How to Make a BAD FLASH Movie

The first part of my 'How to Make' videos for the Flash!! Would love to hear your ideas for a Flash movie and the direction you would take it.

You clearly seem to understand this character, and I cannot wait to hear your ideas and just like you I would love to see a Barry Allen portrayed as honest, humble, down-to-earth but also relatable and like you said, someone who almost has a introverted "dad-like" personality. When writing the Flash you most definitely need to have clever writing behind it, in order to portray the humanity and power scale of character without causing too much plot holes. If I was writing a Flash film franchise, then I would include at least 4 films and depict Barry constantly growing more and more as a character, learning to take it slow in life but understand that its never too late to make a real change. 1st film: Barry learning to come to terms with his powers and haaving his first confrontation with The Rogue's led by Captain Cold (tease Reverse-Flash) 2nd film: Flash becoming more of a hero but less of a friend to others. We find Barry discovering more about his abilities and his origins as we see Barry meet Eobard Thawne in the future and learn more about him, but discover who he truly is, as the Reverse-Flash and the same man who killed his mother. We also get introduced to Wally West (setting up Kid Flash) 3rd Film: After Barry nearly dies from his encounter with Thawne, we see him become more distant with his friends and family as Thawne nearly broke Barry with how psychotic and heinous his actions were against him. We also see the arrival of Kid Flash and meet Jay Garrick's Flash, where all three members of the Flash family team up to defeat Gorilla Grodd. Barry also becomes a father with Iris. 4th Film: Barry finally becomes a stable, balanced person and accepts his fate, but this will be the return of Thawne and this will be the final battle between Reverse-Flash and the entire Flash family, concluding Barry's arc in the entire quad-trilogy. This is just my own rough draft and although it does need some work, I am very much pleased with it. What do you think?

@@milkiassamuel780 That's some very good ideas, specially the fact you used Thawne in the second film rather than third like some people would done. This could give the Flash trilogy a formula similar to the Star Wars trilogy, with the second movie showing the darkest hour of the hero, he dealing with his biggest defeat. In fact, here's a suggestion: Since Thawne (in most versions of his origin) was a Flash fan who went crazy and became a villain, you could use Barry fight against him as the factor that inspire Barry, in the third movie, to become a mentor for Wally, wanting to prevent the kid from falling into the dark path like Thawne.

THIS! the amount of times I’ve said to my friends that the comics and media both reprogrammed Barry into being an essential blonde Wally, has been more than 100 times. It always makes me feel that if Barry wasn’t a good character pre crisis, then they could’ve at least tried to find things about him that make him somewhat likable and improve on them; rather than just making him Wally but blonde.

Exactly. A channel I watch called infinity comics made a great video about it. I watched it back when I didn't get the Barry hate, even though I grew up with Wally in the DCAU. While watching the video, I realized that DC had brainwashed me into liking Barry by making him Wally. Then they tried to bury Wally in recent years. They erased him with a separate character with the same name, then Heroes in Crisis happened. That's the biggest tragedy, not that Barry has been "Wallywashed," but that Wally has been burried

Even though Wally was still Kid flash at the time, the writers knew how Barry’s personality worked and how it differed from Wally’s. Barry says “Back in a Flash!” way too often, he causes them to be late for Independence Day, and we actually get to see his home life with Iris and Jay. Even though he wasn’t in the show that much, We got to see who Barry was, same thing goes for JL: New Frontier.

One difference between Barry and Wally was that Barry was more serious about being a superhero. Wally had more fun with it. Barry saw being a superhero as a responsibility, Wally saw it like being a celebrity or a rockstar. Which is why Barry is faster but he doesn’t discover all the speed force abilities that wally does. Wally has fun with it so he opens his mind more. Barry was more straight forward.

In the flash war story Barry said the reason is because he'd get lost in the science of the speedforce while Wally embraces he enjoys the speed. Barry would rather find a scientific solution to his problems than push himself.

From where I sit, Michael Rosenbaum was MY Flash due to my nostalgia for 'Justice League/Unlimited' growing up, but I see how that version has completely overshadowed who Barry Allen is before 'Crisis'. Which is understandable since Barry, and Wally are two different characters.

I'd literally just recast Ezra for Grant Gustin, he's the Flash we know and love, I know, in the CW there were many bad things. Here's the thing, Grant didn't do those things, the writer made him. Same thing with CGI artists, he was told to do something, did it well, but they messed up. It's the team he's working with and just making a timeline change or something could make it believable that Grant could walk in. It'd be a mini crisis on Barry.

I totally agree with you on practically everything that you said... except when you said that Ezra Miller’s Barry is basically Wally. He definitely isn’t Wally. I know that by that you mean that he’s a comedic relief character, but that doesn’t make him Wally. He honestly feels like a combination of Wally, Barry and Bart. He’s an introverted nerd like Barry, he’s a funny guy who quips and makes jokes like Wally, and he’s a hyperactive blabbermouth like Bart. This results in him being way too awkward.

