Yeah its really odd when you are recording it too, and they make you do the same thing over and over. It feels progressively less natural to "just walk over here and look that way" and "could you say that again". I did two days filming for a 20 min segment on a programme. The interviewer recorded his questions totally separately to my answers too, all in one go. When I was on Northwest tonight once they even cut my answer so it said something completely different to what I said too.

To be fair, I expect they have a seperate car from the camera crew, so they can set up a shot without the "talent" car having to do double duty. The sad truth is that theyll also make you do stuff thatll make you look bad. And the internet will shit on you for it. Like, a Dutch home improvement show gave a family a kitchen makeover, and the woman claimed she hated it because she didnt like the light switches and demanded it done over. The clip went viral ofc. No sensible person would do that in front of a camera. If she really didnt like them she couldve to ahardware store after the crew leaves and switch them herself.

I know everyone loves the way this sketch points out the fakeness of how these kind of shows are edited (I love that too) but for me the joke here is the guy's complete failure to understand it. Usually in these type of sketches David will play a character who is angry and frustrated at having to "pretend" and will go on a rant about how "Isn't this just patronizing the viewers? Surely they know you've already been here and set up your cameras so why do I have to pretend I am just meeting you for the first time now? Can't we just skip all this and be real with the viewers?" etc etc. But in this instance they have decided not to go down that route and instead David's character is really slow and confused and it's almost depressing (in a funny way) how he just doesn't get it lol.

If I was ever on a show like this I would fuck with the continuity in subtle ways like changing my collar between shots, messing up my hair, moving pictures around on the walls, etc. My mum upon watching the show weeks later would be like "That little bastard is at the mischief with that nice TV crew!"
@walsh9080
@walsh9080 2 жыл бұрын
Smoking cigarettes is a great way to mess with continuity. I have family members who worked on reality TV and one of them told me, they got really frustrated by this guy who basically chain smoked the entire day, because it was virtually impossible to get him to have his cigarettes at the exact same length when they edited. The end result made it obvious to any eagle eyed viewer that things were not filmed at the same time as the length of his cigarette would change between shots.

This reminded me of an old American TV show called 'Monk', especially when he said ''my hair will look longer'' exactly something Monk would say, because he could tell the difference of 1 day longer hair and would have expected others as well to realize, as if it's perfectly natural and normal.

The biggest thing that irritates me in these kinds of shows is when they do the 'opening the door, I'm so suprised to see you' thing. With camera footage from the INSIDE. One of the things that makes these guys brilliant are how they take the typical, parody it, and in doing so reinvent it leaving the audience with a greater understanding and broader view of the world we live in.

So in summary, creating a TV show involves a degree of illusion. The alternative being to take a million viewers and stuff them in the house. Both realistic options so I don’t understand why they feel the need to pretend the camera is the viewer
