@@darkenergy5686 We charge at home, too. I love it. We have a 24 Model 3 Performance and 24 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited. They're both good on long road trips. Dog mode in the M3P is terrific for our Newfoundland dog, Lucy, who insists on riding along on errands. She prefers the Ioniq 5, though, because she has more room in the back seat and the windows go diem farther. To maintain A/C in the Ioniq, we have to turn off the car then use the phone app to turn on the climate control. It works, but it's not as convenient as dog mode. Oh well, first world problems. 😂

At a gas station you HAVE to stand out in the weather to hold a nozzle refueling. An electric charging station can be fully enclosed separating you and the vehicle from the weather. Add in value added service in the building while you charge makes charging even more of a win. Now there's the possibility of having wireless charging where you don't even have to physically plug in. I don't understand why anyone champions gasoline these days. Go Electric!

I worked for an industrial division of a Japanese auto OEM for 23 years. The Japanese auto makers and their thousands of of suppliers are led by the JAMA (Japan Auto Manufacture Association). This organization is lead by Toyota. This leadership has proven very helpful over the decades as these auto makers dominated global auto and light truck sales. However, since Toyota has actively resisted the transition to BEVs, their leadership has greatly hindered all BEV development across all Japanese auto makers. I would not count the Japanese OEMs out completely. Due to their ability to focus whole industries on singular goals, I expect that they will pivot to BEV technology and quietly develop the component design and manufacturing capability in Japan and share their knowledge with each Japanese OEM to surprise the world with competitive BEVs in the next few years. Japan does not have the anti-trust laws like the West so they will work together to recover their place in the global market position. They will have their biggest business challenge since the post war era. Their whole economy depends on succeeding.

Just a few problems with in-road charging. To charge up a meaningful amount, you'd have to be over the road for an extended period of time. The huge problem is the amount of conducting wire needed. Maybe they could use aluminum but you still need a LOT. Next, you need inverters to run the high frequency AC. Running them continuously would be a waste of power, Maybe they could break it up into panels that turn on when a car passed overhead. How much would that all cost? Boggles the mind. Multiply by the mileage of roads in the country. Putting a small induction pad at a number of parking spots looks a lot cheaper and will catch on, as long as there's a standard configuration.

Thank you for the vid! The point with wireless charging, beyond what you mentioned, is your basic parking lot. With V2G a parking lot with 100 cars hooked in is a 7,500/kwh grid battery. A car dealership? Their EV inventory when hooked in will earn utility credits from the large battery created. This tech will help the utilities immeasurably as all of a sudden there will be tens of thousands of "parking lot batteries" as the BEV fleet grows. Wireless helps accelerate the transition.

Physics enters: 1) Wireless Charging will always be less efficient than a direct connection 2) Not mentioned is the required accuracy of centering to the charging coil on the ground. It is critical: even a 5" matching error can reduce the coupling (transfer / charging efficiency) by 50%! 3) Cost: There is a lot of copper wire in both coils of the "air transformer", obvious even with only the bottom floor unit is shown. Also not shown or discussed are the required electronic control boxes on both coils. 4) Weight: A coil and electronic controls with a rugged, non-metallic, weatherproof housing will weigh ~ 70 lbs on the car side. 5) Ground clearance about that of a small grapefruit (~5") will guaranty destruction of the car mounted coil in weeks. 6) The suggested use cases are totally unrealistic, considering the accuracy and spacing required to achieve even 1/4 the claimed coupling efficiency. Everybody who has investigated this concept has abandoned it, including BYD and Tesla, for example, because of the low efficiency, limitations and impracticality. The best cases which were developed were a flat cart or arm which would target, locate and position the coil concentric to the car's coil, and then raise it for close coupling. All quickly realized that if this was done, it was way better and more efficient to just replace the wireless coils with contacts. Several car companies have even developed, and shown, a robotic arm plug in the charging cable to a car's charging port (also deemed impractical and expensive). Several electric city busses use semi-automated connections for charging, but since they have absolute control of where and how, it's feasible and effective. ORNL is a propitious place where propeller heads spend years burning government money for little results. A.K.A. "Your Tax Dollars at Work"