Comic book inaccuracies won't matter if the movie is good. My only real concern for the actual story of the film is that Michael Keaton is going to overshadow The Flash in his own movie.

It really baffles me sometimes how people like you can write these iconic heroes better than professional writers and directors for a multimillion dollar film studio. The Flash does deserve better and I do like your idea that at the end if the film the entire timeline would be reset to recast a new actor (for the better). I am really looking forward to your Flash film video and thanks to you, you have given me a whole new perspective on the Barry Allen's Flash. Kinda like what everyone else said, some of the people getting involved aren't actually fans of the source material. They are just trying to pump out a money making film, not necessarily a good story. The Marvel films did well (especially in the beginning) because the people writing and producing the films worked for the same company making the comics. They actually cared about the characters.

A very important distinction between Barry and Wally that I feel like the CW show completely ruined is that Wally cares, Barry doesn't. Wally WILL slow down and talk to the villain he's trying to step and actively holds back punches to make sure they'll be fine afterwards. Barry does not, he'll just go in guns blazing and beat the villain as fast as possible.

That's... Very early in N52... Rebirth shows Barry having more heart towards his villains, such as Golden Glider, showing respect towards the Rogues, coming to understanding with Paradox, trying to Help Axel Walker due to the things that goes on with his life without an Arm. Barry only went "Guns Blazing" in the earlier section of his Superhero Career, even late in N52 he shows kindness towards his villains like visiting and chatting with a Captain Cold who's dying from Cancer, or even telling everyone during a Prison Break to walk back into the Prison, because it's not right.

I liked, or at least appreciated Zack Snyder’s films more than most, but I 100% agree that the Speed Force sequence in the film was deux ex machina. And it would have been so easy to fix by showing WHY he never does it, and it would have made the moment so much more powerful. Just imagine if Barry tried to convince the others the first time he did it to wake up the box that he couldn’t because the closer he got to the speed of light, the harder it is to slow down, and he’s afraid if he hits it he’ll be lost to the speed force, and the others talk him into trying. Thus his actions at the end are a deliberate self-sacrifice, and he is saved from the speed force by touching the mother box, which acts as a grounding rod and pulls him back into the time stream or something like that.

It's a deus ex machina if you don't pay attention. There's a scene prior when they are discussing reviving Superman where they both establish how the ability works and why it's too dangerous for him to constantly use.

That’s fine, until he does go faster than the speed of light as if knowing it will allow him to turn back the clock and save the day, and there are no apparent ill effects, so that foreboding was seemingly hollow.

The second time he revert time to save the entire justice league, the end credit show that it leads to the apocalyptic future where superman gone full rogue. There are clearly ill effects, and it even goes by the magnitude of how far he goes back in time.

Because of the nature of his powers, the Flash has had a very complicated series of storylines many of which won't translate well into a live-action film. One of the best stories, Flashpoint, is already being made into a movie in the DC Animated Universe. For a live-action film, I would prefer something that sits well with the current DC movie universe that already has Superman and Green Lantern in them. It has to be an origin story, of course, with Barry Allen as the only speedster in the movie which has a straightforward timeline, no jumping back and forth at least in the first movie.

The Flash reversing time in ZSJL didn’t come out of nowhere. We saw it happen earlier in the movie and he explained what would happen then he reversed time to get the timing right. The ‘Enter the Speed Force’ scene was him being saved from being wiped out, him reversing time on a larger scale, recreating with each step. It was setup previously and worked very well.

It feels like the closer we get to The Flash movie, the less excited I get about it. Because it's not a Flash movie. Flash is not even the biggest selling point of the film. People are getting more excited about Batman and Supergirl, and yet it's still being marketed as a Flash movie! I like Ezra Miller fine in the role, but I agree, he doesn't feel like Barry Allen, nor does he make for good publicity. If anything, he's bad for business. I honestly do want this movie will be good. I never go into a movie wanting to hate it. I don't think I'm gonna like it, but I want the film to prove me wrong.

About ZSJL's Flash turning back time: it is set up! During Superman's resurrection time flows backwards, and the Flash mentions strange things happen with time when he goes beyond the speed of light.

I've come to hate flashpoint and the death of Barry's mom. Her death is a retcon from Geoff Johns, and in continuity a change from Reverse Flash. Barry going back and saving his mom should be a good thing because he's putting things back but because we need Barry to have an uncle Ben to be interesting his mom has to die. I really think you can make Barry's character interesting without having his mom be dead and his dad in jail. I recently read Flash Life Story and it's a book about Barry written from Iris's perspective. Made me appreciate pre Flashpoint Barry a lot more.

Ok to be fair The Flash CW Season 8 is getting better I mean he's solved things and used his intelligence and gotten faster with that top speed being used multiple times to do stuff like in the first episode of Season 8 he handled villains and saved people like how comic flash would where he's taking advantage of his super speed to make enemies hurt each other, going fast enough to save passengers on 2 incoming trains with only less than a minute or 2 to get there

I know he's not many peoples favorite and his movie was better than I was expecting, but I don't really know who Arthur Curry is. There have been so many different interpretations of the character depending on who's writing and who he's with. I really like his portrayal in king of Atlantis but that show is such an outlier.

