In case you’re interested in some Oscar history this is the movie that got Kathy Bates her Academy award for best actress. She is a remarkably versatile actress in drama, horror, and comedy. When she accepted the award she thanked James Cann saying she truly was his number one fan. If you ever get a chance to see her in Fried Green tomatoes, she and the rest of the cast gave one of the most underrated performances of that year. It’s truly a beautiful movie.

Fun fact: Misery was written by Stephen King as a response to the critics from his fanbase who didn’t appreciate his different take of storytelling with “Eyes of The Dragon”. Stephen was bored of writing horror stories and wanted to try writing a whimsical fantasy novel instead but he was very disappointed that his fans insisted that he continues writing more horror novels. We, the fans, were the Annie Wilkes who forced Stephen, Paul Sheldon, to continue writing stories against his will. :(

Since you will likely get at least 100 comments praising the work of Kathy Bates and ONLY Kathy Bates in this (and she IS TERRIFIC) I'll take this opportunity to sing the praises of her often-overlooked co-star, James Caan, without whom this film WOULDN"T be quite the modern classic it has become. He is brilliant in this. Up until this film, he portrayed more than his share of tough guys and some bad guys, and he was very athletic in real life, so to see him as a helpless victim, at the hands of a woman no less, is way out of character for him. And he NAILED it! You actually FEEL his injuries, you believe the pain his character is experiencing! James Caan recently passed away over the summer at the age of 82, but he was an outstanding actor with a terrific body of work dating back to the 60's. You should seek out more of his films. Though it may not be your particular cup of tea, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention THE GODFATHER, in which James Caan's portrayal of mobster Sonny Corleone is the stuff of legend. You did well with this reaction. MISERY is quite an unnerving film.

Also, kudos to you for rewatching that scene when you were so disturbed by it.

KSO , do you notice how the film was shot ? It was shot from below looking up at Annie . The director wanted the audience to be in Paul's place and feel his pain , fear etc . Also in the book , Annie doesn't break Paul's feet . She chops them off with an axe . And the sheriff , doesn't get killed by a shotgun to the back in the book. In the book , Annie runs him over with the snow machine . Although the director left that out because he said that the audience wouldn't be able to handle it .

If a movie scene ever gets to be too much. Take a break, remember they are actors and no one was hurt, and after they filmed the scene they all went out to lunch.

Kathy Bates is one of my favorite actors. I'd love to see you react to another of her performances, but maybe one where she is less homicidal, although I think you would LOVE Dolores Claiborne if you saw it. She was also sensational in Primary Colors, About Schmidt, and Fried Green Tomatoes.

Hobbling ankles is like piercing ears, it really hurts a lot worse when ya do them one at a time instead of both together. 😉 Sorry, I knew when I saw this reaction in the list, she’s going to have a little trouble with this one. You didn’t disappoint.

I liked this a lot in the '90s, but also still found it fine when I watched again some years ago.

If you’re interested in who Annie was before meeting Paul, Stephen King produced a television show that lasted two seasons on Hulu called Newcastle. Season one focused on Shawshank prison (from the Shawshank redemption) revealing that Shashank actually had a supernatural secret hidden away. And the second season featured a young Annie Wilkes, before the events regarding Paul Sheldon.

I watched the movie and read the book by the great master Stephen King. He's already commented that Misery is one of his best books ever written and I sign it down below for sure. A big hug from Brazil. 👋🏻😃👍🏻 🇧🇷

I love this film so much. Kathy Bates is such an amazing actress. But I’m just so glad her character didn’t find me after an accident! It’s such a great film.❤️Edit: I absolutely loved your reaction, I really appreciate how you analyse things, I love how involved you get with the stories. When I first saw it, I kept wondering, how did she have so many meds? That made me suspicious immediately. Lots of love to you hunni🙏

Great movie What always piss off about the movie is what happen to the sheriff (In the book it is even worse), He is such nice guy. but that is horror movies for you and that is why I almost never watch horror movies . As for books well I am more of a John Grishem or Lee Child book reader. But I do like Steven King adaptions like Shawshank Redemption ,The Green Mile., Stand By me . Actually I like The Running Man which also a Stephen King adaption tough it is much better than the book. Also I recommend The Dead Zone which had a great tv show as well as a movie.

Yeah! Great movie! R. I. P. James Caan. And Lauren Bacall. This is from a Stephen King book(The hobbling scene is more graphic in the book) and Kathy Bates was in another great SK movie called Delores Claiborne. With Jennifer Jason Leigh. It's more of a carachter study. Also a "Cross" is not a religious symbol. It's actually a torture device. Wearing a cross does not symbolize a religion but wearing a Crucifix does. Thanks!
