Glad y'all mentioned the similarities to the first film. The first four films each have a different director and feel quite different, and I feel like the Christopher McQuarrie films (so starting with this one) really do a pretty good job of setting a more coherent tone for the franchise by drawing from various past films. This movie has the moody fog scenes and noir vibes of the first film, the female character who is undercover as the villain's ally from the second, the more serious stakes of the third, and the fun vibes and focus on stunts and locations of Ghost Protocol. My appreciation for this one has grown so much upon revisiting it recently.

2:02 Those are artillery shells. They are designed to be fired at high pressure out of a cannon. You also typically screw a fuse into the top of them before firing to make them go off on impact/or proximity or after a certain time, so parachuting down to the ground isn't going to make them go off.

This movie always reminds me of the time I almost drowned. I lost consciousness underwater swimming back up to the surface of a pool when I went to touch the bottom after shooting down from a water slide. Luckily after passing out my body floated back up to the top and I regained consciousness as soon as my face broke the water surface. If it makes you feel any better, it was actually a pretty peaceful feeling.
@RobertMorgan
@RobertMorgan Жыл бұрын
I didn't lose consciousness, but had a scary moment snorkeling in the Bahamas. I swam down as far as I felt I could, and when I looked up I almost panicked because It looked like I was so far down. Made it to the surface ok, but in my panic and inexperience mostly, as soon as I hit the surface I took a HUGE breath.....of all the salt water in my snorkel I hadn't spit out, but by then I had ahold of myself, floated, calmed down, then went to shore for a massively overpriced cab ride back to the cruise ship. I think the peaceful part only comes if you get past the nitro-raw-terror phase first.
@fredrice8650
@fredrice8650 Жыл бұрын
@@RobertMorgan I think the reason why you didn't have the peaceful part was because you made it to the surface. The peaceful part for me was the acceptance that I wasn't going to reach the surface, and letting go, sort of allowing myself to go unconscious. It would have been a completely different story if I had inhaled any sort of water though, so I'm sure that adds to your experience.

A lifetime ago, I saw a production of the opera "Turandot" for a music theory class requirement. (We were to write a paper on a live musical orchestration of our choice). On a whim I asked a beautiful young lady to accompany me for an evening at Edmonton's Jubilee Auditorium. It was one of those evenings that has become indelibly burnt into my memory for how incredible the music, performances, and company were. Despite not being a live theater supporter at the time, it made quite the impression on myself and the young lady. I still have the program from the show in a keepsake box somewhere. There were no attempted assassinations that evening thankfully (except for the one on my heart).

The air resistance that pulled Ethan out of the plane is the same air resistance that would put him safely on the ground. It actually kind of seems like a contingency plan. If the plane is going to crash, they get jettison the package and get on the ground away from the plane crash without exploding. And they're probably not armed. There's no way these guys would let themselves get caught picking a whole bouquet of whoopsie daisies.

My favorite film of the franchise, though the first holds a special place for me. The second was off-the-wall John Woo craziness. Unpopular opinion - the third felt like a generic 2hr episode of Alias (except for Hoffman). The 4th elevated the material to unforgettable setpieces and crisper pacing... But There's just something about this 5th one I really love - the chases, Ferguson, the reveal at the end with Baldwin, the villain, and IMO, the best team combination (It's a shame Renner didn't return). The scene at the opera is just *chef's kiss*.

M-I:5 was topsy-turvy to me. Too much to almost handle. I saw this one in IMAX as well. Directed by Oscar-winning writer of The Usual Suspects (1995), Christopher McQuarrie. He worked on 2 earlier films with Cruise:writer/director of Jack Reacher (2012) and writer on Edge of Tomorrow (2014); which are both enjoyable. This newer team with Renner coming back as Brandt, introducing Rebacca Ferguson as Ilsa (Doctor Sleep, Hercules) and Alec Baldwin as the CIA boss was pretty good. Meeting the match of a lifetime with The Syndicate. Sean Harris as the leader, Solomon Lane was geniusly sinister. I was listening to Hunt's message at the end of M:I-4 and knew these were the next bad guys. Couldn't wait to see them go mano a mano. Cruise once again, the consumate performer as he is. The stunts (Air, Underwater, on the road) are quite amazing. Mr. McQuarrie sticks with the franchise from here on out. Making for some more incredible sequels.
