Thor in his first solo film and Avengers 1 will remain my favorite iteration of Thor. While I also like his portrayal in Infinity War, I didn't like how his character (and also Hulk and Loki) was portrayed in Thor Ragnarok. I felt that they made Thor too much of a joke at the expense of his character and all of the development he went through in the past MCU films. Honestly, current Thor is really disappointing. As it feels like they stripped away a lot of his emotional depths that made Thor feel genuinely heroic and complex to me.

@@amorra6024 I’ve honestly only recently started to enjoy Thor. I really liked him in ragnarok, infinity war and endgame because the humour doesn’t take away from the emotional moments and we see how he uses it as a crutch. But now it seems like they’re swinging too far in the comedic direction
@jay4you8532 жыл бұрын
@@amorra6024 Thor Ragnarok was a joke, the humor was bad, the VFX terrible, the acting very questionable at times, and the world they built just didn't help. Also, the way they portrayed Hulk or Thor himself is just made me lose all interest in the movie and now TL&T just definitely killed the character, giving him no depth or substance. He's just a joke, a bad one. Yes humor is very subjective but I don't want to pay to see super-zeros but superheros doing superhero-ey things with a hint of comedy, a lot of good VFX and a tone of intelligent writing that doesn't ignore the previous movies and create more plot holes. It's time to give Thor some purpose because he could be the leader of the MCU as Tony is gone, but just like Dr. Strange he has no identity, serves no purpose. He's just here to be here and crack jokes...while he's being relegated to supporting character. Marvel is killing its own characters. Literally. Just look at how they made the so-called God butcher uninteresting as he never butchers Gods, missed opportunities...or how they made Wanda dispose of the so-called most intelligent man on Earth, who is supposed to appear in future movies but I won't care about as I'll assume since his other version from another universe was so weak, he might be the same. Marvel dropped the ball with that new phase and don't get me started with the bad TV shows...
@EB_36932 жыл бұрын
I think DCEU's failure at adopting a serious superhero universe scared them... despite the fact that MCU was already doing good creating a serious universe where humor was initially played as a coping mechanism to all the batshit stuff their heroes were undergoing. Seeing DCEU fail must have made them think that leaning on the one thing that set them apart - humor - was the way to go. Problem is in the earlier movies the humor often had a layer of intelligence underneath. Nowadays its like the actors are just lining up for their chance to get an average/good quip in.

This phase feels directionless cause we are being introduced to new characters so quickly instead of having at least two or three "main characters" and building there. The only time that the redemption of the villains really worked for me was in No Way Home, where it was the central focus of the narrative as Peter risks everything to help these people who are just victims of horrible events. Ock was definitely worth redemption, as was Electro, who was defined by a life of misery and nonexistence, Lizard, a man forced by Oscorp to test on himself out of desperation to save their CEO, Sandman, who just wanted to be with his daughter again, and Goblin, who just wanted to be free of his psychotic alter ego who was destroying his and many other’s lives. In my opinion, Marvel’s plots haven’t been the most mind blowing but they didn’t need to be, the characters were always strong. That’s the part that is missing now, there’s no character and they’re trying to focus on heavy themes by doing what? Delivering them half baked and undercutting them with either action, visuals and a generic figured out formula? There’s no sense of care in the characters, it just seems like, “Here’s a generic archetype, that’s all they’ll be until the end of the movie.” That’s just my two cents.
@s.kanessuperbiatv64642 жыл бұрын
This idea of 'mentioning a deep theme and never following up' has been around since phase 2. Fans hate criticism of Winter Soldier but even that movie had the same problem; it begins with questions about freedom vs. security and the surveillance state, yet nowhere in the movie does it explore that afterwards. It just turns out the government was filled with HYDRA and that's that. Infinity War mentions the philosophical notion of killing millions to save billions, but never discusses it. Somehow, every single Avenger just agree it's bad and proceed to solve this issue by punching it. I'd think at least SOME of the characters might agree with Thans, with tension coming from that. Civil War says it's about freedom vs. registration, yet it's never an issue. Cap and the others don't register to help Bucky on a side quest, not because of fundamental differences in belief. This has always been a problem; it's just become more obvious lately.

The best writing builds around the emotional core of a character. It doesn't help when marvel follows up a dramatic scene with a Joss Weadon punchline. Building around and maintaining a strong emotional core adds to the spectacle surrounding the character, be it action or VFX etc. Look at any emotional scene from say MHA, every beat that carries weight in an action scene is built upon the characters emotional state. In short, please just write out what "basic"/ baseline emotion you want your character to confront and build on that. Thor's should have been grief and loss in a way where he can demonstrate his own maturity over the course of the past few films away from Jane. Jane's could've been denial and that's why she acts more like Thor's carefree self, so then he has to be the "responsible" one.

