Hi Duncan, so happy that you are safe in Denmark. I hope that you get your car issues sorted out. The stress must seem to be quite alarming. So many things to consider when moving to a foreign country. I cannot even begin to imagine the Language barrier issues you are facing. I hope everything will be great in time. Those EV issues you are facing I hope they will soon be a matter for the past and that a solution will come that you find equitable. You seem to have a pretty good grasp of things and anything you have taken on in the past have always had you come out shining and on top. Resourcefulness is your strength, keep that in mind when things bog you down. You find solutions, that's what you do. I have faith in you for that Sir...

Totally stressful situation but sounds like its slowly coming together. Take time smell the roses as well as it will help your peace of mind. Maybe you need to look for a 2nd hand Ioniq as I'm sure they have them in Denmark. I still re-watch some of your older videos on various things as I'm still learning stuff on my Ioniq and do love it. I would like it to tow but think I can survive for the 5yr lease without that as I hardly used it on my old car, maybe twice I used it over 10yrs. Loving hearing about your experiences in Denmark so far and I'm sure everything will settle down just crazy at the moment, in a year from now you can look back on this time as a learning experience. :)

6:43 -- Not sure about Zoe but the e-Golf can be configured to draw less current if need be. It must be possible to find out if this is possible, or if the wiring can handle 13 amps and just charge the thing at home, as usual.

Zoe specs from myrenaultzoe.com/index.php/zoe-description/charging/: Domestic socket, 1 PHASE: 10 amps, 230V, 2.3kW, 9.5 hours. Surely the Danish wiring can handle 10 amps?

Thanks for the update, Duncan. I suspect the new 52kWh Zoe will resolve some of the issues you raise. It’ll have Apple CarPlay, B mode so you can increase regen in town, DC rapid charging. Zoe will charge at 8A, but efficiency losses will be poor. Worth having a look at the latest FC video and the one Craig from RZOC posted for more info.

At 10:35 the cycle path looks attractive. How long does it take to cycle to the office via that path and is it practical for commuting? Whether you can cycle or need to drive to work is a major factor in deciding how much to spend on a car or bicycle.
@ZeroTailpipe
@ZeroTailpipe 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I think it’s 20-30 mins via that path. Not tried it yet due to the long hill at the end. For now it’d be lovely. Once my children arrive they need to commute with me to their schools. That adds other considerations... :)

Moving to another country is filled with decisions/questions/concerns. However it's also important to take time too. Trying the zoe for a month is a good idea. Sampling new ideas for transport can also be fun. Life has a way of steering you in the right direction as long as your mind is open. You talk about your ioniq in the same way I used to talk about my leaf once it was gone!!! Ironically I'm looking at a zoe 40 kWh I to drive back to Malta possibly in next few months. It's all a journey at the end of the day

