Hi, - it's an easy haircut to do... but alas- the schools now don't seem to be teaching this method... perhaps due to the fact perms are not as popular as they were--- this cut ensured that "rolling a perm" was easy to do... as it is not only guaranteed no fish hooks due to the evenness of the cut- but it also made the perm look great... people with naturally curly hair love this cut as well as it make the curls pretty... - I consider myself fortunate I learned this cut in the 70s when it was taught.... the layer cuts today seem to be very uneven... random strands just chopped off... sporadic cutting- nothing precise.... if the cut is done correctly- the stylist will do the entire cut in front of your eyes while over directing to prevent losing length... I did a second video of this cut to explain to the hairdressers how to do it... watch it- and feel free to show it to the person cutting your hair. Good Luck... and thanks for the compliment! :-D

I even went to the Paul Mitchel school for this haircut and the instructor pulled up a picture. Still didn't get the haircut right. They don't understand. I told one stylist that I wanted the Farrah hair. She told me, "Which one? I looked her up and she had a lot of styles." NO, only one was the Farrah look. What are they learning in school if they can't even copy a picture? I'll do it myself.

I don't think a lot of young women know what a feathered haircut is. So if you just tell them that you want your hair to be layered and then tell them how short you want your hair, they'll understand.

Tho I agree it is not the best video to highlight "How to do this haircut"- I had the camera on the station and was not able to have someone hold the camera to show the angles etc... also- I did use rollers... and for the record- I'm in California and have worked for ABC Studios as an on set stylist- credits include- General Hospital, Barney Miller, Fridays, Family Feud, Devo, Oingo Boingo, Plasmatics, & TV Guide... to name just a few - USA Cuts is nothing like a Super Cuts- I'm self employed.

Thanks for this. The younger hairdressers need to learn how to do this. After many years I finally found a lady my age who can cut a long layered shag. Even when I showed photos of myself with this cut,they just couldn't get it right. Stevie Nicks and Morgan Fairchild also had the long shag. After appx 17 years I finally found a hairdresser around my age who knew what to do. I have got so many compliments. ( My hair texture is more like that of Stevie Nicks)You look fabulous also.

Oh Ladies, I do understand! Ive been rockin this style since I was 12. Im now 55. You are right about having a hard time finding a hairdresser that knows this cut. Im very blessed to have her! I dont like switching my hairdressers. I can count how many Ive had. Ive been with my current one since 2005. You wouldnt believe how much Ive brought to her. Strangers come up to me wanting to know who does my hair. Ive had men ask me for their wives. Nobody is wearing this anymore. That is funny you mention you were taught to give a precision haircut, but they don’t teach that anymore. My husband cuts my hair, my mom’s, and a couple of my friends hair as well. He learned from a female friend many years ago that would cut his, so she wanted him to cut hers for her as well so she showed him how. A friend of mine stopped by when hubby was trimming my locks and as she watched, she commented that is the way her mother used to cut her hair for her and nobody does it like that anymore. So she asked him to give her a haircut as well. She was very happy with the results and asked him if he could continue to cut her hair for her as the salon stylists always hacked it and it was nice to get a good haircut that lays nice.

This is a timeless cut- so- despite it being 2013 - a lot of people want this haircut for the same reason they want the short pixie cut ... it's easy to maintain and always looks good even if they don't have time to style it... they can just let it dry naturally. Layered cuts will always be requested due to the simplicity of the styling- also- the long shag allows you to maintain the length without the weight- plus- it looks like you have even more hair when in reality you have less #layeredcuts

I have had the same problem in the past getting this cut because it seems to be a forgotten cut or they don't understand how to do this cut because it's from the 70s & 80s! I learned & did this cut in the late 70's many times. It's a great style and definitely a classic. Very few, if any, young stylists know how to do this cut correctly. I went in search for a Farrah Fawcett cut to show my hubby & you are the only one that cuts it like I did. Hi, & thanks for asking- - yes... the entire haircut is over directed... starting on the top- when you get to the crown section 1/4-1/2 inch sections while working your way down to the nape of the head... then do your sides the same way- start at the top- doing the same 1/4- 1/2 sections you did in the back... hope that helps ya...

I have been cutting my own hair like this since the 70's. For a faster version, just gather hair in a pony tail and cut with pony tail pointing straight up. Always wear my hair up, just waiting for the shag to come back in style lol.

I can do a Kitchen Fawcett cut in my sleep. Always meant to be a simple cut. A nice variation is to frame the face with your guide and use the tip of the nose as your cutting point.

Hi, thanks for the question :-D- I over directed to the center top- the center is my guideline- so each 1/4 inch section I take I bring it to that point & then over direct by 1/4 inch... so when you comb it backwards you can see the lines are in unison... and when you roll the hair...regardless of the direction- there are no gaps. - EG: if you choose not to roll it backwards for the classic feather look- you can roll it down for a classic wave look with no interruption. :-D

I tried this on my thick curly hair but half my hair is feathered perfectly looking amazing, the other is not feathered at all even though both sides I used the guidelines. As I am doing it myself I assume the angle when I bring it to the front (not top like you) (overdirect) I didn't do it the same but i cant remember how I did the feathered side vs the non feathered to correct it, any tips? half my head looks lush just want the other one to feather too . thank you.

I've had this haircut all my life. People always gave me a mullet by cutting the second middle layer too short. Another girl did OK but she cut the top like you did but then she cut the bottom by I think dge did angle the bottom up to top for the bottom length. Then she went around my head right to left cutting between the top and bottom to be even. I may have lost you lol. Thank for showing me the correct way to fo it. I've been cutting my own for 30 years!

I'm sending this video to my hair dresser. She's so young, she doesn't even know who Farrah Fawcett is. I told a friend of mine I had asked my hair dresser for a Farrah Fawcett haircut and she started laughing.....said I sure know how to date myself, huh? Now, I just feel old....sigh

After seeing your comment explaining yourself… honestly to make thin hair like that to have so much volume as an end result, nothing really needs to be said. We need more stylist who can handle our hair types!
