I also loved Roger Moore's Simon "the Saint" Templar. Superheroes have a long pedigree, from the mythic heroes of ancient times to characters such as the Scarlet Pimpernel to pulp stories about Zorro, the Spider, the Shadow, and many others. We finally have the technology to do these characters justice. Costumes allow them to look properly super, more like their depictions on the page, than like gymnasts or cheerleaders, and the props and sets look decent rather than bargain-basement. But, when it comes to these Italian cash-ins, the intent was to make them as cheaply and quickly as possible.

Why is it that pretty much ALL Italian superheroes in movies all 1. dress in the same one piece, black, spandex, outfit, 2. All seem to be the exact same character who's a millionair, with gadgets, and hot women, and 3. Complete jerks, are horrible to women, and pretty much kill people more than the villains, or by today's standards ARE the villains??? Was the concept of "Hero" or "Superhero" completely LOST on the Italian movie makers or Italian culture at the time?
@julietfischer50566 ай бұрын
You're missing the ones with the red spandex and black gloves, briefs, boots, and masks (_Superargo_ and the _Three Fantastic Supermen_ movies). Cashing in on what's popular. When _Mad Max_ became a hit, a lot of studios churned out post-apocalypse wasteland movies, such as _Rats: Night of Terror,_ which this channel covered. Spy movies in the mold of James Bond. Westerns. Many with plot holes you could drive a bus through.

Italy lost the war, the postwar Italian pop culture was filled with antiheroes, thieves, criminals, characters that were outsiders operating against the law and order and the audiences responded to that, in comics, giallo novels and movies and even in the Italian version of the All American Western, Clint Eastwood's man with no name was not a typical american western hero at the time. The first succesful comic book costumed hero was Diabolik dressed all in black and inspired mostly by the Phantom, after him, everybody jumped in that bandwagon called Fumetti Nero, black comic.

Outside of the already mentioned Danger Diabolik Italy had quite a bit of costumed thieves turned vigilantes. Both ARGOMAN and FLASHMAN would be considered traditional superheroes if not for their pesky hobbies of stealing priceless artifacts, and they don't steal for profit but for the fun of it, sometimes even returning the stolen items. And of course we can't discount THE THREE FANTASTIC SUPERMEN film series, about an FBI agent infiltrating and then coercing a gang of costumed crooks into working for the FBI. At least the first film is worth a watch and it combines James Bond style espionage antics with the 60s campy Batman action.

I'm not entirely sure he qualifies in this particular context, but I'll go ahead & nominate "Tom Ripley" a.k.a THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY. Rarely has an essentially amoral murderer & con artist been rendered so likable, so personable, so good-intentioned---and, well, so perversely sympathetic. Matt Damon's Ripley (TALENTED) has very well-deservedly garnered the most attention & the most praise, but I'll contend that it's more than equally matched by John Malkovich's portrayal in RIPLEY'S GAME. Then there's Dennis Hopper's interesting take on the character in Wim Wender's THE AMERICAN FRIEND. Oh...and Alain Delon was no slouch either in the Rene Clement classic adaptation PURPLE NOON. Here's something else: if you watched & really enjoyed any or all of the screen treatments then you owe to yourself to read Patricia Highsmith's Tom Ripley trilogy, because the source novels---as good works of literature will often do---introduce new levels of insight into an enigmatical & complex anti-hero. Besides which, Highsmith was one of the finest female writers of psychologically astute crime fiction. (Go chew on that, Daphne Du Maurier. And you too, Patricia Cornwall.)

I don't know if this is in the right category, but there's a western comedy called WATERHOLE # 3, where the outlaw main character commits a rape, and at the end of the story beats a dozen people out of buried treasure, including the girl herself (who's out to get even with him). It somehow never became that controversial to audiences, maybe because they cast James Coburn in the role, and he often played characters who COULD get away with things like that.
