I lost a very close friend to brain cancer last year. Some weeks before his passing, he put me in charge of the music at his funeral, and he requested only one song: Bro Hymn! I thought it was a bit unfit for a funeral, so I found an acoustic cover to play during the service. At some point, I had remorse... He requested the original, not a pale copy. I added the song to the lineup at the last minute to be played at the end of the ceremony. And the rest is history (to me), every one of his friend raised up to sing the choruses. For a brief three minutes, we were teen again and Bill was still with us. That how powerful this simple riff is!

Bro Hymn means a lot to me. I saw Pennywise several times in the 90s, originally when Thirsk was alive and later after he had passed. My brother was with me for many of those shows. That same brother of mine unfortunately passed away more than a decade ago. Fast forward to 2024 and I saw Pennywise live for the first time in over 20 years. In the context of losing my brother and a few others close to me over the years, Bro Hymn had taken on a completely new meaning that I didn't fully understand as a teenager. It was bittersweet, but incredible. When it is performed live, it's not just Pennywise playing the song, the entire crowd is involved. It's truly an experience.

This is the traditional closer for Pennywise shows and has been for...well, forever. The crowd knows it and waits for it and knows to make sure, no matter how much they put into the rest of the show, to always save energy for the finale and "Bro Hymn". If you can find a live version, you will see a completely different energy. Though the updated version recorded for the Full Circle album also includes Jason's brother Justin Thirsk from the band 98 Mute.

I was 14 years old the first time i saw Pennywise in Torrance California. I'm now 44 and will be seeing them next month with NOFX. I was 14 at my first PW show too. I'm 35 and grew up in south Florida. Stretch Arm Strong, Madd Caddies and Pennywise at Ovation in Boynton Beach. It was the first real show that I was allowed to go to by myself but my friends dad bought a ticket and stood at the bar lol. There isn't a single bass line that can get me tearing up like this one. When I was stationed in Korea as a 20-something, we had a little rock band that played at a little bar in the vil in Waegwan. We would end our 'shows' with this song. The energy, the message, the gang vocals at the end...it was always such a powerful moment. I still get misty when I hear the opening drive from the baseline. Trust me, there is nothing like being in the pit during the song. Everyone coming together to sign this song (crowd chant). Gives me goosebumps everytime I see them live. Yes, it is used in sports. Jacksonville Jaguars used it for touchdown scores at home games. It's equally cool as hell getting the whole crowd doing the chant.

I think you should check out some lesser known and even more technical punk bands like, Fair Do's, Almeida, Action Men, Darko (UK), Much The Same (their track Skeletons is a bassline to behold), Belvedere and Straighten Things Out (bassist from that band had an injured left hand so fretted everything the opposite way and his basslines may as well be sorcery).

About 25 years ago, during my college years, some friends and I took a road trip to spend 4th of July in Manhattan Beach, CA (the hometown of one of the friends). On the afternoon of the 4th, after sharing several drinks with some locals, we walked along the ocean to the next town over, Hermosa Beach, where we watched Pennywise play live from the front porch of a house to a cul-de-sac full of surfers, skaters, and punks. I will never forget the pure joy I felt when they closed their set with Bro Hymn while I jumped around arm-in-arm with my friends, all of us screaming the lyrics at the top of our lungs.

Grew up listening to Bro hymn tribute either in my Dad's van or his Stereo Room. He always made sure to listen to the hidden track which is a piano melody written by Jason. It always hits hard. I'm from Brazil an this is a real Anthem in South America. You'll listen this song from amateur bands playing for fun in small punk festivals, not only in big cities but all over the country and also in Argentina, Chile, Colombia etc

Always a great song, I’ve been lucky enough to hear it live several times. At a show in Sydney that Pennywise played with the Bronx I was basically standing next to Byron the drummer for the entire show, the Guy is an animal. This is the kind of song that the crowd starts singing before the band even starts playing it. It’s spin tingling. Also, the band puts the chorus into double time after the last chorus and gives it a full punk rock Gallup. It’s great for a circle pit.

An absolute classic! I saw Pennywise twice this year and both times they had the openers come join them on stage and the bassist play along to the song. An absolutely iconic punk bass line!

If you were ever in Savannah Ga 2004-2008ish on a late Friday and Saturday night you would have heard an entire bar doing the crowd chant and it filled all of city market with this song.

Song is about 3 of our friends lost while growing up. 2 were my best friends, and roommates, and it hurts every time i hear this song. Also Jason was A GOOD FRIEND!

I remember this from the early 90s and have thought as punk songs go this was probably the best and most well written song. It’s stands out and still brings emotions from the past. Lost close friends and used to cover this in punk bands dedicating it to those guys and gals. Man such a great song.
