife about them. The closest thing to "smart" motorways is using something like Waze which actually shows you real-time traffic speed & incidents. I find those signs are wrong 90% of the time and Waze is right 90% of the time. Rarely drive without it now.

Baron you are so right, I'm a truck driver and I work nights. Closures everywhere I go - M5 M4 M42 M6 M1, people just wouldn't believe it, that's not even mentioning A roads. Smart motorways don't even work once they are finished unless it is purely done to fine the motorist. They still get traffic jams on the M4 near Bristol and on the M42, it really is a total waste of time and money. By the way I have been on the M42 numerous times in the early hours and the speed limit signs have shown 40 then 20 then 40 then national limit ... and for what ? Just me and a reliant 3 wheeler on the road !!!! Bull Bull Bull..

You cant say the sign is lying when you don't know what the full situation is. If you want safer, higher quality road surfaces, you have to accept that you will face traffic. You have to consider that the government build and upgrade things to fit most people in the population. They do work at night time more because most people are spending time with their loved ones.

I think you make a valid point about the 'bullshit' albeit it's fortunately(?) only a minority of drivers who - out of arrogance, stupidity or frustration - actually choose to ignore the reduced speed limits because they think they know better (eg. that the stated reason for the delay is untrue). But here's why I think you're right about the "traffic engineering." I'm in SE London and regularly use the Blackwall Tunnel. There are currently proposals for additional river crossings downriver from Tower Bridge, including the possibility of another tunnel (at Silvertown) or a revised ferry. For quite some time, things have been at the 'consultation' stage. A while back, I started noticing that whenever I'd go there (only ever on a bike, I know it too well to take a car there) there would probably be major queues. Not just the weekday rush hour but any time of day and even weekends, too.It was almost as if someone *wanted* that traffic chaos, so that all the drivers stuck in it would reach breaking point and be ready to say 'Please, give us something ... *anything* ... that will give us an alternative to this, and make it quick!' Can you actually "engineer [the conditions that can create] traffic"??? I do believe you can!

When it does get completed, your journey will be no quicker than it was, so your 3-4 years of delays is time you will not save at any point in the future.

Know exactly what you mean. The M4/M5 interchange in Bristol is now "smart" and every morning there is a queue on the M5 turn off usually with a 40 MPH limit, so what do they do? Put the same 40MPH signs up over the completely clear M4 heading to Wales... The best one I seen was after an incident on the M4 way before the tunnels in South Wales, after filtering to the front of the queue the accident was plain to see, the police let me and couple of other bikes through - there was no space for cars - literally NO traffic for the rest of the run bar the odd car coming on at the junctions and still the congestion signs lit up for miles with 40MPH restrictions in place due to the invisible congestion.

I have just been made aware of the purpose of "smart motorways". Caught speeding (68mph) on an empty M25 in a variable speed limit area. Dry roads, bright conditions, no traffic. 6 points and £650 fine. Glad to see that the police are addressing the problem motorist. Look for the easy buck officers that's the best way of effective policing.

You've got the definition for smart motorways mixed up. Generally the term is used for sections of motorways that allow the hard shoulder to be used as either a temporary or permanent running lane. In the case of the M3, the hard shoulder will cease to be, it will be converted into a fourth lane.

Is he editing the 60fps in a 30fps timeline. If he is then it will blur the video down from 60fps to 30fps. There must be something he's doing wrong in the edit that's making the blurring.

+RevvedUpBiker Ah I see what you mean. 60fps has always look a bit odd to me. Almost if footage has been slowed down - remembered - sped back up to normal speed - then rendered again. If that makes any sense.
@RevvedUpBiker
@RevvedUpBiker 8 жыл бұрын
ash bandicoot It could even be down to KZbin's compression methods. It's only on the top setting choice that you'll get the 60fps, all the other resolutions i.e. 480p will be down converted to 30fps and that's probably where the blurring occurs. I'm sure the Baron edited his 60fps in a 60fps timeline and outputted the video as a MP4 H.264 file at 60fps. It must be something KZbin needs sorting.

When motorways make you slow down to 40 through a certain point, it's not always so you don't run into the back of the cars backed up in the incident, it's mostly to make sure that the traffic in front can clear up so you don't catch up to it and people don't do the stupid "i see brake lights i should brake too!" crap that causes random traffic jams
@R1doorbar
@R1doorbar 8 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed that rant. Mainly because I agree with almost everything you said. I've been saying for about 10 years that to solve many of this country's problems more people will/should work from home. However, I do think HS2 is a good idea and could allow people who have to work in London/South East to afford there own home further north thereby helping to equalise north/south house prices. Hopefully with HS2 built a lot of road freight can move onto the existing West Coast Main Line making the roads even more less congested. Incidentally it takes me 15 mins to get to work and because I cycle traffic is never a problem. 😜

Couldn't agree more.. we've got the smart motorways here aswel.. out of nowhere it all of a sudden says "oh, this is now the maximum speed due to "this" .. and there is nothing there.. the signs turn on, everybody freaks out, steps on the brakes.. and that actually nearly causes the incident that the signs warn about... Same for roadworks, if they are actually working on the road, then fair enough.. but i've been driving past one bit of road that has now been having roadworks for 3.5 years and they are hardly ever working.. still.. the police is mooooore then happy enough to sit at that point with speed camera's though..

