I bought a home with a heated 3 season porch in Ct 2 years ago , always had an interest in growing orchids but never kept them until i bought this home , my first were 2 phalenopsis purchased at Trader Joes , i still have them the leaves are huge the roots pour out of their container, this will be the 5th or 6th time they will bloom for me, i have since expanded my collection to include, 8 more phalenopsis some purchased half dead from wal mart or my local supermarket, oncidium, dendrobian, yellow bird, and a few exotics from Kalapana Orchids in Hawaii, and i can attribute 85 percent of my success to the Orchid Girl and her precise narration of keeping and caring for all types of orchids, thank you.......

Garden centers and even grocery shops often have absolutely stunning and affordable Phalaenopsis. Every other year they get a bunch of new hybrids. Nowadays there is a rise in variety and quality of the ''big lip'' Phals and ''compact multiflower'' Phals. The companies mass-producing them need eye-catching, vigorous, compact hybrids that reach blooming size fast with long-lasting flowers. Improving those traits is how they make more money, making Phalaenopsis ever easier and prettier for begginers. No shame in grabbing those. My house is full of them, they bloom alot and won't die unless a disaster like no heating in the Winter. happens.

Great video! My sister in law gave my partner an orchid for his birthday. I don't know why because he doesn't do plants. I knew I never had an orchid before and I knew I'd end up taking care of it. It's a generic orchid with white flowers. I was freaking out because of the several buds I was only able to save three. The others dried up like prunes and fell off. After watching I repotted it into a larger pot with fresh orchid soil. I've been misting because we have low humidity in the house. I must be doing something right because after being away for a week I returned to find the surviving buds bloomed! Thank you!

Hi, fertilizer is absolutely necessary for the well being of the entire orchid. It does not ‘promote’ new roots directly though and if the orchid is rootless, it is much much better to NOT use it until the new roots are a few centimeters long. Since it is not consumed it accumulates and can burn new root tips. Afterwards, when roots are able to absorb water, fertilizer is a must and it will help the entire orchid grow, including the roots 😊

First time commenter, 3 year watcher! I always refer people to your videos and refer myself to your videos and my own research when questions arise! I’ve watched A BUNCH of your videos looking for this answer, but I can’t seem to find it…I’m admittedly a little lazy on my watering (school and life interfere!) but living in Georgia, my climate is warm which has stimulated A BUNCH of arial roots over the last few years. I love them and the way they look BUT a lot of mine are in glazed ceramic hole-y pots and my roots grow out of all the nooks and crannies! So when I water them, they are at risk of being bumped and breaking. They stay alive and are silvery looking but I’m wondering if it’s okay to snip it back a little to keep them away from being constantly bumped or disturbed…which could break the already broken roots more…thoughts? I’m assuming the answer is yes (to just trim them) but I figured I could ask 😁 I love your videos, thank you so much for making becoming a good orchid grower simple!

Mi se pare un fel de pierdere ca nu mai prezinti orhideele (nu sunt sigura ca ai deja un alt format de video-uri prin care sa le vedem). Thanks for this video Danny. I still have this one mini orchid that lost its roots when I repotted it after purchase and since then has not grown any more roots, however, it has sent out some aerials. From what you discussed, I suspect my poor little orchid has run out of spaces where it actually can grow new roots. Astonishingly though, the orchid has grown two or three leaves in the meantime, ie over the last year and half, as I tried all sorts of set ups with water and dipping water and sphagnum moss, but not ever one new root growth at all and there are no snails. I now have it in a sphagnum moss bed and keep it covered with transparent foil to keep it as moist as possible, but at some point I suspect, I will have to let it go.
@MissOrchidGirl2 жыл бұрын
Hi, what you can do is, when roots are long enough, soak them in water to make them flexible and then pot the orchid, pointing the roots in the potting mix and practically potting them. If you provide enough aeration they should adapt, branch and keep growing inside the pot 😁
@teribakerreads2 жыл бұрын
@@MissOrchidGirl I tried that one, but the aerial roots that might go into soil stopped growing the moment they got in contact with solid bark. And the other one aerial root the orchid grew is the one she sneaked alongside the leaves, growing it very sneakily and very decidedly away from any medium :0)))

There is an orchid for almost every conditions. If you can find ''nobile type'' complex hybrid Dendrobiums, they tolerate temperature drops down to zero Celsius and will do fine with moderate levels of light, like a garden center Phalaenopsis. The downside is they have a ''season'' to bloom because a temperature drop is what initiate the blooming. Putting them against a window in the cold northern Winter does the job and will trigger any mature cane to produce buds ( or keikis if you over-fertilize ). Your nearest orchid society probably has group orders from producers so you can get many at a reasonable price. The best one, as far as I know, is / was Yamamoto Dendrobiums. Their complex hybrids don't need a dry rest, thus keep their leaves, and are extremely vigorous. The ''phalaenopsis type'' Dendrobiums, however, do not tolerate cool temperatures and need alot of Sun.

