After 8 years commuting into the over priced poop hole - i want to move further out. I cant see the benefits of being there anymore. I'll still be going in and out for meetings so the format of the vids shouldn't change, but i just want some more time in my life for things outside of 'work'.

+AdjrianNickelodeon Assuming 235 working days, you spent 3525 hours on your commute, which equals 147 days or almost 5 months (!). I worked for two months in a place with a daily 1 hour commute and even then I don't think I would have been happy doing that for a full year. Good luck figuring out a solution, and props to you for not going crazy after 5 years! :)

Urgh. I hate London (and pretty much all over cities) with a passion, and what's even more annoying is all these arseholes that make such a big fuss and act about moving there and then make this big song and dance about they are somehow better than you and then start slagging off anywhere that isn't London. Had more than a few 'friends' that moved to London because they thought it'd make them really trendy and that they'd end up millionaires and high flying city executives and shit... In the end the only thing they became was insufferable arse holes. I'll stick to my nice little house in the country, thank you very much. Zero traffic, complete peace and quiet, nice clean air and I can do what I want and when I want. Actually, I encourage more people to move to cities, that way I can make sure I can enjoy my nice little slice of countryside in peace :)

Moving out of London is what caused the problem, people start to commute and not always used public transportation or bicycles to go to London. The solution is make London a more livable city for the people and tourists and not for cars, that are almost the reason of the problem. Thats why you think London is full, its not, its full of cars trying to get into town! Good video as always :)

Yea, I think you're making the right choice. What you're describing isn't just London, it's every city, everywhere. Every area in general is overpopulated now and cities are about 50x much more so. The only thing that brings most people to cities is the job market, so if you don't NEED to be in the city, for whatever reason, there's the highest probability that you don't want to be there. Now there's obvious exceptions, like that ugly shit office building is some hipster bullshit right there (you guys have hipsters in England, right?), but I wouldn't say that's the norm. Houses in the city here go for like 600k (USD) for a town-house, typically around 800-1.3 mil for a small 3BR single family home. I go out of the city and you can get those same single family homes for like 300k with a bigger plot of land, no restrictive HOA fees, lower taxes, etc. Makes no sense to be in the city if you make your career else-where. If i ever become self-sufficient there's no way I'd live in a city. Preferably I"d live outside one so that I could go in to meet clients or whatever, but ideally I wouldn't live close enough one that I'm paying through the teeth for everything. It's insanity. What does BVG do? I've been subbed for awhile, I know it's something to do with journalism or photography (mcy photo journalist?), but don't know exactly. For something like that I'd think there's no reason to be IN the city.

Agreed BVG. Managed 4 years in London before I realised that the "vacuous" nature of the place wasn't for me or the business. Worked this out after finding myself rage filled and swearing under my breath at everyone who dared exist on the commute. Old women, vicars, tourists with their fucking red rucksacks. All fair game. Being a bell-end didn't suit me. Partial bell-ending is much more my speed.

Baron, move to Sutton, down south London. Pretty nice area, not too expensive, some of the lower crime rates in London and generally not too bad traffic. Town centre usually has a lot of people about. Downside, it's very near Mitcham, where I live, and it's a fucking shithole, and often many of the chavs from Mitcham will end up in Sutton, taking away from the peace of the area. Depends on your market though I guess, not a particularly rich area, nor are the surrounding areas, and it is somewhat out of the way of the rest of London. Generally though, pretty nice area and if you want to stay within range of the rest of London, it's very good as there's many travel links.

The trouble is that as London fills up, it spills out, so even less desirable areas are now expensive to live and work in (I believe the term is up and coming - aka a premium shithole). So maybe one option would be purchase some private cloud solution! let everyone work from home and then use some webconfrencing/collaboration software to work remotely. OK, I don't know what your business is so that may not be a viable alternative but it is an option for some...

Me and my family lived in Madrid, typical big city, lots of traffic, at least an hour commute, people running everywhere, well, trying to run, anyway, there is so much people that you cant even move... AND, astronomical prices for everything floor-related (120.000€ for a parking space? FUCK YOU!). So, we moved to a smaller city, Sevilla, still a "city", around 1.600.000 people in the metro area, still shit traffic sometimes, but... most of the time you can get from one point to the other without stopping anywhere but traffic lights. Commute time went from at least one hour, to 20 minutes tops. And prices both for our business and our home are much, much better. We dont regret it a bit.

+BaronVonGrumble I think what you're describing isn't necessarily new, particularly the affect London has on people over time (most of my family lives there) but that the cost/benefit point on the graph has been crossed. The point at which you're asking something is worth it, the question is 80% rhetorical.

Presumably you're involved in media? Seems like you might want to consider Manchester in that case.

I enjoyed living in London, but I always told myself I couldn't stay there unless I was a millionaire. It's unfortunate the UK economy is so London centric. Germany has a much more balanced approach with several cities in all corners of the country having strong economies, and no one city dominates. Same for the US. Just about every country is more balanced economically than the UK. In architecture though it's tough to survive if you're not in London. Just earlier this week I read of a good non-London firm going into liquidation, with the article blaming it on them not being in London. Didn't 44teeth's Alastair mention you were going to release videos of commuting on the R1 and 1299?

It's the same here where I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. When I moved here in 2008 it was ok on rents. But they more than doubled (almost tripled) since then, to the point where I'm considering moving out to another cheaper city not too far, sell the car and get a motorcycle like you. I'm done with high rent, heavy traffic and expensive (not to mention overcrowded) parking. Great topic video, keep them coming. Ride safe

You could always move to less central London. Where I live, my large 4 bedroom house is worth about £600k. 15 minute walk to a train station, from there I can get a train to central London that takes about 25 mins. No idea how that would be on a bike, but not all of London is that bad. I'm in Lewisham, though road maintenance is awful here so move to any of the neighbouring councils (Bromley is really nice).

