This year was a rough one with the cold weather right before we arrived, however, the whole area is set up for some really great birding opportunities.

There's a whole birding area down here. Plus the tourism that's available is pretty great.

@@SQUEEZEtheDAY My grandpa (Great War vet) was given 40 acres settlement for War injuries He received $50 per month Veteran’s pay. They were very poor. No electricity or running water. My Grandma bought 2 chicks and a Jersey cow. She raised the chicks and sold eggs. The Cream from the Jersey cow she sold to the local ice cream shop or made butter. They gleaned various produce but mostly tomatoes which they canned in a gasoline canner. They had tomatoes of one form every day. They raised one calf a year for my grandpa to butcher. They took ok in washing (gasoline washer) & ironing (coal?) . Hurricane in 1933 devastated the area and crippled their horse Lady. My Grandpa had to put her down. They sold the property 1946? But kept the Mineral Rights. In 1999 my brother and I took our Mom to Mission TX. We went to Hildago County to search deed. Property had been donated by a cattle co to City of Mission. Then we went to Mission City Hall. The land was turned into a nature preserve. I rented 4wheel drive and took Mom all over property. The Mission. (the Well and stone that had been ground into area to grind corn) Where the old PO and telephone switchboard were (she worked there as teenager). The Park with the gezebo. She recounted the wonderful 4th of July celebrations there (the one time of the year they kept the cream and made homemade ice cream) plus made gallons of lemonade. The Rio Grande. Then the Harlan Block Memorial Park. She went to high school with Tom Landry and Harlem Block who held the Flag on Iwa Jima. (My mom and a friend took his personal items to his parents in Mission. ) My Grandmother bought 2 chicks. Raised chicken and eggs to sell. there. In 1980 ARCO contacted my mothers sister about drilling there. Nothing happened. I should write a book about their life there from 1926-1946. My Mother and her 2 sisters came to CA to go to Loma Linda University Medical school. My Grandparents followed in 1946 after my mother left for college (she was the youngest). I was born in CA 1949.
