Missing Teen Jay Slater: "His Mum Thinks It's A KIDNAPPING" | Investigation Underway In Tenerife

Talk’s Ian Collins is joined by international presenter Maddie Hale to discuss the investigation surrounding British teenager Jay Slater.
The 19-year-old went missing during a holiday in Tenerife and police have now focused efforts on a ravine near to where he was last heard from.
Search and rescue personnel carefully combed through dead palm trees covering a river at the bottom of the hillside near to a property he had reportedly been driven to.
Mr Slater, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, disappeared following an attempt to walk back to his accommodation after missing a bus.
He had attended the NRG music festival on the island with two friends before his disappearance.

There’s a difference between being ‘street smart’ when you’re a bit of a scally in your own home town and then being shrewd when you’re in a foreign country and been off your Barnet for two or three days at a festival. In reality he probably lacks a lot of common sense. Attempting to walk 11 hours and in the wrong direction with no water etc proves this.

I worked in Oswaldtwistle, the town where Jay lives, for 25 years and have visited Tenerife many times. I have driven around the area in Tenerife where he was last seen and the difference between the two is an understatement. If Jay thought for one moment he could walk through those hills and mountains for 11 hours without water, sun protection and walking attire makes him appear very immature and arrogant. He may seem to his mother to be smart and able to look after himself but in reality and in very different circumstances he is totally unprepared. Also in Los Chritianos and Las Americas there are gangs of Africans that will kill you if you cross them. There is a very organised criminal gang operating in those two resorts and you need your wits about you and some knowledge of how they will try to rip you off. It is possible Jay has inadvertently been caught in their web of crime through one way or another.

The first bus is at 6.20 am. The next at 9.35. Hence, IF he was in Masca, he would have only needed to wait ONE hour if he called this chick up at 8.30. And IF you are in Masca and you merely LOOK at the winding road ahead of you UP UP UP like a serpentine, you ARE going to realize that you will get nowhere fast. There is exactly ONE road out. You WILL sit down and wait for that one hour. Either he was somewhere completely different or the whole story gets stinkier by the day. There are no people in Masca who would kidnap nor hurt anybody. There's only old folks living there, 4 restaurants and a souvenir shop. At night time, there are only crickets and frogs. And in the morning hrs, around about the 9 mark, busloads full of tourists starts flooding in and by 10 you can't get a parking spot anymore. IF he was there, then it could be possible that some other tourist offered him a ride, or as said, he was not in Masca at all. And in such case, he would have been in Santiago del Teide (BIG village on the other side of the mountain) or toward the norther ridge in Erjos or El Tanque or thereabouts. Now, that area is a different story because there is forest there, but you do not get fricken lost on the road to Masca. Not a chance.

Ironically, if he was serving jail time which he should have got for violently attacking another young man as part of a vicious gang with a machete, golf club and axe and then laughed and joked during court proceedings, he would still be alive and well right now. Was very worried for this lad at first until I read about his character. I wouldn't wish anyone to come to harm but am really suspicious of all of this now. I live on the island, and it's very common for British lads to come and buy gear on tick from the Moroccans, then flip it at festivals and bars. The Moroccans have a rep for teaching kids who don't pay their debts a hard lesson. In this case, this young thug tried to rip off the wrong crew. Now, the GoFundMe is either to pay his debt with interest, or the Moroccans have made an example of him so no other upstarts try the same. Either way, you live by the machete, you die by the machete.

Early hours of the morning was probably fairly cool he thought he would walk the general direction and would find his way once he got on the main drag with recognisable landscape . the guy they did it too also has a shady past including sexual assault, robbing the elderly and something to do with minors.. not that any of that excuses what happened to him but he’s also reckless. Regardless of jays past absolutely no one deserves to be ‘lost’ in a foreign country. A 19 year old who is clearly troubled and into drugs (as a lot his age are) and was part of a gang who violently attacked another teenager, should have been sent to prison for his part but wasn't, is missing and quite possibly deceased. Have some empathy and compassion. If we all went around writing people off for serious mistakes they made in life, we become less human. Not one person posting vile comments has to like Jay because of his past behaviour, but for goodness sake, think of him first and foremost as a human being who has gone missing. Think of his family who are naturally worried and fear the worst. I worked in the UK prison system with teens who had committed heinous crimes and you'd be surprised just how many teenagers Jay's age are lost with no direction in life. They act out because they don't have a good sense of self or personal identity. They get into drugs and gangs. But you'd be amazed just how many turn their lives around by being in prison as they begin to slowly open up and speak about their lives. It is only then, by speaking up in therapy (one to one and in groups) that many of them change their lives around for the better. In therapy, we never ever write people off. Sadly, society in general do tend to write people off instead of looking inward and working on their own stuff and asking themselves why they lack empathy for certain people?

Don't understand why people think it's "karma" or justifiable that the guy has gone missing just because he attacked another kid in his past, obviously it's wrong and disturbing and he went through the court system and they dealt with him, but no one deserves death or whatever has happened to him as a justification for that. My sympathy is with the victim of the knife attack. Imagine if he'd died and was your child. The perpetrator had a choice to carry and use a knife. This man didn't have any value for his victim's life so why should anyone feel different for him. It's not about wishing him ill, but stating that sometimes you reap what you sow. In this case, it looks like he may have been an unsavoury character with unsavoury connections that have led to his downfall.

It was early in the morning, not late at night, when Jay called Lucy. He had no reason to be so discouraged and scared because he was far from his accommodation. Two hours to wait for the next bus wasn't such a terribly long amount of time, and he could have quietly waited at one of the restaurants, where he could have also drunk something and put his mobile phone on charge. That's why I tend to believe Jay did not have an accident, but was killed by someone who hid the body. God only knows how much I hope to be wrong.

Some people are patronizing and they think that it is only the British police who works well. He probably didn’t want to stay in the cafe coz he got thrown out of the BnB for trying to steal a watch from the two guys just when they were about to drive him back so they checked after he’d gone and he’d taken other stuff so he probably thought they’d go looking for him. He phoned Lucy and said he was in trouble she said she’d get him and drove there with a woman in her hotel and asked where he was and the two guys said they threw him out for stealing but she’s left that part out They even stayed an extra day to help look for him and told police about it. Everyone is asking why they left so quick and they’re having to explain what happened

The theft explains why he left and didn't want to wait for a bus or stay in cafe. The landlady passed him 1.5km away near beauty spot. She said she was going home odd time to go home if you run a cafe above. Her partner owns villa. So all appear connected to this villa. Lucy miraculously knows how to find this villa out of nowhere. He could not be that far in the park as it takes at least an hour to walk 3 miles in mountains and he said he was lost at 08.00 then 08.50. But landlady saw him twice just after 8. And again cut a 08.30 when she passed him. Did she pick him up. Was her partner he robbed from his guests. His phone had to be driven up to where it last pinged. Unless he was running. But still He could not have made 3 miles in 35 minutes. Seen by landlady twice after 8 and once on road 1.5 km away. Did she knock him off road. That tells me either someone picked him up on road and dropped him in mountain. Or his phone is in mountain because we don't see Jay in last photo and clothes are different. Did he walk to another bar to be collected by Lucy UK guys were leaving Monday. They had hire car. Why wouldn't they drop him off. They stayed Tuesday to help police. Lucy sounds scared. Is she scared because this is made up and she knows it or is she scared because she knows something has happened to Jay and needs money to bail him out. Someone is accessing his Instagram account.
