Smoking cigarettes is a great way to mess with continuity. I have family members who worked on reality TV and one of them told me, they got really frustrated by this guy who basically chain smoked the entire day, because it was virtually impossible to get him to have his cigarettes at the exact same length when they edited. I know everyone loves the way this sketch points out the fakeness of how these kind of shows are edited (I love that too) but for me the joke here is the guy's complete failure to understand it. Usually in these type of sketches David will play a character who is angry and frustrated at having to "pretend" and will go on a rant about how "Isn't this just patronizing the viewers? Surely they know you've already been here and set up your cameras so why do I have to pretend I am just meeting you for the first time now? Can't we just skip all this and be real with the viewers?" etc etc. But in this instance they have decided not to go down that route and instead David's character is really slow and confused and it's almost depressing (in a funny way) how he just doesn't get it lol.
