From footage I have seen, Stockton Rush was a man who considered safety standards as a hindrance and inconvenience to his ego and ambitions. It is becoming more and more apparent that Oceangate refused to seek certification because they knew, that with the Titan, they simply wouldn't achieve it. Reporters asked this gentleman yesterday about this sub and he refused to be specific about his concerns. i want to thank him for being more open today. Stockton Rush was a con man, not an adventurer, not an explorer. He was completely invested in his own delusions about himself and completely ignored the reality of the environment he was trying to expose his craft and the people with him too. Now he and his four victims are dead. I have absolutely massive respect for this man who looked at the completely amateur device and insane way Rush ran his company and said. "We are not risking our lives in THAT." And again, I thank him for being specific. He is saving people's lives by telling them what he saw that saved his and all his friends lives.

I feel so sad for the youngest passenger whose aunt said he was afraid to go because it didn't seem safe but he went anyway to bond with his father. On another note, I don't see why uncertified vessels are still allowed to go into the water... isn't the purpose of certification to keep people safe? UPDATE: After making this post, the mother said that her son wanted to go and was looking forward to it. The information I heard on tv from his aunt was incorrect.

The problem is they never operated using a controller before then that somehow got disconnected and the speed and direction of their sinking was up to the ocean waves. That’s how they suspect the incident to happen. Also, without certification, maintenance could be slacked on and as far as the controller system, it was a new update that was not tested before at that depth.

What I find upsetting about the shoddiness of this craft isn't so much that these people took a risk going down there in it, but that the recovery and rescue workers were put in danger and it cost a fortune to carry out, all because of their irresponsibility using an unsafe craft. I don't think the cousin of Hamish Harding should be complaining that they didn't get there fast enough. And now we even know that this happened on their way down and was instantaneous, so getting to it any faster wouldn't have mattered anyway.

Yes the whole thing is very “shoddy” as well as with the actual titancic. I watched a documentary of the titanic on KZbin a while ago about “what really happened to the titanic” It was a big money scandal in the end. It’s all very eye opening and at the heart of it all, pride which sank them all to fall to the deepest depths of the ocean. Definitely a message to us all in learning what’s really important! Not wealth or an easy buck. If we happen to make money while being responsible and doing the jobs we love is one thing but seeking wealth for wealths sake is a dangerous endeavor.

They were quite literally blown to pieces. After doing some digging on what actually takes place during a deep water implosion i quickly realized there are only small pieces left of actual flesh and bone which is why the people giving interview from the rescue effort tiptoe around the question of recovering the bodies. Its one thing to be slowly lowered to deep depths where lungs get crushed and what not but an implosion or "rapid decompression" is literally an explosion backwards where water moving in to fill the void at thousands of feet per second shreds anything in its path. Even the debris scene is only the chunky solid metal parts of the sub. There are no bodies to recover.

The Titanic was ironically up to code at the time; just the standards were inadequate. In this case, regulations and common sense were being flouted. It wasn't even certified. Unless they don't mind being turned to pressure tenderized mincemeat, nobody with the right mind would have got into that brittle tube of carbon fibre even of they were paid handsomely for the risk.

$250k is actually too cheap for this. That is why it's shoddy. Really to do trips like this safely, the sub has to be single use. Really just a single trip, and then disposed of. They already have utilized single use subs to set records and then decommissioned them. That's how you avoid stress fractures from repeated use.

Knock off xbox controller…
@mr.e822
@mr.e822 Жыл бұрын
The concept of using a game controller for control is honestly not concerning to me. It’s not something that’s unique to this particular device, and it has been implemented in some organizations that are MUCH more reliable (the US military has started using Xbox controllers for certain devices in an effort to reduce necessary training for sailors who likely have experience with such devices.) That being said, they were using a cheap knockoff controller (actually the same one I used to control for a robotic rover in one of my robotics classes), and it may not have been reliable. Despite that, however, it is in all likelihood not the controller that failed. And if they DID crash into the sea floor to cause the implosion, that could be user error, and it would still best be blamed on a lack of safety systems to prevent it, rather than the controller that the person was using to steer them that way.

I get the impression that there are at least a few people who have no idea what the xbox controller does or doesn't do, and what half-dozen or fewer simple commands the sub's power and control systems would use. That part worked just fine on the sub's 20 previous visits to Titanic. The viewport is probably what failed.

If what I've heard is true - that the head of the sub company fired anyone who raised concerns about the safety of the sub - then that tells you all you need to know about the company. I have a huge love of the sea (my father was in the Navy during WWII) and a huge amount of respect for it and what it can do. You *never* take shortcuts with anything to do with the sea. It's one thing to control it via game pad, I can actually see that being possible. But the fact it was wireless was suicidal, locked in a steel tube below the sea with no spares, no replaceable batteries ... seriously one cable could have possibly saved their lives instead of what happened (apparently the controls disconnected and the sub lost control, diving too fast). And the funny thing is wired pads are usually cheaper!
