I have learned that Patience with orchids is a blessing. I have some houseplants as well, but they grow too fast and I had to give them away. They were taking over my orchid space lol. With orchids growing slow, you don't have to worry about them taking over too much space all that fast. I just wanted to let you know that my Maxillarila Tenufolia is finally blooming because of you. I have had it for 3 years now and last year I finally put it in higher light because of one of your videos. I was patient and now it has blooms. I really don't smell coconut either. I smell a tropical scent like a pina coloda which has a hint of coconut.

Hi Danny. Further to the question regarding a phal growing in water…if you find people who grow them in “water culture” they are usually only in water for a few days (or less) then dry for about 5 days. From what I’ve seen on YT the phal is in and out of water so in fact isn’t growing in water really. I agree with you that there are so many misleading videos that confuse novice growers. Thanks for sharing this interesting Q&A.

Hey Dany, Thanks for answering my question. Little update : I left the orchid in water for about two weeks. In that time she got rehydrated very well, but I had to keep a close eye on it and had to change the water regularly cause there were some sort of white residus/filaments developping on the roots. I repotted it last week with bark and new moss and in a smaller slitted pot. It's now growing new roots and leaf and doesn't show sign of dehydration. I'm hoping it's finally going to be okay but I'll keep monitoring. Thanks again for everything you give us orchid lovers, you're an angel 🥰

Thank you for the videos❤. I have some weird stuff going on with “some “ of my Phals. But I watched one of your Q&A. And I finally got a phal to have 14 flowers versus 5. It needed artificial light! I’m also learning about spagna and bark etc. But first Artificial light is a must , I live in Northern Alberta Canada. And 😂 I have triple glaze windows. No cold drafts or warmth getting in the house. ♥️Carol

I’ve been growing one keiki on a flower spike in a plastic bottle for almost a year now, it’s incredibly slow, it has now 2 roots and 2 leaves (about 4 cm each), so the flower spike is now kind of drying out… but I’ll keep the experiment going. I’ve put moss around the roots and have to spray it daily… so it is a lot of work…but also fun

I always agree with our girl, phals loves dry-wet cycles. Good ventilation for roots, we use barks or coconut husk or charcoal to create pockets of space to allow ventilation. These media won't hold water for long so need to complement with spagnum moss

I bought a Phal with a terminal flower spike & after she finished blooming I cut the flower spike thinking well, that’s it since I knew she couldn’t produce more leaves. Then I noticed new growth coming from the crown & hoped maybe it was a keiki. Well, it turned out to be another flower spike & she’s blooming once again! Is this typical behavior? I am fascinated & hopeful she will produce a keiki at some point.

Thank you for this video Danny. It's nice to sometimes get refreshers on things orchid related we have seen in your other videos and have forgotten about. Thank you for the good work you do, without your videos I would be an orchid serial killer 😅 I live in Johannesburg, South Africa, I think we might have a similar climate to Cyprus. My orchids just keep growing leaves and don't bloom. I have one orchid where the stem has over 9 rows of leaves. Ps. Love your fish keeping videos also, they are also very helpfully.
@MissOrchidGirl5 ай бұрын
Yep our climates do seem very similar! I think freesias are a common plant we both can grow outside all year long? ☺️

Hi Danny! I have a question for you: How do you handle a big old stem with repotting? Do you bury it or not? Also, I recently had three phalaenopsis recover from thrips. Since it is the growth season, should I give them high Nitrogen fertilizer or no fertilizer at all? Two of them show no signs of growth because they were severely damaged. Thank you for all your great videos!

I cut the dead roots of an orchid about 2 years ago. It hasn’t bloomed since but it is healthy and strong so I’m just letting it do its thing. I feel like I’m having to repot every year because the roots just grow out of the pot across the room 😂

Hi Danny, recently I purchased a fragrant flowershop phalaenopsis with mottled leaves. It has beautiful flowers with soft yellow color with a touch of pink. I took the risk, but it already had a terminal spike. My question is whether I should avoid buying such orchids with obvious glitches? Does it always mean it will have bad growing pattern due to its genetics? Thanks for your care tutorials :)
@zeldakasumi5 ай бұрын
For the last question, I also wonder if that flowershop Phal had a good amount of summer blooming Phalaenopsis in its parentage. I have had one from the grocery store that had leaves and spikes that looked like a winter bloomer, but its flower was fragrant and had a lot of similarities in appearance to summer bloomers, and it was only triggered to spike when my temperatures got warmer. It wasn't a sequential bloomer, because once again the spike looked like a winter blooming type, but it would only start spiking at the end of spring and bloom in summer.

Hi Dany, greatings from argentina!I have a question, maybe it's silly, but what happens if a cattleya receives temperatures much lower than the recommended ones? In my case in winter I have temperatures of 25°/28°during the day, and at night they drop to 3/4°. I clarify that I have them an indoor gallery

What are your thoughts on giving aloe vera water? I see many videos on the internet that aloe vera water will help growing many new roots. Have you experience it? I will try it out soon and I hope it works! I've got a phalaenopsis without leave but did make new flower spikes and has alot green roots. The stem is dried out/brown. Can the phalaenopsis make new leaves?

Hey, Danny! I had the weirdest thing happen! I'm still learning how to NOT kill an orchid. One of my orchids had three big leaves, but I had killed all the roots. It has ben rootless for about three months now. The leaves are pretty withered and dehydrated. And yet, a little baby leave is growing!! I swear the plant is pretty much dead, but it's still producing a leaf?! 😊

I'm repotting my mini orchid for the first time and the roots completely surround the dirt I can't even get to the dirt cause there isn't much left in there what do I do with the old roots that are all around the base of the plant

I have tried to rehydrate my Phal and repotted it and bought the repot me as it was suggested (its mostly coconut husk is what they sent me) and it still seems to be not looking healthy. The leaves looks so drooped and only two leaves left and it looks like they are about to fall off. If that happens then my plant will not have anymore leaves and i don’t know what else to do! Help!!

I really don't think there is a limit to the number of leaves on a Phalaenopsis. I have a young Phal tetraspis C1 with 3 leaves and a mature Phal Lainher Beauty Gold with 12 leaves. Most of my Phals have 6-8 leaves.

You're wrong about full water culture. It does work for some orchids, I have one that's 6 years old now and going strong.