You must ask your landlord if you can install a proper type 2 outlet, (you pay for everything, and the outlet will increase the value of the house you rent) so you can charge your car in a proper way. (Everything you need to know about that option below! :-) ) Be aware though, that still many people in the nordic countries, are against these cars for the stupid and wrong reasons I am sure you already know about, so it might be turned down, even in Norway, since people who rent out houses, tend to be the kind that earns money on renting out, but doesn't really care about other people because they are more conscious about having something nice to rent out. Just statistically speaking here, many people are also completely reasonable, however people who rent out apartements and houses tend to be picky about not allowing any kind of modifications of a, because they may have bad experience with what renters have done, and the fact that they are more conscious about them being owners, having the right to decide everything, even when a renter may suggest something quite reasonable. It is though true, that the danish electrical system is quite fragile, they have less good outlets than your english plug, and the Schuko-system that many others, including Norway, uses. However - even Schuko has its limitations, so even if the risk is quite low, it is not so popular to charge via Schuko anymore, now, even though you set your car at just 6 amps, which should be completely fine, even over several hours. Even 8 or 10A should be fine, as long as the outlet is in good shape. It could be that the house have a very limited total amperage of electricity in, that could be a problem, however let's not give up yet. :-) The addition of a charging outlet, will result in an extra installation in the fuse box, that would complicate things further, so have a look in your fusebox, and see how much electricity you have available, especially the main circuit breaker, what is the total amperage. I know that danish people tend to use gas for cooking, not electricity, while norwegian household electricity is sized to accomodate electric cooking. The total tends to be 63A total. Ideally - a charging station would be programmed to not let more electricity through, to charge the car, than the fuse supports, eg. set to 8A when the fuse lets 10A through. I would guess that there are rules in Denmark as there is here, that you must have a dedictated circuit to the charging of the electric car, and that it must both be grounded and protected against ground faults, none of these considerations, being any challenge to an electrician, of course. I know there are some companies like elbilhjelpen.no, that sells "portable" charging stations, so that you connect it through an industrial plug, so you can take it with you, when you move. I don't know if what they sell, is compatible with the danish plugs, but it doesn't hurt to check, and maybe your landlord will be more positive to the consept of installing just an industrial contact, which you connect the charging station to, a less "permanent" option that does allow you to keep the charging station and feels less absolute for the landlord, opening up the option for other renters to connect their charging station, later on. Ok, so here's my suggestion, and let us get optimistical and say, you can, legally install an extra circuit with maximum 16A draw of electricity. Schuko or whatever similar danish (poorer) contact is not an option, so what do we have then - yes - we have the 16A blue CEE industrial contact! First you do the installation of the blue 16A industrial (CEE) contact on the wall - the first one here, on a dedicated circuit with ground protection: www.nst-dk.dk/shop/109-vaegudtag/ and from Elbilhjelpen, you would for example need these two products: 1. A charging station: www.yourvismawebsite.com/elbilhjelpenno-as/shop/product/8-14-16a-ladestasjon-6-ma-jfb-og-5m-t2?tm= And an alternate cable with CEE plug, to plug in to the CEE contact on the wall. 2. The blue CEE plug to the charging station. www.yourvismawebsite.com/elbilhjelpenno-as/shop/product/16a-cee-installasjons-kit-til-353-ratio-serie It should be possible to find this gear in Denmark too, I suggest you apply for a membership in the Danish electric car association and ask there, however I am pretty sure you will be able to find out everything, based upon my suggestions above. ( fdel.dk/ ) And yes, this will cost some danish kroner, but so will the quick charging too, so you will still be better off, doing this as I suggested.

Duncan, have a look a Rad Power Bikes in the Netherlands. The Rad Rhino has 750 w of power, and is a great commuter bike. I already had a standard electric bike with the 250 w central motor, but the Rhino is such a revelation due to the 4 inch fat tyres. I really like your channel. I mostly watch german channels, but your way of informing is very good and interesting. If you are an "ioniq guy" like me and you like efficiency, comfort and quietness (in this order), like me, I suggest looking out for a Tesla Model 3 for around 44000 Euros if you can or maybe wait until the updated ioniq is out? And what if you just buy a used ioniq "old" for around 20 to 25000 euros.... The Zoe especially with the coming 52 kwh battery is a great car and even has ccs, but, please dont misunderstand, is a car "for women" and not suitable for a small family. Maybe the VW ID 3 with 45 kwh or the Peugeot e 2008 could be the ones, but this is future. Besides, i wish you a very good time in Denmark. Very nice, very relaxing country....

It sounds like you are gradually narrowing down your transport preferences, even though you may understandably feel a bit worn out by the process! You have several months before the winter weather adds to the pressure, so it's all cool. Is the not water in your new apartment from a central boiler for the whole block? In Rejeravick, Iceland the thermal springs have been captured so all homes have a red (hot) and blue (cold) water input. Amazing. Perhaps surprising that EV charging is not a feature of your new accommodation. Good luck!

Every new building or retrofit needs to be required to install electric vehicle charging options. Car parks / lots all need to have a few EV chargers and a few standard outlets for slow / long term charging. All cities need to become ebike friendly for local city travel. An ebike combined with an EV car share option might work. Check with a local EV owners group on Facebook or other website and get some suggestions from them. Many EV owners have a monthly / quarterly meet up that may be helpful when sorting out your options.

