I think after Nirvana was over, a lot of people dismissed many bands that may have reminded them a bit of Nirvana. In doing that, some bands may have not gotten the respect they deserved. Silverchair is probably one of them. This show totally rocks and holds up well after all these years. Could you imagine being 15/16 years old and playing kick a$$ rock n roll in front of a crowd like this. It had to be crazy for them

This expresses exactly how I feel about them. These kids ooze this music out of their souls, esp., to me Daniel. I don't think he could not play music at this point. Like breathing for the rest of us. And, yes. They are good. Really good. It would suck to be dismissed, compared and relegated to a copy when you're just bringing out what you are as a musician.

I saw Cage The Elephant put on a show in Ottawa around 2011. It was really early in the afternoon. I dont think me or anyone else there even knew who they were. After the show I think we were all big fans. I swore I had that same feeling I saw Nirvana live.

I once said that anyone who has ever been obsessively into silverchair is mentally ill. I stand behind that statement, but not in a derogatory way. I think Daniel Johns is able to capture the earnest struggles of youth in such a powerful way. Though I may not be as obsessed as I was when I was at my lowest, I will always love and appreciate their music. Daniel is a huge reason for my having the courage to start speaking to the people in my life about my mental health and going to therapy. I feel better today than I have in a long time. I love silverchair and always will. Thank you, Daniel, for speaking to me in a way that few artists will

Lets be honest, as much as many fans preferring this era and earlier, the band Silverchair mk1was built on angst. So after one learns to cope in life (maturity). You can't blame the guy for not wanting to mimic, fake angst or rehash the same formula. Neon Ballroom was a beautiful compromise before the transition into Silverchair mk2 the "we can actually write, sing and play our instruments" unlike a lot of repeat the formula bands of that era. Alas bittersweet but undeniably one of the greats :)

Maybe because people felt the same angst. Music is also about expression and is the reason why Nirvana became so big, maybe holding that angst in is what sent him on his path of what he has been on for years along with his medical issues. This comment could be excused if it was many years ago but seriously at what level has Daniel learnt to cope with the life of success dictated by record companies. Music is another victim of commercialisation and the promise of the good life, only very few have the choice to do what they want with music and be successful. I don't know Daniel but to call it fake angst is total BS

The simplicity is what makes albums like Frogstomp and Freak Show so great. I still rock out to all these tunes on my guitar. Lyrically a very intelligent album for a man of Daniel's age. Old soul on young shoulders.
@serpserpserp
@serpserpserp Ай бұрын
I remember talking to an A&R guy from Sony when Freak Show was played and when they first heard it some people questioned if the Silverchair guys played all the stuff on the album. A lot of people couldn't believe that after Frog Stomp they would deliver something a step up in technicality (for its day, and for their age). Now it seems simple, but for a bunch of kids, Freak Show was a pretty big achievement. Then they went on to do some technically incredible albums. They are great musicians.
@Oltgere
@Oltgere Ай бұрын
@@serpserpserp I couldn’t agree more. Their work got much more technical and sophisticated in a very short span of time. But I did stop listening after Diorama. Even at the time of its release you could sense this was a sort of peak for Silverchair. And tbh, it would have been a perfect album to bow out to, as a band. They lost their touch a bit after that, and it all had run its course, the chemistry was gone.

I saw them when they came to Seattle in the late 90's. If you haven't heard the 5 part podcast Daniel did it's really worth a listen. Although it saddened me to hear all the crazy stories of obsessed groupies and older women who sent him inappropriate letters and traumatized him as a very young teen. It most certainly caused the anorexia he developed. I'm sorry that you had to deal with so much crazy as a young teen Daniel. I'm glad you seem to be in a much better place now. I'm not going to say better, because each individual band has their place, and I love them for that. But I can't say Silverchair is my favorite. They are too normal and generic for me to say "favorite"...they're just not unique enough to me. But...I freaking love them though!

Honestly, most of the dislikes probably come from people that were around at this time and just had an unwarranted hate for Silverchair. Maybe they thought they were ripping off Nirvana, or were just overrated in general. I see that a lot on videos of '90s bands. "These guys just wanna be Nirvana" or "These guys are ripping off Pearl Jam" or "God, grunge music is so awful. Don't know why anyone would listen to this garbage. '80s Hair Metal for life!!!" It's almost always older guys that grew up with '70s or '80s music.
