Clarification: Poppy's Patina is the manufacturer who messed up by mislabeling a bottle of gloss as matte. They are the customer service I was referring to when I mention it in this video. They are also the ones who made it right by sending me another kit, for free. I have had no interaction with VGG, except when I bought the product through their website. If you watch to the end you'll see that I have no problem with VGG or Derek. He licensed his brand to a product, he's not responsible for the manufacturing processes. We're moving on and dragging the C10 across the finish line with us. Thanks for all the support!

I don’t think so. I tried it several times using different applicators and couldn’t get a smooth finish. Love VGG, but if you search for a few minutes, there’s lots of us who have had this experience. I think this is why Derek only sprays it on now. This is sad to see. I run a speed shop in GA, I bought a bottle of the VGG gloss and did the shop truck just a few months back. It required some touch ups where I accidentally hit already dried areas (have some white in the patina and hard to see what's been cleared), but it overall came out beautiful with no issues like this. Since then I've bought a dozen bottles of Poppy's and done over a half a dozen customer cars with no issues or complaints. Something is definitely wrong here, whether with the product or the prep. One thing I will say is I can only get a good finish using the pads as you are, and I do not press down hard. Best of luck.

Thanks Jacob. I know there are lots of guys out there who had great experiences with it. I tried to be gracious, I’m not gonna blame a manufacturer for my own challenges with laying it out evenly or causing runs. I just tried to share my experience and the challenges I had with the product. Like I said, the only problem I could attribute to the manufacturer, they fixed by sending me a new kit. I have no beef with Poppy’s Patina or VGG over any of this. Thanks for watching.

@@Xthreadgarage it seems very possible the replacement you received was defective, just trying to share my experience as a real person that isn't sponsored. I have a hard time trusting other reviews where I don't know their association with the product, just hope it gave some perspective.

I didn’t show it in the video, but the second application, on the roof, had to be sanded with a DA sander to get rid of the streaks in the clear coat. 600 grit wet sanding wasn’t cutting it. That’s part of the reason I think the catalyst was part of the problem. That coat was harder than woodpecker lips after it cured. Also part of the reason I didn’t want to try a 3rd time, or spray it. I just didn’t have confidence in the product or my ability to use it without requiring more work.
@critterIMHO
@critterIMHO 6 ай бұрын
While adding catalyst will definitely make the product more durable, it also adds a bit of gloss, which I personally think it’s quite nice. And I would think that it should be wiped on as thin as possible, and don’t worry about streaks. That’s what second and third coats are for.

@Xthreadgarage
@Xthreadgarage 3 ай бұрын
I would not use it on a true patina vehicle, I just think you’re asking for poor adhesion flaking and fading issues down the road. This truck was prepped new enamel automotive paint, and I wanted to clear coat it and sing the praises of a wipe on product, but that’s not how it went. I have another video on the channel detailing our use of Sweet Patina’s Patina sauce, a wipe on oil based product. We will use that on all our patina rides going forward. They are a channel sponsor now, so you can get 5% off with code CGS5 at checkout.

I am one of many on the other side of that experience. The fact that the first product they sent from Poppy’s Patina was mislabeled matte when it was a gloss leads me to question the consistency of their manufacturing process. A few years ago I tried the rustoleum roll on paint job on my 1988 Ford Ranger 4x4. I used a dense white foam roller from Home Depot. It air bubbled like crazy but all of the bubbles laid out .This might be "fix" that you could try on your test door. I hope that you didn't have to pay for the second kit because if you did that's just way wrong IMO. I have a 1967 Ford F-100 SWB that sat in some guys yard for 30 years so I have a natural patina. I made up a fake speed shop name and hand painted it on the doors like you did and when the time comes it's gonna get scuffed and some flat clear and I'm done.
@Xthreadgarage
@Xthreadgarage Жыл бұрын
We used a roller that came with the kit for the bedliner. It’s like a heavy duty scotchbrite material in a roller. We didn’t have to pay for the second kit. They sent that to us when they realized their mistake. Flat/matte clear is the best look on patina.

@Xthreadgarage Жыл бұрын
I said several times, the runs were my fault, and that if I had more experience with the product, maybe I could get it to layout without any runs or streaks. The only fault I mentioned that wasn’t mine was the mislabeling of the product, which I graciously mentioned they acknowledged and fixed. Additionally, I said lots of people have had success using this product, but I haven’t, for that reason, I’m not going to continue trying to figure it out on this project.

A lot has to do with what paint is underneath. Old fully cured dried out, worn out would be much better. Fully cured catalyzed (2k) paint still soft for days. Enamel paints stay flexible and may absorb the 2 part paint and cause the dry streaks.

Did the door twice. Did the truck once and the roof once more. They say you need twice as much material to spray it on. Not sure I have enough material left to cover it if I spray it on. Thanks for the shoutout Steve. I don't think the issue was user error on this, just a crappy product with a popular licensed brand name so it would sell, and a few people got lucky with it by accident. Kinda like Behr/Mahle (supplier for BMW) radiators and hoses now grenading in under a year after they outsourced everything to China. As a result, most BMW owners go for Nissens radiators and Rein/Continental hoses since they're made in Germany and actually fit correctly.

@tsherwoodrzero
@tsherwoodrzero Жыл бұрын
@@dalerose1694 When someone says "perfect" in this context, I instantly put their claim under the microscope to assess how it stands to scientific scrutiny. For example, most say BMW TIS and the Bentley Manuals are "perfect" for the E38 7-Series. However, scrutiny against documentation for a comparable car (Eunos Cosmo) put the spotlight on MASSIVE important sections being missing. One such area is the cooling system and procedures to service it properly including torque specifications for anything being removed for access. Based on that, I'd surmise that it was 4:57PM on a Friday, everyone just Yabba-Dabba-Doo'ed out the door and then called in "sick" for a month. So I wrote my own guide on the subject, while refreshing the cooling system on my own 740i and writing it in Plain English with methods where adult-sized people with adult-sized hands can perform the job rationally and reasonably with commonly available tools. It's the Japanese way. Paint and bodywork is out of my expertise, so I would defer to Steve's experience over my own on methods and technique for laying down paint/clearcoat properly. As for analyzing your results compared to traditional spray-on clearcoat, I'd call in Sreten from M539 Restorations in Germany because his eye for spotting paintwork flaws far exceeds my own. Several different matches for Dolphin Grey made by a professional body shop in Germany all failed to meet his standards. Only a shop in Poland measured up, and turned out absolutely gorgeous work.