How many bikes do you own and how many do you have regular access to ? Nice video, because you were on a bike and riding. I didn't really take any notice of that strange irritating blur of a noise in the background!! Oh was that you!! sorry. Ride safe and keep it shiny side up. Ps if you have a free bike lying around let me know. (I keep asking Honda but they don't seem to have any free bikes lying around, not even used ones. I live in hope of a used 1996 or so cb500)

We have a few suburbs in Perth WA where they used to have housing commission flats - the residents kept complaining how bad off they were - so they moved them all out - to "better" suburbs - gave the flats a coat of paint - some new landscaping and sold them to "Yuppies" - for an absolute fortune - oh - also re-badged the suburb to something more trendy. Also, I travelled the same road - in a car - to work for 11 years - rain or shine - decided to leave and start my own business - haven't looked back - and now - if I feel like it I can jump on my bike and ride a couple of the local roads, just to enjoy and unwind. Have a look - I've uploaded a couple of videos of such. Anyway keep on bringing those videos online - I enjoy then immensely. Thanks BVG

I never ever got the reason for living in London, I'm from Milton Keynes (Concrete city , roundabout hell or my favorite everything look's the same.) and you will see new people coming from London every week and as soon as they come here they calm down and love it the same could go for any where, And the fucking shop price's here in MK we have a hell of alot of shop's one of them debenhams a reasonable shop with reasonable price's but in London it's a fucking expensive as shit. Like two of the same dresses but in different location are £50-£100 different. Why would anyone live in London i have no idea.

You should come up north where actual decent human beings live. I don't understand why you would work in London unless you absolutely have to. I've been to London a few times (though more for touristy stuff) and it feels like the whole city is geared up to take AS MUCH of your money while giving you just about fuck-all in return.

I think most people in their 30's who've lived in London for a while get this. I moved there when I was 18 and left when I was 34. Did the commute into the West End every day for years on a Honda Fireblade. I hate the place, but it teaches you how to ride a bike properly in heavy traffic! I remember my first day like it was yesterday, I was shitting myself! After a few months I got used to it. Made me a good rider, that's about the only good thing that happened there...

This sums up my current predicament nicely - just graduated and looking for first 'proper' job, quite literally everything in my field is located in London. Live quite close to you in Hampshire - faced with 3 hour daily commute to the cost of a £5000 train season ticket, or move to London and pay the extortionate rent and living costs. Both aside from the fact there's no good bloody roads in London to ride the bike on!

The older you get the less inclined you feel to be close to “everything”. I love London and have lived in NYC, SF, DC... it’s just not worth the struggle anymore. Plus, detached garage, that is all.

Get you and your silk balaclava. I had hair once. I remember it well. The thought of riding in London scares the hell out of me. So busy. I could not do it. I am working on my guilty hangover at the moment. Sure tomorrow i will have my head in my hands saying why , why did it do it. Till then I am gonna have another drink. That is a crazy amount you are paying. Unbelievable. I feel your pain at the work parking matters mate. Work to live my friend, not live to work!!

Hi Baron... In some of your videos you talked about you not showing your face. Well I wanna agree to that. In no mean way I like the fact that you hold yourself "anonymous". But if you see other motovloggers, their content sucks after showing their face... I like the mystery that is concealed in the BaronVonGrumble mustache.. love phlox keep your shit together and all that

I work from home and it works really well for me. 5 mins from the kids school for those days when you have to be there as you say. I've done this for 7 years and if anything it's helped my business grow and enriched my home life. Not to mention saved me 2.5hrs a day in traffic and allowed me more time with my kids. If you can make the decision why would you chose to do it any other way. Initially I feared exclusion and failure from certain aspects of my business but that's total rubbish. As you say you can work from anywhere nowadays. You'll have more time to sort that R100 out too.

Where you started the video is quite a nice area, I used to spend a lot of time in Kingston-upon-Thames and the towns around it. You have the benefits of being out into Surrey (plenty of parks around, you can get a decent amount of house and garden without being a multi-millionaire) but you are only a few miles outside London and can get in and out easily. I used to commute into London on the A316 and A4, perfect roads for filtering.

Is it worth it? short answer: No. London is overly expensive, overly congested, unfriendly, uncaring and by and large a shit hole. The saddest part however is that if you were to bad mouth another place or city like this you would have people defending it and trying to extol it's virtues and good points, but with London I'v found the vast majority of the time that the people who live there or work there just agree with you.

I'm a design student and had dreams of working in London out of University because all the big and famous agencies are there but maybe that's just not how it is any more. When term time starts I'm going to have to commute because it's so expensive. I thought Elephant and Castle was supposed to be a shithole not somewhere you would pay a premium to live. I guess as you get further from the river everything is "up and coming" now

I used to work post in Soho... Gets fucking annoying going in and out of central every day but I do think that it's better to be in that area for that line of work... You are near your competition, you can benefit by being in the centre of what's happening, clients sort of expect you to be around Soho and I think you can run the risk of losing good staff if you move out of Soho. You're right about the cost though, where I worked the amount of money they jacked on to the lease each year was fucking ridiculous. Fair play to you though I'm not poopooing your potential move I don't know your business but I assume you are doing well and that wherever you go your clients will follow
