A refreshed look at an oft-covered blues number. This month I dug deep into William Brown's original 1942 recording to uncover the secrets buried within. I present an abridged version here. You can access my 50-minute lesson video, a full transcription of the 1942 recording, and a shorter score that covers the basics to get you playing it more quickly on my Patreon account. Really enjoyed your version. Way back in early 70's I heard someone play this tune and he told me it was the Stefan Grossman version from The LP "How to Play Blues Guitar". I bought the LP and it was the first number I learned. No one then had heard of Mississippi Blues but now it's a standard everyone likes and plays and embellishes. Who would have thought all these years later you could fire up youtube and get all this?

Mad respect for everyone like you who learned to play guitar when all you had to work with was records and books! That must've been so much harder than just going on KZbin and watching a tutorial. But we do live in amazing times now, don't we?

Yes his recording is what made me initially fall in love with this piece. Larsons too.

Can you tell me which album of Grossman's this is on please? His discography seems like a difficult thing to navigate. I would love to hear his studio recording of this.

Beautiful rendition. It took me 4 months to learn this a few years ago and you have some variations I will enjoy adding to mine.

Bravo, Very fluent, played on the perfect guitar. I think your style would transfer very nicely to kindhearted woman , or maybe the clapton version of Key to the highway, I would really like to hear you play an acoustic version of Lenny, I think you would smash it

Very well done, Andrew. Good tempo and phrasing. Very nice, easy swing to your playing. Also, very good sounding guitar, nicely woody.

Wonderful. A player unknown to me, until now. I would call this "classical blues" reminiscent of Big Bill Broonzy, Lonnie Johnson, etc. Guitar styles had advanced so much in the 10 years or so from Robert Johnson et al to the WW2 era. Thank you!

For a delta player, I was surprised by how refined his playing was when I really dug into the recording. Harmonies beyond what I normally have come to expect.

I love how you match one of your collection of vintage guitars to recreate "that" sound to suit each presentation.. mmm maybe I should take up guitar again.

This is a cool video Andrew. I have a request. I would love to see you play Leo Kottke Mona Ray and Taking a Sandwich to a Feast. I posted a very amateur video of myself playing Taking a Sandwich to a Feast about 2 weeks ago. It's not very good though. Look back at "Dreams and all that Stuff". That's a great album. I would be delighted to see you play something off of that, like you played Constant Traveler. Keep 'um comin' brother. Steve.🎼

Awesome song. That tune is 80 years old? Makes me wonder what Taylor Swift tunes or current music will be covered in the year 2100 🤔🎸
