The second edition of Missing Championships focuses on Juan Pablo Montoya's 2015 IndyCar season. This video really puts in perspective at how important every championship point is, especially with only a 16 race calendar on the IndyCar schedule. It would come down to the final lap of the final race to determine who the 2015 IndyCar Champion would be.
Linked below are full videos of races during the 2015 IndyCar season.

"Dominated that whole season"? Did you not watch the video? JPM's season was spotty with flourishes of performance; at best he dominated some events, and even that's a stretch. He had two wins and a total of 5 podiums in the entire season, with four of his podiums in the first six events of the year (up to the Indy 500). Those were followed by a stretch of 8 events without a podium until Pocono, at the penultimate round.

I loved this video. I really hope you could make a series out of it, maybe looking into other motorsports as well. As for other suggestions: IndyCar: -Will Power (2012): Power lead Ryan Hunter-Reay by 36 points with 2 rounds to go and still managed to lose it, due to a crash in the final race at Fontana. -Hélio Castroneves (2003): He had a 25 point lead with 3 rounds to go and 42 points ahead of actual Champion Scott Dixon, before eventually dropping behind both in the title race due to a pretty bad final stretch NASCAR: -Denny Hamlin (2010) Was the regular season champion that year and seemed to finally end Jimmie Johnson's dominance after leading by 30+ points with 2 to go. Well, he didn't score another Top-10 after that, meaning Johnson won title nr. 5 -Kevin Harvick (2020): He won 9 races that year (4 more than actual champion Elliott) and lead the title race after the Round of 8, before finishing second in the first race of the round of 8. Then he completely collapsed, not finishing in the top-15 in the other two races, losing him the title. Formula 1: Lewis Hamilton (2007) In his rookie season, he lead the title race by 12 points from team mate Fernando Alonso, with 2 races to go (which was more than a race win), before only scoring two points in the final two races, losing the title to Kimi Räikkönen by one point (who won the final two races) Fernando Alonso (2010) Alonso lead the championship until the final round in Abu Dhabi, 15 points ahead of eventual winner Sebastian Vettel and 8 ahead of nearest title rival Mark Webber. A bad strategy call and him not managing to pass Vitaly Petrov lead him to losing the title by 4 points. WRC: Colin McRae (2001): Had a championship lead of 1 point over Tommi Mäkinen and 2 over Richard Burns ahead of the final rallye of the season. Mäkinen retired on the first day and McRae was in a secure spot to win the title as Burns did not have a lot of pace. Made a mistake by himself and threw the title away. Carlos Sainz (1998): Was 1 point behind Tommi Mäkinen ahead of the final rallye of the season. However, Mäkinen retired after an accident on day 1, leading Sainz needing to just cruise home. He was in fourth place when he suffered an engine failure 500m from the end of the rallye/championship. DTM: Liam Lawson (2021) Had a pretty solid lead over title contenders Kelvin van der Linde and an even bigger one over Maximilian Götz ahead of the final two races at the Norisring. In the first one he started from Pole, but KVL pushed him out of the way, leading to Götz winning race 1. Lawson still increased his Championship lead, but in race 2 KVL rammed into Lawson, taking the Kiwi out of the race. KVL later retired and Götz was in P3. Like that, Lawson would've won the title, but Mercedes gave the two leaders a team order, meaning Götz was let through and won the title Mattias Ekström (2017) Despite only winning one race the whole season, Ekström had a pretty big lead in the championship ahead of the final round at Hockenheim. Eventual champion René Rast (who was in his first full season) was 13 points behind him. However Ekström would only score 4 points in the final two races, meaning he lost the championship.

I raced go karts while growing up and I lived in Florida and raced in Miami or homestead and JMP would often come to watch as his dad was responsible for the racing series we were in (easy kart). I had a helmet which was JMP helmet design at the time 2003 but instead of Colombian colors I had German flag colors. He walked by one time and saw me wearing it , he said “ I like that.👍🏼” and walked away. Very happy he approved and super happy to have met and raced infront of him

Thank you! The writers lament, "Its is easier to write than edit....". The first memories I have of Juan's quickness I believe was at Mid-Ohio or Road America. If you blinked you wouldn't have seen it - the commentators were freaking and must have replayed it a half-dozed times - "How did he do that?" I think he may have been a keen student of Ayrton Senna. Good Luck, I really like your narration as much as your content.

