The whole shifty, almost sinster denial that they are hopeless drunks is priceless and so spot on. Pretending to be nice, wholesome gents out for a walk. The dry, liver-spotted faces. Pathetically clinging to an veneer of respectability. The weary barman forced to take part in their pitiful charade, even though they do this every single day.

I'm impressed that the barman uses the traditional correct phrase used since 1914, 'time gentlemen please' when he rings the bell. You don't hear that much nowadays, they just ring it and don't bother saying anything or perhaps some variation like 'time at the bar'.
@Julyfaction10 ай бұрын
Didn't know that was traditional phrase for bar close in the UK. Here in the USA there's no bell and the bartender will just call out "Last Call!". If one were to say "Time gentlemen please" someone would think an overly polite person was asking to look at your watch lol ⏰😄🍺

@DarrenBonJovi9 жыл бұрын
+BenRangel This is an "alcoholic lager beer"…
@georgejohnsmith9 жыл бұрын
+BenRangel The two sketches address two different phenomena in Great Britain. The "Alcoholic" you refer to depicts the good old stylish hypocrite (usually an older male), who pretends not to be an alcoholic, though he ends up sleeping on the pavement after consuming his usual daily dosage. This phenomenon has been known worldwide throughout the last two centuries at least (i.e. it is not specific to Great Britain), and I consider it a relatively benign phenomenon. This sketch, on the other hand, depicts a cultural phenomenon quite specific to Great Britain: Binge drinking. This has been almost obligatory for all males in GB, from their late teenage years. Nowadays it is spreading rapidly among teenagers of other European countries, and I consider it a very malign phenomenon. So the two sketches are quite independent from each other and are very contrasting, so maybe it is not surprising that you find the other sketch more funny. To be honest, I am typing this while drinking the cheapest vodka mixed with similarly cheap banana juice. So that you know, I am not bullshitting you.
@RobKnowledge1969 жыл бұрын
+georgejohnsmith I doubt they're supposed to be binge drinkers. They're fairly stereotypical alcoholics. The fact that the barman offers to put their bill "on the slate" suggests they're regulars, and they leave to drink cheap vodka. That is how alcoholics do. Trust me, I'm a chef. As with most chefs in fine-dining, I'm an alcoholic mess.
@georgejohnsmith9 жыл бұрын
+RobKnowledge196 I do not see the conflict here. Alcoholics and binge drinkers are not disjoint sets.
@RobKnowledge1969 жыл бұрын
georgejohnsmith A binge drinker would drink heavily maybe once a week. An alcoholic drinks constantly, they're completely different. Getting shitfaced at the weekend is different from drinking first thing in the morning before work just to keep jitters and anxiety at bay.
