Is schmodder a technical term? I never heard that one. To freshly greased clicks! 🍻
@misterpatina4 ай бұрын
Haha, no it isn’t. There’s basically no translation, but I’d say 'gunk' is pretty close. You can use 'schmodder' for everything slimy, greasy, sticky and you always want to get rid of it 😅

Fun fact: In nuclear engineering CRUD is a technical term. The engineers at Chalk River Nuclear Plant in Ontario, Canada found deposits in the main cooling system early in the operation of the reactor. They published a paper on Chalk River Unidentified Deposits (CRUD). Of course the nature of these deposits was fairly quickly determined (various metals leached from the piping by high pressure radioactive water) but the deposits are still called CRUD.

The device isn't named "widow". Wilhelm Göhler's widow took over his business after his death in 1890 and changed the company's name to reflect the change in ownership (as may have been required by law in Freiburg at the time). Even in medieval times the widow of a guildsman could take her husband's place.

With your dedication to restoring those lovely screws and pins, I have to ask... What was the reason for not doing much with the long one with the wing nut? The threads are quite bare in the lower half, and though not critical I thought you might take a scratch pass to make sure they hadn't gotten too rounded. Did the customer ask that one remain as-is beyond a cleaning and refinishing?
@misterpatina2 ай бұрын
I feel you here - it was hard to see, but the thread was slightly conical and, that way - original like that. It was just supposed to be screwed in the last 5-6 thread gears

fun fact. heat does not expand steel. It contracts it. That's why, on skyscrapers, they put red hot bolts in because when they cool they expand and tighten the joint. For your case, removing screws, heating the metal causes the screw to shrink away from the channel, and the channel to shrink away from the screw.