My main issue with the current motorway road works (mostly the m1 for me) is they lay out all the barriers and speed limits for 15miles or more but can only work on a few hundred meters at one time. Why not just put out the barriers for the few hundred meters and the speed limit with in a reasonable distance of the start of the road works... it just makes no sense. And speaking of saving 20min on the train, if there were no 50mile an hour speed limits and no "smart motorway" speed limits on my weekly 200mile north to south and south to north trips I would probably save that 20min on the road.
@chrisogrady28
@chrisogrady28 8 жыл бұрын
I don't know the point of the speed limit going down to 50 every time there might be a skip on the hard shoulder a few miles a head and 20 million comes before it slowly closing the nearest lane. If it's meant to be damage limitation I think hitting a road worker at 50 will kill the, just as effectively as hitting them at 70. They're just fucking up our fuel consumption by stopping constant speed (the whole point of motorways), and reducing the rate of flow of traffic, leading to jams. Fucking people in charge need to study fluid dynamics

Whenever they put 50mph during roadworks they add this useless average speed camera to actually money grab us! Another point to add is the government is trying to make all drivers go crazy and force most citizens to use public transport rather using cars! My only thing is if that is their main goal then they shouldnt have build the fucking roads in the first place! England Motorway network is the worst i have seen!

BVG we're also suffering the 'smart motorway' rollout in Melbourne. I believe the rationale is that you can add extra lanes by doing away with emergency lanes, and have the ability to close any lane if required by using the overhead 'smart' signage. Although that would require someone smart to be operating the smart overhead signage, so there's fuck all chance of that ever happening.

The M25 western stretch is the worst for the "smart motorway". It's all preset for certain times and what proves this is on a bank holiday when the roads are empty, all the signs are the same "50" "40" "Queue Caution" - it's so fucking annoying...

You'd be surprised at how many people bitch about a train being just a couple minutes late. I hear it all the damn time at the heathrow express station. Train delayed by 2 minutes: "I have to wait 17 minutes for the next train?!...that is completely unacceptable!"

How our road construction goes down here in Arkansas is.....ONE Hispanic dude working with FIVE white guys watching him work. And if ONE drop of rain falls...everyone is "Peace Out" on the construction crew.

I've rambled on like this when freezing my arse off on an interstate at 75 mph during a cold November, so I'm wondering if that's what is happening in this video or if there's something more troubling at play here, beyond signage?

I don't think the government has heard of the Singularity. They're still assuming the future will take as long to arrive as it did in the past. In thirty years railways be as antiquated as the horse and cart.

Could not agree more Baronmeister. My commute is 23 miles each way and takes 1hr 20 to 1h 40 each morning in a car. I've done it in 30 minutes on a Sunday evening. (How it should be.) This country and it's infrastructure is just simply a joke. It's almost comical some mornings as I sit and commentate at lorries / buses / accidents every SINGLE FUCKING MORNING!! Nice one for speaking out about it.

Whoever thought of the idea in the first place is a right nuthead. They are sooo dangerous. For example, if you break down IN BETWEEN 2 refuge points on say the M6, what do we do? Do we just scramble out of the car onto the bank where we see our car get smashed to pieces and others injured. What about if we come to a sudden stop and it's busy? It is pretty certain someone will run into the back of us... The highways agency's response to this is: "We monitor the motorways 24 / 7 and close any lanes if we need to to prevent this kind of thing happening". So we've learned 2 things there already: 1 being that this scheme is just a massive toy network where they can get money out of you and play around with the traffic; 2 being that they can't even justify themselves to a proper answer to my statement when I messaged them. Monitoring isn't enough. You don't get lane closed gantries every metre, how are we meant to feel safe? Another thing being, what happens if there's a traffic jam and emergency vehicles need to get by. They would usually use the hard shoulder, but oh wait they don't exist anymore! So how are the emergency services meant to get by to help someone out of a car who is potientially injured (therefore requiring ambulance, fire service, and maybe police) which is holding the traffic. Highways agency is a load of bo****x when it comes to motorways

They don't monitor it as well as they could.. the M1 runs practically though my back garden so I have a great view of how all this works , I've seen vehicles breakdown and usually the lanes shut within ten mins , but I've seen a van breakdown and all lanes be active for 40 mins too

I've also seen far more accidents now the hard shoulder has gone , there seems to be at least one a month just on the small bit I can see.. before that I saw only 2 accidents in 2 years, a lot of accidents come from rolling road blocks too, obviously the traffic behind the highways cars slow but then I see the braking get harder as more distance passes and on occasion somebody not concentrating smacking into the back of somebody..

Not sure whether this is entirely true or not but I heard they were originally called 'managed motorways' but then some committee or something somewhere decided that people don't like being 'managed' so they changed the name to 'smart motorways'.

Same shit in the Netherlands, and all the sheep just sit in traffic and think it's normal. I'm not Dutch but I've been living here for 7 years, and I'm just baffled by the passive attitude of the Dutch. I can't understand, it's just insane. And the money the authorities spend on resurfacing roads that were perfectly fine to start with?! Unbelievable. I point this out to my Dutch friends and they laugh and say it's indeed bonkers, and then just carry on with whatever they were doing never thinking about it ever again.
