After I got a few air plants, my phalanopsis orchid started putting out LOTS of aerial roots (coincidentally, no connection with the acquiring of air plants.) When I investigated, I found that the orchid's covered roots had died, so I just cut it loose and began taking care of it the same way I take care of my air plants. It is doing very well with a weekly soak in water, (monthly addition of orchid fertilizer) air dry on a towel and then set back into its substrate-less container (a strawberry planter) hovering over about an inch of water for humidity. I am really thinking that this may be the best way to keep a phalanopsis. I'd love to see some videos on creatively keeping phalanopsis as an air plant.

I never thought about having air pockets to allow root growth... seems so logical. Sometimes the Phal roots are so thick they fail to penetrate the medium. One thing I notice is that in super high humidity in a pot, root hairs will form. It gives a substantial increase in surface are to absorb water / nutrients. Untested theory, but I think the root hair structure is also what causes the root to stick to and anchor itself to porous surfaces.

Orchid air roots definitely do grow towards water. Try growing your orchids in a kitchen or bathroom. The roots will grow toward the sink, whether or not there is a window in that direction.

I have 2 old orchids with aerial roots growing absolutely everywhere. I have one with roughly 15 growing in all directions, the other has more than 20 (I reached 20 when I counted, then lost track). 😆 The one with the most roots, they're growin up, down, around, they branch out and they just keep growing! The one with a little less root isn't as crazy, it doesn't have as many branching roots and they are not nearly as long but it's still a lot and they do grow a lot too. I think it's been 2-3 years since they were last repotted but they're both doing great.

I just got a new orchid and was replanting it and noticed that it seems to have some type of sponge around the center (bulb) under the leaves. Should I leave it? Its really stuck to the plant, but, also seams to the really wet and like it might cause rot. Another orchid I have (Dendrobium phalaenopsis orchid ) that lost all its roots before I could re-plant it has been rootless but living for over 6 months, should I be doing anything different to encourage root growth?

The double color of the root, green and red as you called it, is because of excess light exposure. It's a defense mechanism plant uses to counteract the excess received sunlight by converting some of its green pigment into reddish that are not responsible for photosynthesis.

I love your videos! A friend gave me 2 potted orchids. I dont know if they are in degraded bark/moss or if its potting soil. They had/have no blooms or spikes and no air roots. Ive been watering them for months and while they seem to be doing ok, there has been no change in their growing. No new follage or air roots. I learned from your videos that they should be in bark or moss and plan to repot them tomorrow. All this being said, I dont know what type of orchid they are so I dont know what care they need. I didnt even know there was more than 1 kind of orchid! These were house warming gift for my moving to Houston, Texas. I want to take PROPER care of them and see their pretty blooms, can you help me identify them please? Thank you!

Hi Danni.....JUST LOVE YOUR CHANNEL !!! I am fairly NEW to orchids .....I have had my first encounter with trial and error ) :((((. ......anyhow no use crying over split milk as they say u live and learn in this area ........any area too in life in general......any how with baby orchids after planting them OFF The mother plant and into their own home after the 3 seconds of initial watering you just leave them for a 1-2 month period before watering again ?? And just harden them off as you say.....?? Just would like to know when you can water them again and start fertizling them SLOWLY ......when would you start and HOW do you know when to start will you see MORE roots in the container ....I have a keiki .....which grew OUT of medium and totally in the AIR before planting it in it's own home.....3 inch wide by maybe 2 inch high net pot with A LOT of holes for air ventilation.......I also have a sickly orchid too again trail and error BUT the leaves are still amazing green and it has a flower spike NO flowers as it only had ONE root I could save I sprayed hydrogen peroxide in water on it before I repotted it. Both the baby and the sick plant are in the same containers VERY small ones for now like what repotme.com has those net pots VERY small ones. LOVE their supplies.

Hi, I am not a ‘green thumb’ at all however I received a phal orchid gift and managed to keep it going through two bloomings. Yay!!! Now I think I’m hooked which brings me to my present dilemma. I rescued a phal orchid from a doctor’s surgery. I felt so sorry for it as nobody had time to water it. They told me I could take it and try to revive it. I took it, cut off the absolutely dried out spikes and repotted it according to your instructions. 😬 My question is, assuming I’ve done it properly how long before I know wether I’ve killed it 😞 or saved it. ☺️

Hi Dani! I see some dark spots on the second orchid you handle on the video, I think it is a violacea. Do you know what they are? My Bellina came with very similar black spots. Thank you!
@beyondthesea18
@beyondthesea18 4 жыл бұрын
Orchids can naturally have dark spots that are just from pigmentation, especially on younger leaves or orchids that have darker flowers. It can also happen on light colored orchids as a reaction to higher light living situations - I have a white phalaenopsis which has these little pigmentation spots because it's growing next to a bright east window right now, but it's very happy there so the spots don't concern me, even when they're on its keiki's leaves. I wouldn't worry too much unless it looks like it's spreading aggressively, so just keep an eye on it. It's normal!