Hi, talking about roots, I do not have a problem with them, but I have a lot of them growing quite healthy. My question is, what do I do with them? All over the bottom of the plant 4 or 5 of them, and one of them is now so low (below the pot itself), and looks healthy. Should I just leave them? (in addition: just to mention, all the roots of my orchid are outside the plant, and the one lower than the pot itself is also growing outside the pot)

Very helpful video, Danny! Do you think a phal can bloom too much? You mentioned temperature and now I think my house might be too cold (72F/22C year round) and causing them to bloom non stop for the past 2-3 years. The spikes are almost always under the top leaf, and I’m afraid I’ll cause a terminal spike. They don’t grow very many leaves either, maybe 1 or 2 a year. Might try a cabinet to keep them warmer.
@familhagaudir8561 Жыл бұрын
I had Phals stay in bloom continuously for years without ever getting a crown spike or one dying. Still have my first garden center Phal and still love it. Should totally repot it. Laziness. It'll wait. As long as the roots are healthy and the top 3 or 4 leaves are not going limp or wrinkly, don't worry and enjoy the flowers and bragging rights. A few times I had to cut spikes and repot a long-overdue Phal that had poor roots and was dehydrating, but they all bounced back and it was my fault for waiting waaaay too long on the repotting, not due to blooming. It's normal for the lower part of a Phal. stem to degenerate and the roots there to die, and the higher part of the stem further up away from the pot either dosen't feel the humidity from the medium and dosen't make new roots, or the new roots are in the air and don't have much to drink even if you mist them every day. When that happens the Phal will very slowly lose vigor and go limp, but will bounce back after a proper repoting. If even the top leaves are limp, cut the spikes. I never had a problem putting all the air roots inside the pot when repotting, as long as there are holes in the sides for fresh air to creep in. ( Some growers say air roots put in a pot will all die in a few weeks or months. It won't happen if there is air circulating in the pot from side holes. They will actually enjoy having more humidity and water and will branch and the Phal bounce back to health very fast. )

@Nik-gc9vl2 жыл бұрын
This is two months late, but you should most definitely remove the spike since there are no flowers and the plant is focusing on putting its energy into the spike Instead of focusing its growth on growing a new root system. That will probably be your best for recovery, if you try to promote another flowering it will take even more energy away from developing new roots.

The issue is all of a sudden she drooped. I knew something was wrong. Well it was thirsty I forgot bc the heats now on that this is going to get thirsty more often. So I added water. However I watched your video on rejuvenation. Um I have one good root the other is hard but a brown soft spot in-between. I'm pretty attached and don't generally kill plants. What can I do?

I repotted a newly purchased Phalaenopsis from moss to lecca in a self-watering kit. The nutrient solution is always wicking to the roots in this system. Is this self -watering good for orchids?

I’m not a fan of leca type self watering for orchids. They seem to just barely hang on and were never vigorous for me. MissOrchidGirl had used it in the past too, but has since switched to bark and sphagnum moss.

@@chemenginecat3940 Thanks. Might switch back to moss again.

I also used lecca and did not like it, it seemed to me it extracted moisture out of roots when they dry. That seemed to affect roots and even desecate them.

Hi, I have 6 orchids but only 2 of them haven't bloom for 2 years any suggestions?
@VioletaGherman2 жыл бұрын
Hope you are able to find the issue. The reasons can be so many, first look at what is different - type, size, location, temperature, light. List I can think of: pests (I had thrips), not enough leafs (phalenopsis shoot flower spikes from leaf 4 ussualy), not enough roots, not enough fertilizer.

Should I cut the roots off the plant. Will still live if I did .
@MissOrchidGirl2 жыл бұрын
Hi, if they’re not dead then you shouldn’t cut them. If you do it may survive, or it may not 🤷🏻♀️

I have an orchid that has lots of good roots but I’m down to a small pitiful leaf! When the leaf dies is the plant dead?
