This was a good summary. It gave me some insight that I wasn't able to glean from the playthroughs I've watched. I picked up the board game hobby a couple of years ago and am starting to put together the things that I like and dislike about the games I have. This one has peaked my interest but the lack of an overarching campaign makes me hesitant. I've made some terrible impulse buys in the past so I tend to over research before purchasing. Anyway, I was thinking about getting something to tide me over until some things from KS arrive... 7th Continent and one that I missed but was able to pre-order from "The Game Steward"... I think it was "Legends Untold". Really excited about that last one. It looked like it had some interesting and meaningful strategic choices. I play strictly solo so videos like yours help me make less impulsive and more informed purchases... and are appreciated.

XHuntinatorX Thanks and glad you enjoyed the video. This offers rich and complex solo card-based play with many meaningful choices and possible patches through the challenges. That said, if a campaign element is important to you, you will be left wanting as this game doesn’t have it. Overall, this game is one of my favorites (but I don’t care at all about campaigns).

Great video! I have both Mistfall games and enjoy them quite a bit. But my biggest gripe with the games is; the cards aren't instantly recognizable. I guess it's due to the limited budget, but every card has the same illustration, there is no clear visual clue that shows what the cards actually do. My problem is not, that it's just a bit boring to look at (I like the artstyle), but whenever I pick up a card, I don't go "oh cool", but I rather have to start reading and figuring out what the cards can do. This makes the game a bit dry for me. I don't get the same excitement I have, when I look at cards from Magic, Mage Wars or Middle Earth CCG. I think, if they'd get that aspect right, this game would be a LOT more successful and accessible.

So glad you liked the video and thank you for the comment. I have to say I completely agree with what you are saying. The art was a turn off for me because everything just looked maroon! It does make the game harder to approach for sure (as if they needed another hurdle). The art issue also further emphasizes all the text and keywords! Art budgets can be huge so I guess it was for financial reasons.

I watch a lot of board / card game videos. A lot. This is one of the best videos I've ever seen. Thank you for the thoughtfulness and level of effort that you put into this. The game is on my table (for the third time) and I still haven't played it, but I agree with you on many issues you raise. It's inexcusable that the manual doesn't come with a page that defines all of the many icons. And like you said, the manual is difficult, but given the complexity and interconnectedness of the mechanics, I can't conceive of a better way to present the material. Plus, the replayability is immense, especially if combined with the characters from the original Mistfall. I guess one of the facets of this vid that I appreciated the most was your discussion of how the various parts of the game made you feel. This is a huge aspect of immersion. You were daunted and put off by the rulebook. Once you got past that, you were warmed and drawn in by the starting tile that you placed. Great stuff! And so appropriate for an adventure game. I've subscribed. I'm a fan. And I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos. If any of them can live up to the quality of this one, I will be well blessed.

I was thinking of buying this as DLC for Tabletop Simulator. After browsing through the rules, and noticing what a complex machine it is, I wanted confirmation that the investment (of time and effort) would be worth it. Recently a lot of high end, AAA (so to speak) coop/solo boardgames are overly complex, overly heavy, just for the sake of adding components and play time to increase the price of the box (in my opinion). So your video was the deciding factor to dive in, since we share a few of the same priorities (heavy theme through mechanics, for example). Thanks!!!

I have no idea what DLC for tabletop simulator means but Mistfall is a great game. I still stand by my assessment. The overhead is in service of the theme and it all works if you want an involved card-based game

I got that expansion last week, so I'm getting the game out again. Side quests, more rewards, Lieutenant ennemies, more allies. Awesome "little" expansion that improves the replay-ability of a game that already has tons of it.

Unless they changed the range rules in Heart, you didn't make a mistake WRT range 2 being able to target stuff in the other hero's area. Range 2 can affect your own hero area, any other hero's area, or the quest area.

Can you compare it to the original Mistfall, is it worth playing too ?
@GeekGamers01
@GeekGamers01 Жыл бұрын
Comparing them is beyond the scope of what I can do right now but I will say that if you like one, you will like the other one. If you don’t like one, you will not like the other one. They are very similar. Heart of the Mists has a few different mechanics but not enough to make a difference if you don’t like the original

Having recently purchased Aventuria: Adventure Card Game, is Mistfall significantly different enough to consider purchasing?
@GeekGamers01
@GeekGamers01 6 жыл бұрын
Richard Worthington Most definitely. Misfall is closet to Some parts of Mage Knight if you know that game and how the combat works. Aventuria has more of a narrative (or at least tries to) tho some of the card play in Aventuria is quite like Mistfall and Mage Knight too. For me I think there is more replay value in Mistfall especially since you can integrate the base game so easily with Heart of the Mists. There is also more of a sense of place/location in Mistfall than Aventuria.