You can’t say it was because Strange was arrogant because there is a difference between being arrogant and just bad at your own job. Peter could of easily gotten a spell where everyone could remember him but the rest of world and the entire movie wouldn’t have happened. I agree that every story has plot holes, however, when your story is built upon these plot holes it ruins the entire story because nothing is believable anymore. One is excusable, but this isn’t the only time where the entire story could of played out in a better way. Peter could of helped the villain while they were caged up, Aunt May shouldn’t have been with the villains, If Doc Ock didn’t run away during the apartment battle he could of helped save Aunt May, and why did Strange cast a spell that made everyone forget Peter? The only way for that to work is for everyone in the entire multiverse to forget Peter Parker which would ruin an infinite amount of Peter Parker’s lives. Would Peter Parker forget that he is Peter Parker because Tobey and Andrew disappeared meaning they had to forget about themselves? These are major problems that don’t just ruin No Way Home but Tobey and Andrew’s universes.

@@hopelesslyoptimistic8231 Doctor Strange literally tells people that they can make everyone forget he's Spider-Man, Peter just didn't listen and realize that the spell would include his loved ones. Peter needed Doc Ock and Norman Osborns help to create some of the cures, meaning they definitely couldn't have stayed in the jail, and Peter needed physical contact with ALL the villains to attach the cures, even if he did keep them in cages until he finished they would have just attacked him if he did that since they would have no reason to trust him, since they've been imprisoned. Aunt May gave Peter the motivation to help the villains it's perfectly in character for her to be there and want to help them as well, attempting to take care of them as Peter was working on the cures. Considering how easily Green Goblin took care of Doc Ock at the end of the movie he would have made little difference if he was there to help Peter. That's not how the spell works the villains in the multiverse are only drawn to this one due to being drawn to it having a Peter Parker who is Spider-Man, if everyone in the universe believes that there is no Peter Parker in this universe then the spell wouldn't be drawing in these other characters.

Marvel comics were famous for constantly upping the stakes, almost like Dragon Ball Z, introducing bigger and stronger villains, until eventually the heroes were facing off against Lovecraftian entities like Galactus the planet eater; the Eternals did experiment with the cosmic side of the comics, but bungled the execution. Phase 4 seems to have overloaded the audience with content, the beginning of Marvel’s foray into television; catching up with it all is starting to feel like homework. Post-credits scenes aren’t teasing the arrival of Kang, but introducing new actors into the franchise, often playing fringe characters that are hard to get excited about. Starfox and Hercules just aren’t as intriguing as the old favorites; X-Men and Fantastic 4 are the next big names to enter the MCU, and the mere thought of them seems to be fueling much of the Marvel hype. Hopefully, Kang starts to make more of an impact in the next few entries, because phase 4 needs a strong villain to focus on; without that threat, the momentum is starting to slow down.

I understand these movies make big money and it’s a business but I just hope that at least it doesn’t turn into something like Star Wars is today for example with the exception of the Madalorian where it’s quantity over quality or visuals over story telling and character and etc. Phase 4 to me still has me excited but at best it’s been a lackluster.

I think the main focus on the film should be on the main protagonist they should not be secondary characters in their own films it kind of makes the film have no point or at least change the title to reflect the fact of the film being someone elses film
Overall enjoyed the first 3 phases, but I think they have gotten a little too comfortable.

Rewatching this video now, the writing problem in the MCU is more apparent with how Marvel exec Nate Moore has admitted that they think a writer who is a fan of the comics is a massive red flag because they want people who look at the comics with some sort of disdain. After all, they want "new ideas" and people who are "hard on the material" which explains some of the writing problems in the recent movies. They are made by people who don't care about the material. I am fine with people who are not traditionally fans of the source material making some of these projects. Like how Tony Gilroy is not a massive fan of Star Wars and does not hold it in high regard as most fans do, but can tell a wonderful story because he doesn't hold any form of disdain for Star Wars and tells a story that is new and refreshing but holds true love for the material.

The crazy thing is this is an issue with Marvel in general not even just the MCU. So much of the comics that come out now feel like the story is already at it’s breaking point at the end of the first issue and then force you to slog through a slow and painfully predictable conclusion. Writers want to break away from tropes and subvert expectations that they have now become another trope that is tiring and makes wanting to continue a series harder and harder.

As a kid growing up watching Marvel movies, I lost interest in them around 10 or 12 years old. Back then I knew that these movies were just getting milked and the stories, characters, and plots get less compelling with each installment. I never understood the fans of that franchise and am still deeply confused by the fans now.