Honestly compared to the new Zoe 50 to the ionic 40 they are two different types of car the old Zoe feels exactly that its origins are from 2011-2012 the ionic even in 28kw guise is a leaf competitor apart from the size difference you will notice the tech difference the charge speed. The thing you have to remember most is Denmark has a car tax different from U.K. look into that before even purchasing before ordering. As for the car the Zoe charging is a big issue this will be fixed in the new model I think you can apply for a charge station to be installed in your dwelling car park (7kw ) but cannot remember the details but the infrastructure is superior around towns for 7kw charging. The big thing for you to decide is can you live with the limitations and what is a car to you, if it’s a method of a to b the the Zoe is ok if it’s to survive the harshest winter roads as well as rapid easy for road trips then think about swapping when you can afford it or look at the second hand car market but ev’s are in demand so don’t expect bargains

I agree with Steve, chill and take your time, better to make the right choice. One thing that I would suggest would be to talk with your new work colleagues and neighbours, also observe how they organise their transport choices. Local knowledge is invaluable, I speak as a welshman who relocated to The Hague for 6 years, without a car and survived ( more healthily) using bicycles (self powered and e-bike) and a great integrated public transport system ...admittedly my family remained in Wales....I have found re-integration into a UK transport system much more difficult since my return!!!! Rubbish public transport with zero integration, diabolical cycling infrastructure and a distrust of electric vehicles andbopen aggression toward cyclist....enjky Denmark 👍

Totally agree with you on the choice of Zoe. The lack of rapid charging will really frustrate you without the ability to charge at home. The infotainment system is pretty poor, especially on the early models. It does improve, slightly, with the newer models. Android Auto (and iPlayer I think) appear on models that would be around a year old now. My 18 reg doesn't have them!! I was in the RAF and served most of my time abroad. You have my sympathies around getting set up in a foreign country. I had people around me to help settle in, even then it was difficult. It takes about 3 to 4 months to get your bearings. Are you at work yet? Your workmates should be able to point you in the right direction. I agree with the others. Take a moment to relax and think of something else. Everyone is used to various different cars. Zoe has sold many more units than the Hyundai, lots of no tailpipe emissions. That is due to the original commitment Renault made. In the UK the Zoe is the perfect car for our country roads. Info system on both ours have never been an issue. Ioniq was nice to drive, wasn’t available apart from a demo and felt like a generic interior....although still nice to drive and mainly electric is the key. It would be best in the sector if it was ever available. Zoe may not be for you, especially due to making sure you keep costs low. Maybe wait for new Zoe soon as it is definitely a brilliant looking EV and no one will come close to the quantity and price, I guarantee that one. In this consumer age it may be too small for you still. Good luck with the move, really exciting time for you and your family and very interesting.

We have owned that Zoe model for two months and although it is far from perfect, it’s excuseable. We carried five people (3 with luggage for 10 days) from Gatwick to Brighton and it was excellent. We get 180-200 miles per charge. The Zoe is design crap. The infotainment, interior, regen etc is total crap. Wait for the new Ionic. Buy the old one for a really good deal. You know it is a great car, you know you like it, etc... Until then buy a small folding e bike. Cost control. Ikea solves any short term pain. Look at a pod moving option. Sell what you can buy cheaper than moving. Sell, donate or recycle all books, except things you look at every day. Same with everything else. All electronics take to the pawn shop in the UK. Pay off your phone. Get a new phone or deal for bring your own phone in Denmark. Books you replace with ebook from Amazon or the like. Minimalism is better when moving. Give dishes away. Buy replacements at Ikea. Keep old can openers, not electric.

I feel tour pain and I think you’re over thinking things and trying to do too many things at once. I’d say absolute no to the Zoe longer than a weekend trip to buy some shipping, the granny charger is so fussy it’s 50/50 and rapid is so slow it’s just about unusable. Stick to the ebike idea for permanent transport, public for longer journeys and tada for short term where you need distance or carrying capacity. I’ve moved to Norway and Belgium in the past and I feel you pain about infrastructure differences and I think you’d be wise to save your money until you’ve been there long enough to qualify for resident rate leasing and finance schemes and save a fortune. Ask your workplace if they offer anywhere to charge an EV. Many do. Getting an EV, when you have no home charging is IMO not viable. At least consider a short lease gas car until you get all settled in. If you decide to get an e-bike, remember you need to lock it to something everytime you leave it. e-bike theft in the big cities in Denmark is rampart.
