I spent 8 years working on line boats on upper and lower. No better life then working on the river. Missouri River was probably the wildest in high water going south out of Kansas City.

Wish I'd found your channel earlier. My Dad always loved the river and when I was 4 he took our family on a trip that wound up in Clayton Iowa. I had come down with a nasty case of Strep throat and the local doctor gave me a couple of injections and we stayed there for several day 'til I got better. I had never seen barge strings before and fell in love with all the traffic. The Milwaukee Road trains going by didn't hurt either. That was back in '64. Love the night action, thanks much!

When I was a kid 12 my folks went camping and fishing at Clayton, they met a friend there who came and visited us and went fishing with us, he kept saying it never rains in Clayton! I dont remember it really stopped while there, he also said the fish always bite at Clayton! I dont remember hardly getting anything, but it was funny the way he would say it.

I was crappie fishing near the dam one night standing on the riprap shore. I happened to be wearing a red sweatshirt and a towboat that was approaching from downstream locked their spotlight on me for quite a while. Was pretty annoying but I assume they mistook me for a marker. I was on the right side as would be seen going upstream so I am pretty sure that is what was happening.

I love it when man starts telling everyone that we have global warming/cooling and that rivers are going to dry up. Then God says, "Oh Really?" "Watch this"
@marktwained
@marktwained Жыл бұрын
I never heard anybody, with any actual knowledge of the river, say it was going “dry”. It was shallow in spots that prevented anything over 9’ draft getting through main channel. That slowed commercial shipments during a busy time of year. Then God gave us some predictable and reliable precipitation to raise to “normal” low levels, then to good running river like today.

Captain I’m new to your channel but I enjoy watching. I have a question, do you have deck hands to do all of the ties or does who ever is putting the tow together take care of all of that?
@timothyboone5003
@timothyboone5003 Жыл бұрын
I can answer that question for him. There will be deckhands aboard the Captains boat and the tug that’s working him too. The number of deckhands aboard each can vary depending upon company manning requirements, area of operations, size of boat and tows, etc. Typically the Captain will have 2 or 3 deckhands on watch at all times. The tug would have 1 or 2, maybe 3 if they have one in training. The deckhands job is not finished when the barge is wired in. Every 6 hours each barge wing tank will be checked for water and all the wires will be checked for tightness.

@@marktwained What does that supposed to mean? Making "deals" with God? God is steering your wheel when you are born into His family, so are you saved? that is the bottom line. Jesus Christ, who is God, is the only way to Heaven, there is no other way. All hell is about to break loose, please don't get left behind. Today is the day of your salvation, now is the accepted time because tomorrow is not promised. We are saved by Grace through Faith, Ephesians 2:8-9 - the only gospel that saves lost souls when you "believe" by Faith, is found in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. Please get saved.

Bouys in the wheel can scare the sht out of a green deckhand. I was sent aft on night to investigate a sound. Just as I got to the stern here’s this bouy comes jumping up out of the water and slams the boat right beside me. I’ve been around the river all my life and never had I seen such a creature that my mind had imagined, that was coming to get me. Long story short, we were able to reverse it out. The bouy floated on down the rive. But the fear I felt that night has never left me. I miss working on the river. It’s something that if it ever gets in your blood it’s hard to get out. I’ve ran the full length of the upper and the Ohio, up the Tennessee to Nicklejack, up the Cumberland to Nashville. But never made it to the Lower.

The boys don’t get up there on this vessel. I’ve been up there many times. Not much in recent years. Started my river career decking on Illinois River in 1990s. Would turn boats on lower end go up to National Marine fleet office in the “ditch”, and get more barges to take south.