I agree that the writing has been a problem. But I don't agree that they have to be working towards the formation of a new avengers or some kind of event. Of course there should be a plan but if the individual movies/shows in phase 4 were good enough on their own we wouldn't be so worried. I think it is totally fine for them to double down on making good stories that are smaller scale. When they're dealing with ideas like the multiverse and time travel, the writing really has to be on point. I am quite worried that this problem is not gonna get better and the MCU will repeat the mistakes the comics have made.

Yea that’s not good storytelling hoe bout they knew she was coming so took the boys under protection putting them directly in her path to the boys? Giving them all an actual reason to fight the Illuminati to protect the boys and Wanda to take them but nooooooo gotta have that fight scene first and the story after

Not to mention that it seems like they're just rushing ideas out there just for the sake of perking interest, (especially when they know the interest in their content is waning.) So they sprinkle in little random aspects in there, like Ms. Marvel being a Mutant all of a sudden; and while that's a cool and Interesting change, it just felt kinda shoved in there, as if they thought that the introduction of Mutants could attract more attention to the show, (even though a lot of people just watched that scene here on KZbin, but didn't watch the show in it's entirety. Lol)
@jj224452 жыл бұрын
Well said, I agree with pretty much everything. The only thing I'd change is I think Marvel movies recently have been lacking a good 1st act not 2nd act.: - Shang Chi rushes through his childhood backstory to save room for giant CGI monster fights in the 3rd act. - Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness tells us in 5 minutes of exposition that America Chavez is a new important character and Wanda is suddenly evil. - Thor Love & Thunder literally opens with a quick villain intro, Korg fucking narrating everything that has happened to Thor to "catch us up", and Jane having cancer all within like 10 minutes. I think this happens for 2 reasons: - In the case of Shang Chi, the studio would rather have a 30 minute giant CGI monster fight, so they sacrifice early pacing and character development. - In the case of Thor Love & Thunder, I feel like the studio is just getting lazy and doesn't want to bother with re-establishing a character that has already existed in the MCU. They just assume we already know the character and can therefore do whatever they want with them going forward. - And in the case of Doctor Strange, maybe a bit of both.

I have nothing against SFCs, but not if they make all the male characters, incompetant, cowardly, or evil!
@Thomasmemoryscentral2 жыл бұрын
Hey Hewy, nice seeing you here. This problem with writing their strong female characters as nearly flawless with sometimes bratty personalities doesnt just stop with Marvel. See Star Wars, Doctor Who and Star Trek Discovery. I am also just fed up with their gaslighting fans in the media. Especially now they're going for the 2010's leftovers. No way can they make Ironheart work in the MCU unless they get rid of her stealing Tony's tech to create her suit and her baiting her female teacher into talking her down to give her a goal to work towards

I agree marvel having a clear plan would help. But also I don't need phase four to immediately get my focus on the next movies or build up to the next Thanos I need to get invested into the current state of the marvel universe and be invested in where these characters are at after endgame. I want a focus on getting the audience attached to the characters instead of continuously hinting at future projects. So when the big team events do happen it feels like a big pay off. seeing these characters learn and grow through their own movies and then team up when the stakes are the highest is cool.
@LoneWolf-gz9mr2 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is EXACTLY what I have been saying... I also think the Disney brand eating the marvel name has had a terrible side-effect... All of the animated stuff that had the marvel brand characters has also STOPPED... But that was the stuff that kept the characters "relevant" and got people into the comic books.... Now it's all got to tie-into the bigger picture (movies).... That doesn't work!! And the movies aren't "movies"... They are just "bits".... The only animated stuff containing the characters are "shorts" which are more of the same from the actual live series... "TUNE IN NEXT TIME"... It just doesn't work.. I mean for syndicated series it kinda does for an episode or 2, but for movies and ENTIRE seasons of series? Not so much.
@atharvashinde49052 жыл бұрын
If you look at pre endgame movies as stories of their own then they still have some substance to them but movies like Multiverse of madness aren't really good standalone movies the only reason they're successful is because they talk abou the multiverse in some way or the other. Each new movie isn't a movie in its own right it's more like an episode of a big show and even after so much time we still don't have a clear idea what marvel wants to do in phase 4

I don't think you give the general public enough credit. Yeah they're sheep who will eat the same food every day but if the food itself isn't tasty they'll only eat it for so long. I think the numbers will slowly go down and in one or two years Marvel will realize what's going on and make one of two choices: Either keep going and kill the golden goose, which would be both a damn shame and a chance for a new begining, or the (I think) more likely outcome that they'll scale back the number of projects to 2 or 3 a year and give them much more care and attention and the numbers will pick back up.
