I’m so proud of Misty. She had a lot of time to reform and when she finally did, she didn’t do it because it was right but also because her friends needed her. I knew she would be a good friend to the mane five from the moment I saw her and I was right. We were all right about Misty reforming. Now it’s official. Sunny is the element of magic, Izzy laughter, Hitch honesty, Zipp loyalty, Pipp generosity and Misty kindness. They truly are the mane six of G5 and I’m so happy about that. Keep fighting along with your friends, Misty and you’ll defeat Opaline.

I didn’t know that Misty had an element too. But I knew about the other ones. You know, Sunny’s and Hitch’s were the only ones that carried over from the past generations. My theory is that those with the element of kindness can talk to animals, because those are the only ponies we’ve seen do it. Also, I think that the mid-generation old Mane 6 elements were the best. Not because I’m a G5 hater (which I’m not), but because I think they were the most important and meaningful. Star Swirl’s elements were physical traits and surface-level traits, the new ones are good but you don’t require them in a friendship, the middle-generation ones were the only ones where you actually required all of them to have a good friendship and the Magic just came of it.

And to think that my first impression of Misty was that she was going to be the dumb minion. She actually helped more people see the meaning in G5.

I knew she could only get her cutie mark when she truly changed and helped the Mane 5, because that’s when her real self came out and she found her real purpose. The butterfly also symbolizes her change, and it was just a random cutie mark she drew on, like so many other random things she does that end up being meaningful, like the “cleansing” line in that one short she used as an excuse but she actually did cleanse herself of the necklace’s energy. I love her so much!❤

Because her whole arc is about her changing her morales and sacrificing what she wants to prove her loyalty to her new friends

Well I haven't listened to what you say yet. But I wanted to comment first. Looking up butterflies, I find they symbolize transformation, rebirth, joy and creativity. That certainly aligns with Misty and her transformation to a better pony. She changed as she interacted with her friends and was reborn in a way when she got her cutie mark, now she can experience more joy and help her friends by coming up with creative ways to stop Opaline and maybe other things as well. I think Butterflies would also symbolize freedom as well since that fits with her breaking free from Opaline and spreading her wings. I think it means her special talent is to be free and make the world a better place by defeating Opaline. That is her destiny.

I'm a big fan of the bad-guy-turns-good trope, so how poorly the trope was executed in G4 has always bothered me. you are so right that this is probably the best redemption/reformation in the whole franchise!

As I have discussed in some other comment sections, I feel that Misty was better handled in Tell Your Tale than in Make Your Mark. In Tell Your Tale, thanks to that amulet/necklace of Opaline's, Misty got to play a more active role as an antagonist, and in that way, was a more fun villain by comparison. That way, her struggle with leaving Opaline is more understandable, at least in my eyes: At the point that she had become more of a villain, and even still tried to help Opaline in Make Your Mark Chapter 4, despite planning to leave Opaline for good and only acting on it AND stopping herself from helping Opaline until the very end of the chapter. I feel that in Make Your Mark, her reformation in Chapter 4 could have been redeemed by a change in episode order: Have her declare wanting to leave Opaline in the second-to-last episode, not when there are still three episodes left to go, including one where she is still the protagonist anti-villain. TYT, however, has her becoming more reasonably conflicted with her struggle against Opaline. Instead of having good reason to leave her, with her being more consistently abused, only to not act on it at the last second (which, like Opaline's abuse, is unfortunately a believable aspect in the context of real life child abuse victims around her age, even if it doesn't feel as satisfying as it should)...we have a Misty who has good reason to turn to the side of good, but has become enough of a villain to have better reasons to stick by Opaline. We didn't see as much of Opaline's abusive side in Tell Your Tale, except for maybe abandoning Misty after one of her failed schemes, and got to see her more pragmatic and charismatic side, while she wasn't with Misty. Especially if you are able to take Make Your Mark out of contact with Tell Your Tale, which I think that it should be considering multiple things, this Misty is not as much of the tragic villain that she was in Make Your Mark. She has friends who care about her, which does include Zipp despite her suspicions, but it's thanks to that pendant that she more actively pursues Opaline's plans willingly, rather than doing it with more clear hesitation and doing it anyway. It's thanks to that pendant that she feels more in line with her life as Opaline's right-hoof mare/henchmare, until she finds out the hard way just how that pendant was controlling her, when it is taken out of her possession. She's less sympathetic, but in turn, her last minute reformation and her being a designated anti-villain feels more appropriate and understandable.

@@doc_anubis I believe that it is possible to balance out her more sympathetic character in Mark Your Mark, and her more tryhard semi-serious villain side in Tell Your Tale, especially with the pendant acting as a potential crux during the unseen events of Chapter 4. I agree that they can work in correlation with one another, but the problem is that they are within separate media and paint different pictures because of that. That is why I take one as better than the other, rather than looking at both of them as one and the same, as Hasbro intended it.

Now that Misty's development stopped I hope we see Sunny acting as more of a main character. In Tell Your Tale it was shown that Sunny has doubts about them defeating Opaline and I hope that plays a big part in Make Your Mark

Hmmm, I think at this point it’s a little early for Misty to become an Alicorn, and even then if she does we’re unsure if she does become an Alicorn, would she become a physical Alicorn like Opaline, or a temporary Alicorn like Sunny? Maybe you can only become a temporary Alicorn in G5, and being a physical Alicorn was only when magic was available to everyone all the time. It is something I’d like to see though in the future, and maybe it will happen in the Secrets of Starlight special!

I love this video! I agree. But Im just gonna be honest: I think Misty's cutie mark means to be free. Think about it: She was a caterpillar at first. She was forced to bitting for one she (maybe loved). She was in a cocoon while trapped with Opaline. Now that she's free and has found where her heart truly belongs, she has a butterfly as a cutir mark to represent her freedom and new life with Mane 5. (Just dropping what I think).

She no longer had to hide. She was going through a big change in finally finding real friends. I can relate to her. Her discovering that they were her real friends was the Opaline-serving caterpillar going through its chrysalis, and then became a butterfly when she truly proved her loyalty to her friends.

man..this sure was a long road for misty. a road that only has one more bump..Opaline. if opaline still is a force to be feared misty is not truly reformed, yes she has chosen her side..but let us remember..she was ruled by fear by a weak opaline..and the real damage we saw opaline do to misty in the show was to ground her....but now? Now Opaline has her magic and power. now if she truly wants she can make misty obey her by force. and yeah you can argue that this won't happen since this is a show for younger lads and gals...but still. MLP always founds a way for the bad guys to control their minions. so for nowm, at least in my opinion, misty is about 80% reformed, give or take. so until opaline is truly defeated she won't fully reform.
