This section is beautiful. Part of the JMT, I did it 60 days after you, no snow, no bugs, there were only 3 of us in the hiker camp, love the cafe grill, stuffed myself. You guys are kicking the miles.

This is the prettiest area of the Sierras so far. Thousand island lake, so beautiful. I did some day hiking around Tuolumne meadows into Lyell canyon. So now I can say I hiked the PCT ;-) It was such a peaceful hike along the lyell river I wish I would have had more time to camp somewhere in the backcountry and enjoy the beauty. Happy hiking, Reiner

Enjoying your hike. Takes dedication, courage and curiosity. I’ve spent a little time on the PCT in the Sierra City area but mostly in the Southern Oregon Cascades. In 1968 I spent a summer with the USFS cutting a new trail to Lake Ivern in Seven Lakes Basin. We were pulled off that job to repair parts of the PCT near Devil’s Peak. Maybe you will have some pictures of that area. I’m a Marin County native and grew up on Mt. Tamalpais in Mill Valley. Good luck!

Love it!...you went to my favorite Mammoth Pizza place. Thats always my number one stop when I get into Mammoth. Hopefully you checked out the Bakery....so good. You are there during the major Mosquito season, right during snow melt....been there, done that. Not fun fighting those nasty biters. Now days I do my trips in the Fall, after labor day...way less people and no more Mosquitos. Loving your trip. Brings back a lot of memories of my past trips.

And olive oil, always add olive oil to anything that will take it for the calories. It works real well with hummus. Just don't use coconut oil.

Hi Mari. I'm going to hike the PCT next year (2021 - turning 60, woo hoo!) and I want to vlog it. I really like the way you have the map of the PCT and the aplet that traces your route and shows the distance you traveled each day. How do you do that?! Maybe you could direct me to some links or other information where I could learn how to create a quality vlog next year so I can start my research and get practicing? If you could I'd be so grateful! I'm really enjoying your vlog which is totally psyching me up for the hike. I started the AT back in '08 on April Fool's Day (my birthday is in April so it seemed appropriate : -D). It was an epoch, life changing hike to Katahdin that year. Since then I've done the JMT in 2010 and the French route of the Camino de Santiago in 2013, but I've been too long on my bum! I'm really getting the itch to do another thru and we live in the Pacific Northwest, so the PCT is it! I CAN'T WAIT!

@@helpfulcommenter Last March (2020) I fell 10' off a ladder onto concrete and shattered my heel. After the surgery, I had a terrible allergic reaction to the metal plate and screws they put in so I had to have a second surgery! I'm walking again, but not without a significant amount of pain and my ankle joint is now pretty arthritic... The shorter answer is no. BUT, the good news is that I can walk and we bought some land. Quite a bit of land! So I'm turning my focus and passion to building a homestead there. Happy hiking, and if you make it to the Bridge of the God's be sure to contact me for some trail magic! I'll come get you and bring you in to Portland and host you for a break from the trail!

8:14 First views of Mt Banner (on the right) and Mt Ritter (on the left). John Muir on the first ascent of Mt Ritter (Oct 1872): "At length, I found myself at the foot of a sheer drop in the bed of the avalanche channel, which seemed to bar all further progress. The tried dangers beneath seemed even greater than that of the cliff in front; therefore, after scanning its face again and again, I commenced to scale it, picking my holds with intense caution. After gaining a point about half-way to the top, I was brought to a dead stop, with arms outspread, clinging close to the face of the rock, unable to move hand or foot either up or down. My doom appeared fixed. I must fall. There would be a moment of bewilderment, and then a lifeless tumble down the once general precipice to the glacier below. When this final danger flashed in upon me, I became nerve-shaken for the first time since setting foot on the mountain, and my mind seemed to fill with a stifling smoke. But the terrible eclipse lasted only a moment, when life burst forth again with preternatural clearness. I seemed suddenly to become possessed of a new sense. The other self -- the ghost of by-gone experiences, instinct, or Guardian Angel -- call it what you will -- came forward and assumed control. Then my trembling muscles became firm again, every rift and flaw was seen as through a microscope, and my limbs moved with a positiveness and precision with which I seemed to have nothing at all to do. Had I been borne aloft upon wings, my deliverance could not have been more complete. Above this memorable spot, the face of the mountain is still more savagely hacked and torn. But the strange influx of strength I had received seemed inexhaustible. I found a way without effort and soon stood upon the topmost crag in the blessed light."
