Brian De Palma understands the expectations of the audience well. That's why he created that insane tunnel sequence with his crew. You have to pay off a movie of this calibre with something mind-blowing. Tom Cruise understood this masterclass lesson and forged a series that's still exciting to this day.

I love that they're bringing back Kittridge for the next movie, after like 27 years. I also love that the actor, Henry Czerny, is somehow typecast as "Slimy CIA agent". Speaking of which, you guys should really do Clear And Present Danger, along with the other early Tom Clancy moves. The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear And Present Danger are all classics IMO.

One of my favorite action adventure spy franchises! Alan Silvestri, composer of Predator, MARVEL'S The Avengers and Back To The Future, was hired by Brian DePalma to compose the score, but he was fired from the project as DePalma felt that the score wasn't powerful enough and hired Danny Elfman. Silvestri would use his rejected score for the Schwarzenegger action adventure ERASER.
@mnomadvfx

To be fair Eraser wasn't exactly Silvestri's best - I'd be inclined to side with De Palma on this one.

@@tomasjohannesson1457 3 to me is a good movie no doubt but apart from 2 scenes there’s nothing that really identifies it as a Mission Impossible movie, it’s also just as jarring a tonal shift as MI2 is while 1,4,5 and 6 all manage to be coherent largely in what they are.

This was one of several tv series, created by Bruce Gellar. Among the many iconic series of the 1960s Spy craze. There was a continuation of the series in the late 1980s with characters from the original and newly added characters. The theme by Lalo Scrifrin is so timeless with Intrigue and excitement. Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen from the group, U2 did the new version for the 1st movie. Tom Cruise in the mid-1990s officially became a producer. Both Cruise and miss Paula Wagner formed a company. Both were given the greenlight for the rights to make M:I as an movie. This first film matches the tv series at almost perfect beat and Cruise becomes the consummate stunt performer we know him to be today. As the tv series resurged back into reruns, Cruise definitely had a franchise and we couldn't wait for more missions on the big screen.

this really blew people's minds when it came out.. and it set the bar high for spy movies after it. watching it again all this time later.. the twists and turns are still really solid and unexpected. the story and script feel fresh even if it looks a bit dated. but yeah it was a blockbuster that didn't treat its audience like idiots, which most action movies did at the time

Emilio's death at the beginning has always been ridiculous. It's not a high speed elevator. You can see how slow he's moving. He already showed he can hop off with room along the side. And what's with those elevator murder spikes?!? Can't you just shift left or right to avoid them? So silly. It's like standing there waiting to get run over by a Zamboni. 😂😂😂

Hey, Maple and Arianna! This franchise is based on the 1960s TV SERIES starring Peter Graves and its 1980s revival. Both runs of the series were more about long cons by a small team of operatives such as the opening set piece and relied on the gimmick of wearing disguises and utilizing cool spy gadgets. The movies retain those elements but are more about white-knuckle stunts performed by Cruise himself! The LALO SCHIFRIN score is one of TV's most iconic themes and never fails to set the electrifying pace! What many people don't realize is that JON VOIGHT is playing JIM PHELPS, the team leader of the TV series played by PETER GRAVES in the '60s original and '80s reboot! That means the hero of the series turns into the villain of the movie! Graves was actually approached for a cameo but he didn't like the twist about his signature character and declined to participate. Phelps kills his young wife because his ego couldn't tolerate her being attracted to his young protege. He wanted absolute loyalty and commitment from her which she betrayed by coming to Ethan's defense. Having her work in close proximity to a guy like Ethan, their September-May relationship was doomed from the get-go! Lol. The hot youngsters' mutual attraction was evident in the first scene! The series is mostly consistently excellent and is one of the best action franchises ever made! The first three films are products of their directors bearing their undeniable signatures. This was every inch a BRIAN DEPALMA film with POV shots, flashback sequences and low-angle vantage points. DePalma was most definitely inspired by JULES DASSIN's heist films for the famous Langley caper scene. In both 1955's "RIFIFI" and 1964's "TOPKAPI", the intricate thefts are plotted out for the audience, executed in SCORELESS SILENCE, initiated from a ceiling ingress and nearly foiled with a slip. The second film is every inch a JOHN WOO movie and the third film is every inch a J.J. ABRAMS movie. Tom Cruise is a weird maniac in real-life but he is also known internationally for his body of work as the MOST FAMOUS MOVIE STAR ON THE PLANET!!! It's amazing to me how young people have access to more information than at any other time in history yet seem to be cloistered in oblivious little bubbles of their own making. SMH. TOM CRUISE films worth seeing besides the "M:I" films: The Outsiders Risky Business The Color of Money Rain Man Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick Far and Away Born on the Fourth of July The Firm A Few Good Men Jerry Maguire Tropic Thunder Eyes Wide Shut Vanilla Sky Oblivion Edge of Tomorrow Minority Report The Last Samurai Collateral Valkyrie Knight and Day Rock of Ages Jack Reacher 2

Go back to dracula, Dressed to Kill(the original Hannibal lecktor) or one of my all time faves, Body Double, and of course, Carrie or Blowout! Love this movie, but hate the tunnel fight at the end - it just strains credibility too much. The idea that you'd even be able to control a helicopter being forcibly dragged by a train into a tunnel the width of two trains. The idea that pilot could then retain enough control to try and murder Ethan with the blades, and then survive those blades colliding with the ceiling of the tunnel. And then for the coup de gras, the absurd explosion that doesn't have enough explosive force to kill Ethan, but DOES have enough force to fling him back onto the train with minor injuries at worst. They also do the "asshole agency guy who is actually a good guy all along" thing multiple times across this series, which is just lazy writing.

mission impossible used to be a tv show, back in the 60s. this movie's the sequal to the show, because of jon voight's character, jim phelps. phelps was the original show's hero, who [as we saw] went rogue. phelps was regarded as the best imf agent to ever serve and yet he turned. it's hinted that phelps had not only had been selling secrets for decades but possibly had a hand in killing his former team members. it's also why cruise's character's always suspected of being a rogue agent in the series: because he was trained by phelps. and if someone like phelps could turn, so can hunt.
