I hope you have fun with the video! If you have any questions on the used tools, materials or the processes, write it in the comment section - i´ll try to answer as soon as possible!
If you want to support my channel hit the like, leave a comment, subscribe and share my work. It helps a lot! :-)
In this video I restored this old 'Gustav Barthel 300' Blowtorch. After purchasing the first test showed, that this old beauty still works a little bit. But the condition was pretty bad, so its time for a restoration.
I started with disassembling the whole Blowtorch. The tank was cleaned with paint stripper, and sandblasted afterwards. unfortunately i had to remove the old sticker as well. But i spray painted a new sticker with templates from my plotter. The whole paintjob was sealed in 2K clear coat.
After that the tank was done, i restored the brass parts. They were sandblasted with glass beads, after that i wirebrushed them with a brass wirebrush.
The last part was the type label. I removed the old paint, spraypainted the whole label in 2K black matte and engraved the original lettering with my laser.
The final test shows that this beast works perfectly fine now!
What is the small part in the nozzle for?
The small part AND the lever are a cleaning unit. At the tip of the small nozzle there was a little steel brush once. When hitting the lever, the brush cleans the nozzle. Unfortunately i couldnt remake this part.
How does this blowtorch work?
You start by hitting the pump for around 5-6 times. The pressure presses the gasoline at the top of the blowtorch. When preheating (what I did with a second Blowtorch), the gasoline transforms into gas. With the capillary effect new gasoline will be 'sucked' into the nozzles.
Without preheating things could end pretty bad, since the gasoline is still a liquid. it would splash burning gasoline around.
Brand: Gustav Barthel
Model: 0300
Time: around 1950

@@misterpatinaif you didn’t use Oxystrip and just blasted it would you get the same results. Letting a project sit for 28 days to strip off paint seems quite long, I love the way it came out!!!

@BuddyDanger 28 days was just a joke (there’s a movie called '28 days later'). I use paint stripper before sandblasting, because I don’t want to have the paint particles in my sandblasting cabinet, nor in my lungs.

Excuse me Mister P but you mixed up the franchise timeline. This is John Wick 2 - Return of the Firethread as John Wick appeard first in my train lantern resto. It seems that Keanu is working with different producers. Let's confront him together while having our next beer. The laser work is really really nice. Overall great job and satisfying video.

Hey folks, additional info: The small gear with the 'missing teeth' isnt broke, it was manufactured this way - these teeth are missing on purpose: otherwise this gear wouldnt fit into the housing. On the other hand it controls the "way" of the lever, so it only can make a 90° turn. Thanks!

Nice sandblasting process! It works like only air, no dust. I restored Gustav Barthel on board the vessel and use handmade sandblasting camera (material plywood) - excessive dust. All your cinemas are very interesting and useful for beginners!

Greetings from Petersburg! That's what I like about old blowtorches? The fact is that they work completely cynically, disregarding the quality of fuel, weather and temperature conditions, the condition of the valve and nozzle. And they don't care about their looks. They. Just. Сontinue to work. What about modern blowtorches? Either the gasoline is not the same, then the pressure is low, then the nozzle is a little dirty, then the weather is cold / hot.. Sucks, not blowtorches. As for your work, my friend, I would be pleased to work with such a blowtorch. Health and peace to your family! 🤝🤝🤝

Nice restoration. Laser machine is very interesting... About how it is working the blowtorch: Start by put 5-6 pumps for pressure, as you said. To preheat the head, you must put a small quantity of gasoline in the "cup" under the head and ignite. After preheating, works as you said. This type of blowtorch use normal gasoline, for cars, which is not so light. That is why the head was covered in soot at the beginning...

Mister Patina, you might be able to fabricate a cleaning brush for the torch out of a set of Carburetor Cleaning Brushes, they are used to clean carb jets, which are pretty narrow. try going down to your local auto parts store and ask about brass cleaning brushes for carburetor jets.
