Lavendaire I'm a 16 year old girl who is going through life trying to figure out the kind of person I am and who I want to be. Throughout this year my teachers have taught me a lot, especially my english teacher, aboit things that are important to consider when you go about life. I don't quite know how to clearly explain it but I'm learning from them and you about the real world and becoming a leader. I've learned from you and them about how to be successful in life. To be honest, when you get interns you actually NEED to explain them what to do and what is expected of them. Even if that is just "Get moving, communicate with others etc." because nobody I know of is capable of reading other people's minds:) So it is totally understandable that you had no idea what to do.

I agree. Coddling or hand holding isn't needed (or recommended) but at the very least she should have been told the basics. It's probably easier to have a ten minute conversation about basic expectations than it is to hire, fire and rehire an intern.

Yep. No one should expect you to come in knowing everything that's expecting of you. Sure, you're probably meant to figure it out, when it's your first job/internship, good luck approaching your superior to ask what you're meant to do. It's scary.

Margarita Muradova Agreed, the only "mistake" in this situation is that because she was shy she didn't ask around to know the job and the place better which is something alot of people naturally do, but if u're intimidated, shy, fresh etc how would u know what they expect from you if u're not told, duh. Honestly, before firing an 18 y.o. intern on their first job, it would have been more appropriate to give you feed-back first and see if you could improve based on that. Expecting an 18 y.o. to take initiatives when you have not expressed your expectations first hand is a bit ridiculous. It's just bad management.

Marie Helene D yeah I think the same too. The one whom u report to should also be asking about ur progress and feedback first. They should let u know what are the things u can do or not. Especially interns will not have authority and know what to do. It seemed not that right have too much expectations from someone so new to a job. 😐

I guess firing her immediately was a bit harsh, but she was right that interns should make the initiative to atleast ask what to do. It's common that supervisors are super busy and interns are sometimes the least of their concerns. Employers always prefer assertive over book smart employees.

You cannot imagine how uplifting it was to hear your stories of failure. I’ve had a huge fear of failure for as long as I can remember and coping with failure the last year has been really difficult. It’s nice knowing you can come out of it a wiser person.

Man, that being late thing, that’s real. I went through the same thing where I somewhat got conditioned to believe that being late was normal. Not only is that not cool to others, but it adds so much unnecessary stress and anxiety to your life! It really takes a toll! But just shifting my mindset to leaving about half an hour before I think I need to has really made a difference in my life :)

That internship you talked about at the beginning ... I blame them. First of all you should have been told on day one that there may be down time and when there is that is your opportunity to pick up hangers etc and go around and see what needs to be done. Also someone could have had the decency ( like the super or whoever was in higher rank of you ) to pull you aside and say hey .. I noticed you on computer browsing etc can you help with this etc. you would of gotten the hang of your responsibilities soon. That was poor management fir that company to get interns but not be upfront about expectations on your first day.

Christina Alexander In Switzerland we do not tell interns what to do. They are shown the basics naturally but we expect people here to use your own instinct and see what needs to be done. We do not bottlefeed people here. But our young interns here fit in well and all speak a few languages and and have good computer skills. Also our schooling system is really good. Whereas in USA it is another story also where students are shot. Horror of horrors.

Yeah, it was a weird situation bc the person who hired me & was supposed to manage me left on maternity leave right when I started the job, so someone else had to take me under their wing -- yet that person was super busy & not expecting an intern -- and eventually it was another woman in the dept (who I never worked with directly) who fired me lol. Was kind of a mess. But I'm happy I learned a valuable lesson!

When you started to talk about living for yourself I felt that, I’m 20 turning 21 this year and realized these last 5 years I’ve been living to please others. I finally decided to do what I want and moved States and started a new life for me and all my choices. Thank you for this video, I don’t regret this decision :)

She did not say that the company made a mistake. She said that she maid a mistake by not taking initiative and stepping up to the role. So I think its ok for her to consider it as a "mistake" in her life.

yeah I still think I could have done better in that role though, but I learned from it! there were also other issues like, the person who hired me & was supposed to manage me left on maternity leave right after I started working, leaving me under the supervision of other people who didn't know me or were prepared for the job (they were busy with other things). just an awkward situation but all is well :)

I really appreciate your honesty on sharing these stories. With the internship, I personally believe that is a big problem with the education system. School teaches us to always just do as we're told, and discourages being independent thinkers using our initiative. This is something I learnt in my early twenties too, and something that I (and many others I know) have really had to work on. I wish that school prepared people for the 'real world' more, and encouraged things such as thinking outside the box, having our own opinions, and the freedom to do things in the way we learn best. Before becoming a mum I worked with young children, and it starts from such a young age. It's lovely to see how much you have grown.