5 reasons to play the game, it it starts with the rule book which has a negative view. Not a very good sale's pitch XD. Second step is the difficulty learning curve. Also not convincing XD. I saw this played and roughly explained on KZbin and it has similar concepts to the amazing, yet dead (I hate you Games Workshop and Fantasy Flight Games) game, Warhammer Quest The Adventure Card Game. BTW I already have Mistfall: Heart of the Mists on my table, still in the clear wrapping. 1:04am having gotten home not long ago. What's going to piss me off is this is yet another game I have to do the work of re-writing the bloody rules in a format that is clean. That's slack when the developer isn't getting his work read by multiple people and listen to the feedback. That and getting a game where the components don't fit in the box once you've unpacked it all and punched out all the tokens, also a decent storage method for people who use card protectors. Gonna watch the rest of your video. :)

Kindlesmith80 My memory of the rules weren’t that they were poor per se but that the design itself relies on tons of symbols etc which must be learned as part of any mechanic and that aspect is fiddly, idiosyncratic, and cumbersome. Still I do quite enjoy this game tho getting it back out after not having played for a while is initially slow going

Nicely done. Any advice on getting over the learning hump? It's been on my table for a couple of weeks, but each time I sit down, I struggle with the rules enough that I end up walking away.
@GeekGamers01
@GeekGamers01 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Dave. Glad you enjoyed it. Guess it sort of depends how you learn. Personally I like to take the components out and set them up as if I'm playing a game and that starts to help. There are some playthrough videos online which I watched part of just to get a sense of set up and the beginning of a turn. The Gray Board Gamer has a series. He goes veeeeerrrrry slowly which made it hard for me to watch too much of but watching parts of them were invaluable to get going. I'd also just start playing a turn as best you can. I found the player aid card to be quite helpful too, at least in terms of turn order--and then I often had to refer back to the rulebook for details that weren't on the aid card).

What do you mean replayability. There are 10 quests. After that you are done. I don't call 10 games very much replay.
@GeekGamers01
@GeekGamers01 5 жыл бұрын
Well for my brain (and the way I play, which is not to play a game for weeks in a row but rather to play for a while and then switch), there's replayability. I'd never remember quest 1 by the time I had played 9 others. Of course, it's all subjective. And also, with all the different characters, character combinations, and cards for me that's a lot of replay value.
@kosterix123

@@GeekGamers01 OK. So it's a memory thing. I get that. My SO has this cute jigsaw puzzle she solves every 6 months or so. As for HotM, I would make a table and do every quest for each different combination of heroes. And there is nightmare mode. That's a lot of quests. Next up are the tuckboxes for all the cards. Thematic and the board is less of a mess that way.
@Hybban
@Hybban 4 жыл бұрын
Each time you play the same quests you'll have different location tiles and if you get some of the same, they'll be placed and ordered differently. On each location, you'll have a very different encounters. EVEN if you get the same encounter on the same location, you'll draw different ennemies. If you add the fact that your heroes may be different and the reward deck will be different. Anyway, you'll never play the same quest the same way twice. And most of the time, the same quest will have very different outcome and flow each time. Even with the same final boss. This is what I call GREAT replayablility. At least this is how I see it.

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the comment. Yes, I do have Mistfall and have played it since filming. (At the time of filming, I had not.) I have integrated the two games. I find the characters in Mistfall a bit less complex (I've now played all characters in both sets with just one exception) and the scenarios in Mistfall also see a bit more straightforward (tho I haven't played everything in either box yet). Even with the Mistfall characters/set I do not use the timing cards; I just the Heart of the Mists rules for whatever I play. Your question is reminding me that I want to get this out again soon!

Hi, I am thinking about buying this game, but cant decide between this or gloom of kilforth,mage knight or Albion's legacy..what would you advise? Thanks for any advice!
@GeekGamers01
@GeekGamers01 5 жыл бұрын
They are all somewhat different games and while I own Albion's Legacy I have not played it yet. I find Mage Knight to be, year in and year out, the game I return most to for this sort of card-based heavy game. That said, I also play it with some fanmade material that brings more 'adventuring' into it by way of side quests and a store and things like that. (You can find all this stuff on the BGG game page.) Mistfall, for pure card play with some location and travel sense is top notch. While I loved the art of Gloom, of the games you name that I've played that is by far my least favorite. It came to feel a bit dry after a while. The learning curve on Mistfall was higher for me than Mage Knight but you may experience that differently. I'd recommend watching gameplay vids of both MK and Misfall and choosing one of those.

@@GeekGamers01 I have watched many videos on each game, but value your opinion above some others as I think you like the adventure side and themes of games as I do, I may be wrong in assuming that,but Mistfall looks like it has more of what I want from a game, I'll discard gloom of kilforth for now based on what you have said in regards to it...Mistfall sounds like it as more depth to it and sense of journey! I appreciate your input, keep up your great work 😀

@@GrungefolkBoy2010 Thanks. I do think you will be happy with Mistfall based on what you say you are interested in. The location tiles really give a sense of place, combined with the various enemies that come out depending on where you are. This is making me realize I need to play that game again soon! It's tough to get a handle on the rules and symbols, I'll admit, and I myself will need to review my own video and maybe some others, but if you like heavy-ish games; card/hand management; enjoy a fantasy theme; and want to play characters who 'feel' different--you can't go wrong.
