Pittsburgh 1996, I went with some friends to see Bad Religion and a band I never heard called Goldfinger was opening. We got there and the show was sold out so we walked around trying to find tickets. A friend recognized John Feldman as he was on his way into the venue. We told him our dilemma and asked if he had any ins and that we were willing to pay. He told us to wait outside. A few minutes later a guy came out asking for the guys who were talking to John and then he let us in backstage. We watched half of Goldfinger's set from side stage (standing next to Jay Bentley, bassist for Bad Religion) until someone kicked us out into the crowd. I saw John later at a college Ska Festival (Skalloween @ Edinborough University of Pennsylvania) and thanked him for that first introduction and told him I had become a huge fan since then. He was very gracious.

11:37 Goldfinger is a ska-punk band and arguably ultimately more of a pop punk band than a ska band. But that’s kind of what half of the 3rd Wave Ska movement was like anyway, with bands like Less Than Jake, The Aquabats, and Slapstick on the poppy punk side and bands like Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Suicide Machines, and VooDoo Glow Skulls on the hardcore punk side. You also had punk bands from Rancid to NOFX incorporating a lot of ska and reggae in their punk songs. There was no shortage of upbeat ska breakdowns or intros in 90s punk. Of course there was plenty of straight ska in that era too like Skankin Pickle, Slackers, Hepcat, or The Hippos, but the punk intensity with ska flair is what makes the era standout most from No Doubt to Dance Hall Crashers. It was also parallel to “alternative” music so you had a lot of ska bands experimenting with incorporating different styles like swing and jazz like Squirrel Nut Zippers. 3rd wave was Ska, Core, the Devil and more.

While I believe Mike Herrera’s joining the band has lit a new fire under Feldman, I think Simon was the best bass player the band had. @peteryang50568 ай бұрын
John Feldmann has become known more as a producer than a musician these days, but he's always been a really sharp songwriter who has a great, intuitive sense of dynamics and musicality. Not to mention tons of energy to spare as a frontman - if you watch recent Goldfinger performances, he's still got the same manic energy, albeit more in dad-bod form these days. He did a great pair of interviews on Chris Demakes's podcast about Goldfinger's two biggest hits (including this one) where they dive deep into each song line-by-line. They specifically mention the way "Here in Your Bedroom" winds repeatedly through those key changes, as well as the incredibly high-tuned snares on these tracks, which was a signature of 90s ska punk records (and part of why ska punk records from the 2000s don't usually have quite the same splashy flair). Anyway, as others have mentioned, if you want to hear Goldfinger on their more ska-oriented side, "Superman" is their other big hit and is more groovy and horn-infused than "Here in Your Bedroom." Both great tunes! Edited to add: Hope you stay on the ska train! One reaction that I think would be a ton of fun would be to react to something off Jeff Rosenstock's "Ska Dream" album, which was a ska re-recording of his acclaimed indie/punk album "No Dream." In particular, it'd be cool to see you react to the same song off both records, as I think "Ska Dream" is an absolutely brilliant exercise in (re-)arrangement and reinterpretation. Maybe something like comparing "Scram!" vs "Skram!" or "***BNB" vs "***SKA."

During the ska-punk explosion of the mid 90's... Goldfinger was seen as niche within a niche burgeoning genre in the mainstream. They typically are more of a punk pop band than a ska band, but they were more "ska" adjacent in the mid 90s but as they went on, it was clear to fans they were better at punk. This is one of my fave Goldfinger songs because it bridged their strengths perfectly, it's sitll more of a punk song than a ska one but it still speaks to what made them unique to other ska-punk groups blowing up who were more poppier imo. Goldfinger does not have a dedicated in-band horn section... they mainly played punk as I said, and hired friends to perform horns with them on tour or on records.
