I had the pleasure of hanging with Mitch on tour. He really was that shy, and really was that party guy, as well. Like many of us, drugs and alcohol helps one to escape their shell. He was a really fun person, always with grand ideas and wanting to just hang out. A genuinely good person, who did not try out stand-up schtick offstage, once he was off, he was off, but a phenomenal guy. Yes, his eyes are mostly closed on stage. No, he was not mostly high. Yes, typically drunk. He had such bad anxiety that I think it is the only way he could do an act and it made it sound funnier to him, and thusly, the rest of us.

Mitch Hedberg in my opinion was one of the greatest comedians of all time I’m 54 years old and I love comedy so I’ve known comedy for decades and I’m gonna tell you he was amazing was amazing. Unfortunately, yes, it was the drugs that had them like that he was high most of the time on stage, but I hate to say it because he died with an overdose, but that was part of his allure because his personality is so out there. By the way, he is the king of one liner comedy. He reminds me of Richard Lewis from back in the 80s.

I am SOOO glad you laughed at Mitch Hedberg! (I was a big fan when he was alive, I still am, but I was then too.) Like you said, he was a very likeable guy. He is/was genuinely a really shy guy. I've seen interviews, backstage cameras, and tour bus videos. Mitch was always like that. When he first started, he would face the wall because he was too nervous to face the audience. Later he started wearing sunglasses and still usually stared at the floor a lot. You can see even here he is hiding behind his hair and looking to the side a lot. (He didn't get high on stage. But, like so many people, once you try heroine, always chasing that high... He tried to quit several times. He died one night in his hotel room alone while out on tour [JUST as he started to become famous]. Some people think he OD'd because he tried to quit [sometimes when people quit, and then do heroine after a long break, it is too much for their new body to handle].) So glad you like Mitch Hedberg. Because he says one-liners, it is easy to think it is not as funny/impactful as story-based comedians. But I think coming up with so many jokes in 15-30 minutes requires at least as much work/effort. Once you know his jokes, you will see people quoting his jokes online everywhere. I look forward to more reaction videos of his work. (it's just a good, simple laugh. Turn your brain off and enjoy.) "Is a hippopotamus a hipp opotamus, or just a really cool opotamus?!"

I find it really neat that Hedberg did what he did. Basically, as people we can develop coping strategies, etc. But we only have so much control at the end of the day over what our anxiety triggers are, etc. Like for me for example, I work in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and I don't find the job stressful at all. Many people do, or just can't do the job. But yet, the smallest confrontation with a loved one can cause me very strong anxiety and stress, stuff that would probably barely affect many people. Anyway, this is a dude who essentially has strong stage fright/anxiety from public speaking that he can't control. But he likes, is good at, and wants to do comedy. So he goes out there every time, wears sun glasses so he can close his eyes, etc. visible nervous and shakey, and he never really got over that fear. But he kept confronting it head on and doing what he wanted to do, and dealing with the challenges the way he was wired through at him. I realize that substance use or abuse *may* have factored into his ability to do what he did, and I would never suggest someone do a career that requires them to do that stuff in order to have the courage, but regardless, I still think it is neat, and he was still nervous, and it still required constant courage.

If you listen to his three CD releases, they all have differen't energy. I think some of that had to do with how anxious he may have been for any given performance and any narcotics he may or may not have taken. He was self medicating with some hard drugs and the addiction that resulted from it is unfortunately what led to his early death.

He's like me a bit. I'm an insomniac, all my dreams are lucid, and I'm a light sleeper. Lucid dreams CAN be nice, but it mostly sucks so damn much. It's closing my eyes to be somewhere else for a while when I'm able to pass out. Being conscious while awake and asleep for weeks means eventually my brain and body just give out and I'm hit with what's almost like temporary narcolepsy for several days or more. I can't stay awake or alert, I'll just lose consciousness and be out until I snap awake, equilibrium is gone and can't focus, dizziness and nausea if I sit up straight or try to get up. It scares the hell out of me sometimes.

Take this with a grain of salt, but in this video the crowd gets what he is doing and are laughing legitimately which makes him more comfortable. He is also pretty much wearing black out glasses, to avoid the audience in an effort to keep his crippling stage fright in check. The other video you guys watched and are commenting on at 3:05 didn't work that way. The rumor is he bombed with the audience from the first special and comedy central used canned laughter to fix it for TV. His set was rock solid and hilarious that night, but that audience didn't "get it". A documentary I saw on Mitch had a segment with the comedy central executive who made the decision to add the fake laughs and he said "That audience would have booed Stephen Wright and it isn't fair to Mitch that 50 randoms were going to hurt his carrier because they were drinkers not stoners."
