When you have to pay a 100% tariff to buy a car you want, that's not "freedom". It's corporate welfare that YOU are paying for. GM, Ford, Stellantis: Do what Xpeng is doing, make us inexpensive good cars, or get out of the car business and start making toasters, or strollers, or bicycles. We need AFFORDABLE cars again.

I think EVs will be cheaper to produce than tailpipe cars just on parts reduction alone. The reason why we see numbers like the battery pack is 40% of the cost is that the rest of the car is not expensive to make. As battery cost comes down and large castings are used more EVs will be profitable. However, I think gas cars will be popular for a time as a "display of wealth". Meaning it shows you can afford one and afford the fuel and maintenance.

I very much doubt the range figure. Comparing the car to a Bolt EV, which I owned for a short time, it is slightly heavier and has a 4 kWh smaller battery so while it likely has lower aerodynamic drag than the Bolt I doubt the range could be too much greater than the Bolt's 259 miles (419 km) on the EPA scale. No matter though even if the range is 260 miles at that price it still is a phenomenal value. Alas with tariffs of 100% on Chinese EVs here in the US (and now in Canada) and no Federal subsidy they won't be selling here any time soon.

Not so sure, a government subsidized export of a car may as well be an economic nuclear bomb shot at Detroit. Once your competitors are destroyed end the subsidy and now you have monopoly prices. The good is American consumers get cheap cars temporarily at just costs industrial stability. Tariffs are the shock absorbers. Low tariffs are normal to protect domestic industry but high tariffs would make American manufacturing inefficient and uncompetitive.

Tesla was losing money in every car they sold for 10 years or so, until they started their mega factory in China. The other US EV brands are all still struggling. Xpeng will need volume to start making money in their cars, but they're set up to reach that point if they can beat the fierce competition in the Chinese market. Only the fittest will survive, and the market will decide. This is not new phenomenon because the phone maket (or all other consumer products like tv, Aircon etc) in China was the same. There were so many local brands washed to around 10 or so, who have the finance, the r&d, the manufacturing and the sales network to out compete their rivals. The Chinese market is big enough and the supply chain is huge and complete, so remainders are world class. This is perfect market economy, and it's a joke to say Chinese government can be so smart to run all these companies from behind. They just copied the policies from US and let the market run its way.