There are aspects of this Indycar season that resonate strongly with the 2007 Formula 1 season, (and I'm not including the off-track scandals that happened in F1 that year). If memory serves me right, Lewis Hamilton was about 25-30 points clear of Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari by the mid point at the US GP, but by the penultimate round in China, he was just 6-7 points ahead, only to lose it at the final race in Brazil. He made up for it in 2008, but I still believe that '07 should've been Hamilton's year, which would have been spectacular as that was his rookie season.

Crazy to see how young Newgarden was winning Toronto in 2015. JPM was an awesome driver for sure talented in any car period. I never can understand why TMS never has a better crowd because all the races there seem to be thrillers. I love these old videos Demise90 thanks for posting. I feel like they need more ovals like Milwaukee and Fontana back on the calendar or Phoenix. I am a little biased because I am out west in Portland which I am grateful we are on the calendar at all but would like to see 1 or 2 more ovals on the schedule. Went to Iowa this year and had a blast.

If I did the math right. If both races weren’t double points Montoya and Dixon would’ve tied on points. Maybe I forgot to include the quali points Dixon got. Someone please let me know
@Demise90Racing
@Demise90Racing Жыл бұрын
I believe Dixon still would have won. I guess I was referring more to just the Indy 500 being double points and not randomly the last race of the year. They took the last race double points away a few years ago, and the 500 double points away this year. So we are back to just a straight forward Championship battle, that really isn't a battle because Alex Palou is killing everyone this year lol.

JPM lost a lot of points thru no fault of his own in 2015. Like the rainout in NO he was leading that race and ended up like 6th? And a $2 part breaks. (which almost never happens with Penske) at Iowa costing him huge points and would've been able to cruise around Sonoma in 10th and still win the title. Instead he had to battle for the title and made that dumb mistake trying to squeeze by Power.

Peak Indy Car design was late 90’s in the champ car series. This video reminds us how ugly these cars got. Better today but they need to fix the aero pods in front of the rear wheels and make the aero screen look better. It’s too big. Perhaps adopt the look of the halo from F1.

As a Scott Dixon fan, I absolutely lost it when he stole the title that year. The people around me didn’t understand why, but I didn’t care. I witnessed a most improbable outcome in that race for the championship. Needless to say, I was a happy camper that day.

Im a big Dixon fan, so I clearly loved the Sonoma finale that year It was only made sweeter by that the fact that the broadcasting from south america (Im from Argentina) was clearly unprofessional and one sided towards Montoya, trying to make him like a living god while trash talking the rest of the field. We were able to see how Penske threw away the championship between both of his drivers while CGR played the ultimate team effort with kanaan and kimball helping Dixon when needeed. 8 years after that day, I do feel a bit sad that Montoya never got a chance for redemption, only winning one more race before leaving penske (yeah he won the IMSA championship and a class victory as a pro-am in Le mans but nowhere near the same)

You could describe Montoya as "Fast, but Inconsistent". This has plagued him his entire career. Across CART, F1, Indycar, and IMSA, he will show up, light the place on fire, score some wins, and then leaves. He lost the championship in 2015 because he was simply not as consistent as Scott Dixon. He had too many poor races and Scott had fewer poor races, and had three wins to JPM's two. In F1 he showed up for five and a half seasons, won seven races, and left after poor results and frustration. In Indycar, he showed up for three seasons, won four races including the Indy 500, and then left after poor results. In IMSA he showed up for three seasons, won the championship, and then left after Penske left. His dalliances in sports car racing since then have garnered a few podiums but the trajectory and trend data is the same. For whatever series of reasons, he was never fully able to dominate a season except for the magical year in 1999 when he set CART on fire and in 2019 when he and Dane Cameron got the job done in IMSA. I will always love this guy but I just wish he was able to be race more consistently. He did a lot of crashing, and I saw it in person (Indy 2016, Mid-Ohio 2020, really the whole IMSA season in 2020).