what you said about your internship is exactly what happened to me in the last 1,5 year in nursing school. i've been in 3 different places, each one very different from the other (wards, type of patients and conditions and all that) so it was hard to understand what i could and had to do in each place. i was so shy and afraid of asking stupid questions or saying/doing the wrong things. they couldn't fire me but i knew they weren't happy with me. it was awful but i think this made me understand a couple of things about me and made me grow. thank you so much for sharing your story, i feel so much better now because i know i'm not alone

I relate a lot to what you say about living in the future. I kind of still do it, but to a much lesser degree and if anything it makes me excited. It used to cause severe anxiety, but your videos helped a ton to figure out what I want for myself :) To anyone who might be struggling with finding their "thing": it took me a year of active soul-searching. I am currently 20 turning 21 in a few months, and I find myself doing almost all the things you've mentioned in this video. The overthinking about the future, being unsatisfied with where I am now, the way I'm just breezing through life like a zombie and not living in the moment, and ESPECIALLY the always late thing. I am always late for work, I keep complaining about life, thinking that this is not for me, that there is something better out there for me, and that I should be somewhere doing something other than what I'm doing now. Because of this, I'm growing more and more inconsistent with everything. I lose focus and motivation to even get up early to go to work. If I'm not late, I'm absent or I just don't get work done on time. And as positive and grateful I am for everything (like landing a job not long after I graduated college), all my thoughts boil down to the fact that this work is something I don't care for. When I imagine my ideal work, I imagine myself drawing and making art, not at a desk with a stack of papers that needs to be done, and working through them like a robot or something. Sorry for the long rant, but thanks for the video anyway. It makes me feel somehow at ease knowing that I'm not the only one with these problems and that it's okay to have them :)

I just graduated college and 2 months ago, I played the lead role in a musical at a prominent theatre company. I accidentally overslept and completely missed my morning show. I had no understudies. I didn't get fired, but this was a huge lesson for me, especially since I've been late my whole life. I was so embarrassed and ashamed of myself because I had let everyone down! This is why communication is so important. Some managers do not know how to communicate, they just fire people instead of helping them to understand what the job is. At my job too, I just sit at the desk and answer the phone. I always ask them if they need me to do anything because I so not want to feel bored and I don't want the co-workers to say I'm not doing anything.

Be on time, respect other people’s time such as yours 4. Don’t rely on other’s approval, value yourself just as you are and live for yourself 5. Every failure/mistake it’s a lesson for you to improve It's natural making mistakes, everyone makes them at different levels, it's part of being human after all, but the importance relies on overcoming, at least that's what I think. And I am so hard with myself and "bit myself down" for mistakes that I made and sometimes I think I could be better in life but because of those mistakes I am not where I would like to be. The truth is that, all those things helped me to understand what was important to me. It is also true that when I started to live for myself (no for others - I helped so many people to be their best that I neglected myself - or what they expect from me) and I took more control over my life, I got better. I got to be more aware of what I want, and be accountable for myself, my success and my mistakes. I am still learning but I am confident that everything will be alright. Wow, the first story made me so angry, cause i had a very similar situation and i felt so bad afterwards. Like "why did i not take initiatives, how could this happen, what is wrong with me?!" It took me years to get over this and realise, that it just wasn't my fault! If you employ young people, coming straight from school, knowing nothing about how a business works, and of course nothing about what they are allowed to to, you have to tell them!! It makes me so angry, cause i felt so insecure and bad. Any leader who reads this, please, encourage your young empoyees, tell them exactly how to act, show them their possibilities, what you would be glad about, how they can improve, etc! It might be perfectly logical for you, but it just ain't for them!! And to any young employee: Don't get insecure, talk to your boss openly and ask them everything..! Lots of love to everyone.

Oh man, your internship story reminds me so much of my own job story. In 2017, I was still in University, preparing to go to a semester abroad. I was really broke and had a job I hated and really broke me down emotionally. I found a much better job by accident, I didn’t even fit most of the criteria (they didn’t want somebody without a BA and needed a part-timer, not a student worker), but I applied anyway and they gave me a shot! I loved the job but it was hard - I worked 4 times in addition to school, but it made me really happy. My boss was extremely demanding and for a while, I loved that and idolized her. But I started to see that she, being a complete workaholic, always putting work before anything, including her own mom‘s death, also expected me to put work before everything, including my mental and physical health, family, school...End of the story: I got fired after I took one day off when a family member died. Apparently I didn’t show enough „dedication“. If I learned anything from the experience, it’s that I don’t have to be afraid of hurdles that seem too high and just to try it. And that, even though I feel like I’m a workaholic too, I will never put work before my health and people I love anymore.

being late all the time.. I feel you!! its take a lot of time and practice to fix that, it is an habit that you had and you have to unlearn it! I think its pretty common to live for our parents or others expectations when we are young, its because we were raised to be like that.. once we start to develop our personality we can be more confident to make our choices :) thank you for sharing, I relate to a lot of them.
