What’s a good name for the cannon? Oh and (most important) it weighs 965 grams (2,1 pounds / 34 ounces) 😅

Wad goes in before the ball. Put in powder, then wad, then ball and compact it with a rod. It eliminates air pockets in the propellent and makes it burn more evenly and with more force. The wadding helps seal the barrel behind the ball and provides a better velocity.

You've got that backwards for a breech loader.
@briannemec9214
@briannemec9214 10 ай бұрын
No he is right. Breech loaded rounds powder is usually in a "bag". The bag acts to keep the powder tight and supplies a seal behind the projectile. For proper ignition a pick is pushed in the wick hole to puncture the bag. This seal helps prevent hot gasses going around the projectile an burning groves in the barrel. You might put some light packing in front of a ball projectile when shooting a negative elevation, keeps the ball from rolling out. Too much packing in front could become an obstruction. The packing could act like a wedge an not allow the projectile to move. This changes a cannon into an IED. Nice job. I hope it easier to clean match powder than black powder. For me a few hours of shooting means a night of cleaning. @@joearledge1

Now I want one. Maybe using #10 Percussion Caps or even 209 shotgun primers if going for .50 cal with 30 or 50 grain Black Powder pellets. And in the US all black powder is 100% legal so no issues there. I would probably do the main parts out of steal instead of brass just cause it could handle it better and last longer. Although adding rifling might be a tad tricky.

Something I really appreciate is your warning at the beginning. I've seen creators punished in the past where someone tries to recreate it only to get hurt. Never understood that as it's not the KZbinr's fault a viewer decided to attempt something that might end badly.

Thank you so much B! I know what you mean about the knot, thought about doing a new piece, but 1) I didnt have a elm wood piece this size 2) I somehow loved the imperfection, but 3) i agree, its a weak spot - so i agree :-) Yes, like always, i keep the projects i restore/make and...if Mr. P Jr. wants to have it one day...it´s his :-) We´re doing better, but...not a 100%. very nicely done but just a couple points. The red material you're scraping off the match head is mostly potassium chlorate. The 'striker' you scraped is red phosphorus. If you haven't experienced this yet, you will find out that Armstrong's Mixture is highly friction sensitive. You're lucky that you didn't grind the two together - but if you want an energetic 'bang' out of this, you should grind each component individually, and then carefully combine them. Why not make some old fashioned black powder? Alternatively, turn this into a "Carbide Cannon"
