I have a female Eclectus "Ruby" and she is 18 this year. She never talks with me in the room, but she is cooing listening to this birdie girl. We go to nursing homes with Ruby, and she coos around folks who can't talk or who have dementia.

Would love to have an Eclectus. I have two Amazon's. Yellow crowned and Double yellow headed. Both boys and huge age difference. The younger yellow headed had a great personality and vocabulary then I got a wild caugh Double. Thought it would be a good match and it hasn't worked out. I love him but he is a bully and bonded to his bud.

I have had and babysat multiple eclectus females, never once got a moody or unpleasant bird. The females are lovely, and get a lot of bad press. I've had eclectus males be extremely aggressive and nippy, much more so than the girls. Your birdy is a lovely girl.

I have owned 3 eclectus parrots. My 1st two parrots were brother and sister. I still have the male, unfortunately his sister passed away. But Occy is manageable. Stephy never was, even though she was hand reared. Unfortunately I don't know to what extent she was hand reared. And now there is Molly. She was hand reared, then neglected by her previous owners. She was and is not a bird to be handled. I guess it depends on the owners and parrots themselves on how tame they can be. I rescued a baby galah and spoon fed her. She is tamer than my eccies. Spent long periods of time with her.

My two year old Solomon Island eclectus, Christopher ColumBIRD, *loves* Echo! I have several hours of eclectus youtube videos saved, so he can watch them while I am at work or doing chores at home. I have to say, he has a tremendous crush on Echo. Whenever this video comes on-- even if it's the third time that day-- he stops whatever he is doing, and runs as close to the tv screen as possible, and watches intently to the very end. It's very handy when I have to be on a conference call!

It's important to read your parrots body language, there are certain times when Echo will get nesty and we have a snuggle free period. During these times you can still have a strong and loving relationship by providing games and foraging opportunities outside of the cage. We work on flight exercises and play peek a boo.

Henry Wilson i just got mine. she's 6 years old and her previous owners didn't handle her enough which made her kinda mean. she bites or tries to bite and growls when i walk by. i've tried talking to her for weeks and tried petting her with padded gloves because i've already had to get stitches from her sharp beak. would you know how i could fix this?
@halcyon10308 жыл бұрын
I am glad you asked. I've done this. I accept the bite a few times and acted surprised and upset but kept on demanding compliance. The step up on a stick or later a curled hand is fundamental to being able to get out of their cage. I also believe in starving a bit so that food becomes more of a focal point. DO you have a parrot stand that can be a destination for your bird away from its cage. They get cabin fever and need an outlet. Often away from the home they feel less inclined to assert their territorial dominance. if all else thry this. Get someone else to be the bad guy. I had friends leave me their bird for at least three weeks. The other parrots show the new guy how easy life can be when we all cooperate and step up and get time on the perch. treats for the happy playful birds and ignore the ill mannered. Like children they are jealous and want to be spolied. I also clip wings to assure that they cannot fly away. at some point the bird capitulates and goes along. I have not failed often but there are some birds that seem autistic and dispondent. Look for the eye contact and try eating your meal in front of them and offer a small portion of your food to it. that eye contact and engaging conversation goes a long way . They are surprisingly keen to you and will usually choose the path of self interest. My friend cares to feed me and thats a good thing . Otherwise as the bad guy I cover them with a towel and hold them while my assistant trims wings and files the nails and beak with a finger nail file. put them on their stand and have it clear it s okay for them to be there. Offer them food in the food cups on the stand. Cheese slices and mac and cheese and peanut butter on crakers are like cocaine to them and they tend to take the bait eventually. I do accept the bites and eventually trade a thump or two but remain resolved to not giving in and being bullied by the pet. Its their nature to establish dominance . Can you imagine a child who was never told no and was sure whatever when was okay and nobody could tell him different. They will forgive you if you establish that you mean them well and are good for more than just fussing. They fight and make up all day long in a breeding colony. Best wishes and please stay in touch.

The more generations are born and raised in captivity, the more selective breeding has a chance to breed some of the skittishness out of them.

My SI female is like that. My understanding is that the females in particular spend s lot of their lives in the wild, in their nests, being brought food by males. My female is very much a "watch the world go by" kind of bird, and she is very laid back. I have an IRN male and he is the polar opposite in terms of behavior. He is into everything and everybody.

Spend every spare second you can with them. Make sure you feed them correctly. Fresh fruit and veggies. Mine eat nuts as well. They love pomegranate and chilli's. Beans, bottlebrush flowers. Never feed them avocado. My pteradactyls are spoilt rotten. I grow a large percentage of fruit and veg organically for the monster.
