@@tonymorris4335 if you search for an article titled "Report: Mitch Hedberg died of drug overdose" you will discover that he didn't accidentally overdose with fentanyl. He was doing speed balls and going up to the edge and pushing it more and more each time. 'Comedian Mitch Hedberg died accidentally in March of "multiple drug toxicity," including cocaine and heroin' And this corroborates what someone who had done speedballs with Mitch and would have been in the room when it happened had he not passed out before going over to his using buddy's house (Artie Lange) said. Fact is, Mitch had debilitating stage fright and impostor syndrome and he was as broken as any of his contemporaries, so many of whom also died via self-harm. Mitch was a tormented genius like so many before him and his demons eventually won the fight.

Mitch's best trait was that his jokes were usually either clever observations or outright stupid premises, but his ability to influence the mood of the audience with his unintentional charisma (coping from his stage fright) wound up making him hilarious. He put a lot of effort into his jokes, but like you said, if anyone else told them straight, they'd have a dead crowd.

I've tried many times to tell Mitch's jokes to friends because they're so easy to remember and short, but they just don't land without his cadence and delivery and I am no impressionist lmao Some of them just sound like plain statements without his style of delivery. One of the things that rarely gets mentioned about Mitch - except by other comics - is just how far outside the "rules" he played the game. Even after he started rising & becoming known, he would still play colleges, & 30-seat clubs, & the like. He would also give pretty much anyone a 5-10 minute slot in front of his set just because he knew how hard it was trying to get your footing in the industry. Comics remember him with Love, & it's not lip-service. Mitch was a force of nature, but not the roaring hurricane type - he was the rip current that you didn't even realize had grabbed you until you were too far away from shore to swim back without assistance.