Hello, so I have three phals and I just learned about your Vids so I have some potting soil and the right pots on order. M question is I have some pretty unruly roots that go everywhere. Should I jsut leave them alone or is there a way to trim them back? Also I actually have an entirely new orchid plant (roots, leaves, and even a flower shoot) growing off of an existing flower shoot. What should I do about this?

Hi, I got an orchid as a gift and I had no clue what to do with it. It was in this teeny plastic pot with moss type medium and it didn't look so good so I took it out of there. I messed around with my own mix and re-potted it. (mistake obviously lol) The blooms fell off and the spike turned black and had to cut it off because I didn't want the entire plant to die out. Luckily, I found your channel and started to learn a little more about this unique plant. I got orchid potting medium, rinsed the roots out a bit (got green almost right away), and placed her in her new home. Its been about 3 months, she's still kickin' but she doesn't have a spike, barely has a stem and doesn't look like she's growing at all. What should I do with her? I don't want to give up on her. Thank you for the instructional videos! :)

Danni, I must say that you are very inspiring when it comes to your hobby of growing orchids. So much so, I have phalenopsis now in my home. I do have a question that I want you to answer for me. My first orchid developed so many blooms that one actually snapped off. It was quite heavy as it bloomed nineteen blooms on one flower spike and twenty one, plus two buds. The one that had nineteen blooms was the one that snapped. I was washing some dishes at the sink, admiring my beautiful orchids, and the one that had the nineteen blooms snapped just above the first bloom on the spike. Did I do something wrong, or is it sometimes normal with heavy blooming that you have to support them more.? I indeed was heartbroken when it snapped off, leaving only one bloom. The other one now has twenty two blooms, and is supported by a skewer carefully taped to the support rod, and clipped with the growing cascade. I'm not taking any chances with that one. It may sound silly, but I named her Henrietta. The second one I purchased last Friday,, and she is in beautiful bloom. Currently there are two flower spikes, and one has several blossoms yet to burst into beauty. Solid purple Phaleneopsis BTW her name is Mary Beth. I had never considered growing Orchids before, but they are such a fun hobby I found out. I wanted to ask if I had done anything wrong with the cascade snapping on its own. Love your channel, and will continue to watch as my beautiful Orchids bloom. Thanks a million.

A thing I've noticed with phal roots is that, once they decide to stop growing, there's no way to make them change their mind 😅 For example, if I go on holiday for two days and leave the orchids in the dark, the roots will slooooowly stop growing over a period of weeks until the growing tip disappears completely, only then they will start growing again.

interesting. i recently got new phals from a nursery and noticed that the tips have stopped growing and velamen taking over the tip. so I guess the roots have stopped growing and they'll start to grow back once the tips are completely covered with velamen?

Hi Danny. I was about to say scientific also and see some one else already ... Question related and none related, wonder if you thought of cutting the stem when the phal becomes too tall and the lower leaves dries up. If there is many arial roots on the stem, could those serve as the media roots after cutting stem ? Was there an grande old phal you've tried to rejuvenate ?

I was given a Phal that bloomed for 8 months for me , then began to die back . I snipped the blossom stalk back , new leaves are growing nicely . I did an expirament where I'm covering over the top of the medium & dead aerial roots with banana peels and now healthy aerial roots are sprouting ! I live in Phoenix, in the heat & my plant resides in a western window ... this is a fun expirament to do but WHY is my orchid growing aerial roots only after being covered by banana peels ? Any ideas or answers ?

Mine phal isn't looking happy and the areal roots seemed to be dying. Imagine my shock to lift out the roots and see the ends were completely white as snow. I was planning to severe them but as they're in an opaque pot I think I will leave them be. Thank you!

would a tabletop humidifier be too much for an orchid? I'm new to them and am so afraid of rotting it out, I've already made mistakes...

Is window light ok, or artificial light better for Orchids? I have just started my collection, so I’m learning a lot about them. I know I’m learning, but I would hate to lose them. I’m anxious for summer, I live in Texas, and it’s cold. Thank you for all your knowledge and advice on these beautiful flowers.💐

Hi Dani! LOVE your videos. Question, I am trying to revive a phal that had no roots AT ALL. So, ive been following your advice and sort of adding my own. It start to sprout roots? It almost looks like a Keiki and not a root. Do you have a video about Keikis? Thanks❤

Hi, i don't know if anybody can help but i just bought a new orchid and while repotting it i noticed that the roots had sort of little brown lines or wring all over them.. 🤔 Should i worry about it or is it some sort of pigmentation?

This information is from my extensive orchid-care-video watching spree, so it's not personal experienxce but I think it's from over fertilizing the orchid. (If it has what looks kind of like burned spots on the roots. ) orchids need very little fertilizer apparently, and shouldn't be given too much. As far as care goes... just watch how much fertilizer you give it yourself, and there should be no new spots. (Is what the video promised anyway, I have a problem with dehydration with my own orchid so I have been watching a lot of videos :') )
