Couldn't agree more, they both have such distinct styles, its quite easy to pick out who was influencing which part more. Love this song

Misha Mansoor helped produce pretty much all of their records except for the newest one, and has influenced the songwriting somewhat as well- since I've studied his writing, I can hear it throughout the first album a great deal, and a little on Weightless. While he helped structure and record Joy Of Motion, I think Javier really found his voice with that record and so did Gartska.
@Tomahawks3606 жыл бұрын
Gartska only got involved on the songwritting in the Madness of Many, because when he arrived The Joy of Motion was, as far as I know, near to finish (On matters of songwritting).
@sacredxgeometry6 жыл бұрын
@@Tomahawks360 Fair. But I really really REALLY like the drumming on that record and it wouldn't be farfetched to still say it helped him find his voice as a drummer, it's so..effortless and elegant. Poignant like Marco Minneman, I'd say.
@nickknee35154 жыл бұрын
@@vodalavoid I definitely think that Tosin did the clean leads and Misha did the Meshuggah Djenty stuff but its hard to tell. If I didn't know it I'd think this was a new AAL song with Javier and Matt.

Music is, like so many things in life, misinterpreted. Music is never competition with another, unless voluntarily agreed upon. Music is a competition with the oneself. Each and every sentient being interprets their reality differently. Music is the strive to better oneself, not see who is better than someone else.

This song is actually so good that I tested in some very old earbuds that have nearly no bass, and this song even in 360p delivers a subtle yet suitable form of backing bass. Talk about Optimism, this is a hopeful overlook.
@taz28078 жыл бұрын
It was a smart move for them to just use a computer for drums. I mean just imagine choosing between the gods of prog metal drumming. Halpern and Garstka. Which coincidently are both named matt haha. Don't even think of splitting them like halpern for optimist and garstka for pessimist because it would just become one perfectly awesome drum battle other than become a song
@JamesWhitmarsh8 жыл бұрын
Halpern drummed for AAL for a bit didn't he?

They didn't use a real drummer because it costs money to record drums and it takes a fair amount of time to mic everything up and get the right sound. I bet they recorded this for 0 dollars since misha has such a good setup at home.

Listening to these two songs creates a good news/bad news situation. The good news, both of these artists' bands' (AAL, Periphery) upcoming albums will be truly amazing as they continue to improve and evolve their skills and song writing. The bad news: that the dream scenario of these two artists collaborating and creating a hybrid band to write a full length album, building off these two songs, will likely never happen. Optimist and Pessimist will just be a tease.

They're both excellent musicians and have a unique set of skills to their names. I don't see a musician as being "good" or "bad", I just acknowledge the level of experience and understanding that the person in question has acquired and give them an albeit arbitrary place in my mind for where they'd fit on a comparative scale, but I really encourage horizontal thinking where you can still acknowledge difference but the egotistical ideas like "better" and "worse" don't have much meaning or weight

Look up Tony MacAlpine. The late 80s and early 90s had a lot of this kind of thing around. The time signatures were generally more basic but the chords and progressions were based on baroque and other "classical" eras. There were jazzy elements depending on the player. I think once you stray from the basic approaches to any music that inevitably there begins echoes of jazz. Also the genre was called neo-classical. Shrapnel Records was putting a lot of it out. Tom Varney was, I believe, the owner and major proponent of the shredder movement. Not trying to be a know it all, I just sense that you give a shit and knowledge is power. That said Tosin is sick.