Tesla has not abandoned wireless charging. Implementation is forthcoming and will be crucial for robotaxi operations. They have already hinted at implementation with the upcoming Model S. @@MissGoElectric When you post a photo of one in your home and a 2 paragraph performance review, I'll consider listening. The BS from rumor mongers like Electrek and Teslarati aren't credible. All "wishing and hoping" and "tea leaf reading" innuendo. Overnight trickle charging... maybe; but anything remotely implied and stated here is all fantasy. The fact that you mention a "5% efficiency reduction" is a demonstration of wishful thinking and ignorance. That figure is the theoretical, lab perfect, alignment of the prototype experimental devices tested. I have designed and built "wireless" power systems and chargers and can tell you that unless there is a precision placing mechanism / alignment template and almost contact (i.e. 66% losses. The positioning of the two inductors (and associated iron / ferrite "focusing" pole pieces) produces a highly logarithmic transfer function. I hope you know that all the wireless phone and watch chargers in use are less than 50% efficient (i.e. power in vs power delivered to the battery) and they are quite finicky about the co-location of the device and distance from it, regardless of the theoretical BS marketing claims. And these are typically delivering between 2 and 7 watts of power, not hundreds of kilowatts! Tesla has also announced, demonstrated, with great fanfare and live coverage, an automatic battery swapping station. Everybody got really excited, to the point of forming companies to make chains of "Battery Swap Stations" all over. Where are they now??? As for the "readily available" automated solutions you mention, are you implying that the hundreds and hundreds of robotic welding and assembly arms Tesla decommissioned by using a GigaCastings instead are coming to a carport near you??? A much simpler, useful and practical solution is to put a connector in the nose of a car, and drive it to mate with spring loaded connector on a wall or bracket. Nobody is abandoning ICE vehicles because they have to open the lid, insert a hose to the gas inlet, and squeeze the lever. Lunacy!

Wireless charging for handicap only, just give me more plugs
@MissGoElectric
@MissGoElectric Ай бұрын
Wireless is additional, not in lieu of. Context: Copper cables and connectors are frequently stolen, vandalized, or inadvertantly damaged. DC fast charging cable thermal management is a common cause of non-functional public today. Individuals with disabilities and areas parking spaces will benefit from a cable free process. Autonomous vehicles will be able to park and charge without human intervention. This is huge for rental fleets, delivery services, and robotaxi services of course. It will enable uninterrupted operation with minimal human labor required. Able bodied EV owners will be able to have their self driving vehicles drop them at the airport then return home alone, then charging in order to have enough range to pick them later on. Wireless charging will unlock many unforeseen opportunities. -Producer Tim

Why does this new platform Audi e-Tron only provide 9.6kW AC charging like MB EQS? Does BMW and other German EVs provide same? That’s 20% slower than most EVs at 11.5 kW. Disappointing for new technology.

I am likely older than you. Your comment is incorrect both about us older folks and also about polyphase. In the case in question it really is three phase specifically. Not many US houses have 3 phase power. Converting the single phase input from the mains to three phase for charging requires some truly thumping great capacitors to store energy as the power taken from the mains follows a: Y = K * (1 + sin(120Hz)) function. Obviously if you don't want the power company to get angry with you, you need to power factor correct the load your charger puts on the mains.

Another great show, of course. Really too bad that EVs are, you know, DEAD, and all! 😉🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. One of the great maxims is: FOLLOW THE MONEY, and I might add, FOLLOW THE EV INNOVATION. Even if you did a show every single DAY (like The Electric Viking), it would still be hard to keep-up. The Japanese companies are so far behind that their survival may be in-doubt; I wish them well, but . . . We’ll see. A lot of deep debt there, and the Bosses are still in-love with ICE. 😖 |||||| 👊👍👍❤️

We are advocates of excellent EV technology. Miss GoElectric drives a Rivian, not a Tesla. Your bias AGAINST Tesla has already yielded a great deal of misinformation. Our allegiance is to truth, not to a particular brand. Our information is current. Certain HW versions of Tesla vehicles had phantom braking for a time, but that was resolved via software last year to the extent that Tesla is no more likely to phantom brake than other ADAS systems. If you think the fit and finish of the new Tesla Model 3 is poor, then you surely have not seen one in person. Today's leading EV manufacturers are not standing still. They are progressing on all fronts and old information is quickly obsolete. Freedom is a luxury. Extended range is freedom. Stopping and paying for a charge is not luxurious. Any EV driver would rather have MORE range than LESS range. Are you aware that the EPA revised methodology for range estimates and Tesla adheres to the new standards? Owners of today's Tesla EVs return range which is as close to advertised range as competitors. -Producer Tim
