Because of misogyny, women and girls basically aren’t allowed to have wants, likes, or hobbies. I say scrap that. I’m an AFAB person, I like international music and art, I want to be an architect and study the stem classes to aid in that, and I do metalworking, working out, and traditionally “feminine” things for fun. Who cares? Just do it! (Yes, this is assuming you have the resources and support needed, I am aware of how lucky I am to be able to enjoy these things.) Edit: My career ideas have changed a bit and I am planning on going into environmental studies, rather than architecture, though I still wish to study it on the side, just not as my main career. Edit: I wrote this before I was able to express and explore my gender identity, and I now identify as Bigender using she/her and he/him pronouns--so I am tech not a woman, but still feel very comfortable in my femininity and within womanhood to some degree.

As a guy, I really really resonated with a lot of the things she said. But I'm not sure whether we can call ALL of that misogyny. I faced a lot of backlash being Indian, growing up in the UK. Eating Indian food was frowned upon by my white friends. The same goes with listening to Indian music or my love for anime and K-pop. I was ashamed for having my own likes and things I enjoy and always hid it and acted like I did the norm thing. I don't think you can define this as misogyny. It's expectations of society that is wrong because this could be expressed by any gender why does it always have to be stereotyped to men, while we too can experience such things?

This makes me think of the new _Helluva Boss_ episode. There's a scene where Crimson, Moxxie's dad, refers to Millie as a dame and a broad, both of which are slang words used against women. That being said, Crimson is sexist and revealed his misogynism. How do you think I'd react in the event of Crimson calling me a dame and a broad?
@icarus9093 Жыл бұрын
Umm, do you know what dame means? It's literally a female knight but better as they are not bound to military service. Treated with respect and nobility because of a rank. People have been knighted as dames like Maggie Smith and Emma Thompson. (More as well) Now before you say 'i didn't mean it in that context' you should find it hilarious that morons have been calling you a noble the entire time. Just saying. Also, never really heard dame as a way to tease women or against woman aside from some strangers on KZbin talking about how it was used against them. I'm a bit puzzled with this one???

Umm, in her opening statement she makes assumptions of how the audience may think? Making a judgement based on how someone looks, is a natural survival instinct. Just like a fight or flight, or friend or foe response. Most of these responses are based upon each individuals lived experience. We then use conformation bias to reinforce such beliefs, just like the lady in this video does to reinforce her belief in misogyny.

I think that when it comes kpop people definitely get fun of for it regardless of gender! But the thing is, it’s more apparent for girls to get made fun for liking “boy bands” in general than it is for guys to get made fun of.

It's a great example because misogyny is a two sides of the same coin. Men would get made fun of as well because the music isn't "masculine" or it would be considered "too feminine" for a man to like a boy band.

I do agree it can be blurry on some of the things she called misogyny, but it can be devaluing when others constantly say you are wrong for liking the things you like. Sure you can say "Well she should have just not cared about the mean people" but it's hard for children and teens when people devaluing you comes up over and over again especially when it's treated as normal.

@@Mira-gu6we I’m not attacking her, I’m making an observation. Those interests aren’t necessarily strictly feminine either and could be made fun of for many reasons. Anything can be roasted and made fun of really. How someone responds to that is on them. She’s trying to gaslight the audience that somehow finding humor in things is a misogynistic because she personally cannot stand people making fun of something that she likes. Not everyone responds to someone making fun of their interests like this. No one is stopping her from pursuing her interests.

She is young, so I'll forgive it, but giving so much time to kpop in a speech about misogyny is a bit ironic. The kpop industry IS misogynistic. The girls in those groups are expected to be pretty, thin, having surgery to "optimise their look", and being single. The kpop industry is a package deal, where the music counts 1/5.
