I have some experience with Search and Rescue. My one and only time. Sadly all we found was a Meatless Human Backbone and some torn clothes. We were asked to help searching a missing Hiker in the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia. It was suspected that the guy got lost off the trial and could have fallen somewhere due to tricky terrain. Man ended up meeting a bear at some point and became his first meal since the end of Winter. This happened in spring around early April. What is horrible is that the man was only lost for 3 days, meaning the bear met him very early on to leave only his spine of him. Members of the search party found his Rucksack and some personal items about 300m from the bones confirming his identity. People dont realize that the Woods are just as dangerous as they were 500 years ago.

Yeah, Lars, I was totally surprised by how much a skeeter (mozzie, mosquito, etc.) head net helped my sanity. The difference between with and without was dramatic. I have two types. One I wear with a boonie hat and the other has a ring that keeps the net away from the head in a manner similar to the boonie hat. With a quality net, the heat from body and breath escapes easily.

@@SurvivalRussia I might guess Lars, the way you've documented this search of yours, might actually be a comfort to the relatives of the woman, maybe offer some closure about her passing, that she must have had some serious commitment to being where she was, that something that extensive, doesn't usually happen without purpose and intent. If she was not just helplessly deranged or confused before starting or seriously injured, she might have been seriously intent on the apparent outcome. What on earth was she doing out there? In the woods, life is apparently quite serious.

Prayers and blessings to the missing woman, relatives and loved ones and all the people searching. It makes me very sad, one of my biggest fears is finding a dead person or dead runaway dog or cat in the woods. (It is not uncommon here to see posters of missing dogs and cats or walk into searchparties of missing people). Even dead small animals I find makes me sad.:(

The plant is called Riesen-Bärenklau in german, in english Giant Hogweed, and it is truly not to be underestimated. If it comes into contact with the skin and sunlight reaches the affected area, it can cause burn-like blisters. Even after healing, the skin often remains sensitive to the sun. It can also pose a danger to dogs and other animals. However, goats can eat it without any problems.😂

Lars get yourself an XR 400 mate. I’ve owned mine for 27yrs and it still kicks arse and is more reliable than a wood burning stove. I’ve raced it, worked it as a guide bike and done search missions here in Wales for decades, it’s never let me down. Apart from general servicing I’ve only had to change a couple of camchains which take a couple of hours to do. Cheap too as I use ZXR400 camchains and cut them to length.😊

Yeah, Lars you definitely ended that search at the right point. By one's self, with clear evidence of freshly made bear prints and no real way to defend yourself, you would just be putting yourself in danger of encountering ole griz (all bears are grizzlies when you are by yourself in the woods). Seriously, bears, whether black or brown can be very dangerous to a single person in the woods. Even when heavily armed and armoured the danger is still high. Bears are slow and make a lot of noise, except that when they want to, they can be very quiet and very fast. You have to be on your guard with your head on a swivel to keep alert at all times. I keep a Springfield Armory XDM 4.5 10mm with 5.28" threaded barrel on me and a 458socom AR with a blast can (my theory is that it maximizes the sound heard by the bear and is more likely to scare it off, if I miss). And of course, the ubiquitous very large can of pepper spray is also at hand. Each has a purpose and each requires training to be used to its best effectiveness.

It is quite astonishing to see it on video and not only on online maps! The clearing is huge! I wonder why it haven't grown over already. It is known that vegetation runs slower in the North but it is not so far north... It almost looks like someone still tills the field, or harvests hay at least. BTW. I am very curious about the small anti-bear tool you mentioned you carried in the chest pouch. I know only long tools are allowed in Russia to be kept at home and carried around. You've shown us a folding one before, but it is still too big. I can't imagine what it could have been...

As a 12-year member of our local SAR team, I know how daunting it can be trying to find the proverbial needle in a haystack. It's always most important to consider your own safety, especially when you probably are not searching for a living person at that point. Also, we never operate individually. Teams of two or more are far better both for safety and for more thorough coverage of the search area. Thanks for your willingness to get involved and help out!

Still curious what remote punching tool you had carried in your chest pouch... AFAIK in Russia only long tools are allowed for forest crafts - or "rubber ducks". Probably you could show it, as you had shown before your other tools, one named after a quadruped and another two (your and your wife's) named after the guy who invented them. Or is it a super-secret thingy for the chosen ones from three-letter-whatnot communities? Just kidding. I am worried that what you'd carried might eventually scare the brown one in a pinch but won't do much more...

Very difficult search in that area. It's the proverbial looking forward needle in a haystack. Without really good information to narrow down the search area it becomes almost impossible.

At least we now know that she have not been on that old village road. I would have seen her foot prints for sure.

That bad plant is called Giant Hogweed or Cow Parsley in English. It’s toxic and leaves a nasty rash.

It is very intresting for me that the authorities rely on people like you to help them search. I bet you are by far more qualified than the other search parties but in my country the authorities would look for themselves without relyng on civilians. I guess it must be part of the comunity living from rural russia maby?

The insects would have driven her crazy and then carried her remains away, after the bears had their supper. Ending the search was an obvious conclusion, at that time. The distance of 10 km would ring most communities where suiciders end up next season. We all return to dust.