So, in DC's "Stargirl" on the CW, Earth-3 Jay Garrick(John Wesley Shipp) says he traveled around to other Earth's a lot when he was younger and helped out with the Justice League(s) of that Earth. I'd love to see Teddy Sears make a return, this time as *actual* Jay Garrick, and be from another Earth, and help out the Justice League of Gunn's new DCU. The "gods and monsters" as he called it.

To be fair Wally also wasn't "the funny one" before Justice League. Flashpoint should not be the third of a trilogy its should be the tenth movie of a DC universe arc. I'm not a Flashpoint fan but even I know it's about way more then just Barry and needs way more then just two movies as build up.

Not really, it started off as a Flash story, then DC saw an opportunity to make it a company wide reboot. As such, it is focused almost solely on Barry's progression as a character. Everyone else is sort of an afterthought the story's need to progress Barry's arc. It is not a DC universe story, it's a Flash story featuring the Justice League.

During his tenure as Flash in the 80s, Wally was the typical loveable impulsive womanizer jerk with a heart because at that time, more human complex characters with mistakes (basically Silver Age Marvel Comics characters) were the trend.

I will always be of the mind that The Flash 1 should always be when Wally becomes Kid Flash and Barry has been The Flash for about 5 years, he's a hero, respected. We get a Barry that's very closed off, intelligent and charismatic but doesn't want friends as he risks grief again. The League and Iris (best friends with a little bit of history but nothing major) struggle to relate to him (With the notable exception of Batman, who believes that Henry didn't kill Nora and can sympathise with him as an orphan) Wally allows him to open up because he sees Barry as an idol before the powers as Wally's parents have no time for him so he becomes close with Iris and therefore Barry. The Rogues are teaming up fully after 2/3 have in the past. Take him on from all sides showing that Wally is needed. Notably, I am talking about Wally West 1, who will go missing in the Speedforce trying to stop Barry committing Flashpoint (probably Thawne trying to isolate Barry). With Wally West 2 existing post Flashpoint. Do the rebirth reunion in a Justice League 2 parter film.

I get that flash point is a very popular arc, flashes most popular but it the stakes are WAY too high for a first flash movie. Before I even care about the characters, you’ve already set up this multiverse level event. If you really wanted to do a flashpoint adaptation for whatever reason then put it in like phase 3, set up thawn as a minor antagonist in the first film who slips by and then a main villain role in the second film so audiences better grasp him so in flashpoint, the third film he’s actually already somewhat important by then because aside from leading Berry to the battle reverse flash doesn’t do much till the end. And then maybe change the ending from “flash has to stop himself” to “flash has to kill himself” so Wally, the actual good flash can take over. Flashpoint itself isn’t even that good of a flash arc cuz what most people find interesting isn’t “the flash” himself, more so the batman who uses guns or the test subject superman.

If you are making a "How to Make a GOOD JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie", you can have a Infinity End-game style of DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths. Have Barry dying to save the multiverse, Hal Jordan or John Stewart rejecting to join the position of a Justice League member with Kyle Rayner and Wally West taking the mantle. The Injustice League can take part working alongside with their enemies and the New Gods could be step in - with Darkseid taking advantage of the Multiversal threat.

The only one I can think of is Flash: Rebirth of 2009, albeit in there is established the whole "retcon" of Thawne killing Barry's mother. Originally (60s) Barr wasn't driven by tragedy to become a superhero, after getting his powers he said that "is because the right thing to do" going in the same fashion as Superman, which made him so unique at that time. Some fans are even at odds with Johns' decision of killing Nora as Barry's motivation because of being "the same thing as the others now"

@SUPERFRAME Good video! I have been wanting you to make a "How to Make a BAD FLASH Movie" and "How to Make a GOOD FLASH Movie" forever. If I had total control over the Flash characters and how the story went I would do it like this. First of all I would make it less confusing so that means Reverse Flash wouldn't go back in time to kill his mom. His parents would be alive like pre-52 and the Reverse Flash would still be from the future but his orgin would be more compelling if that makes sense. Reverse Flash's origin was confusing too so I would make it so that in the future Thawne is a big fan of The Flash like Flash is his idol but him and his mom are being abused by his dad at home and he prays every night that Flash would save them but it never happened. Maybe Thawne's dad kills his mother. Thawne gets super speed and goes back in time to mess with Flash because he's angry that he never saved him. Kid Flash would be 21 I think sidekicks should be 18-22 so it can make more sense and that goes for Robin too. @SUPERFRAME what do you think? And I know "The Batman" came out already but could you do a "How to Make a BAD BATMAN Movie" and a "How to Make a GOOD BATMAN Movie"? Edit: And I agree with Barry's personality he shouldn't be too funny like Wally but he shouldn't be super super dark and serious and brooding like CW Flash.

The flash season 8 is a pretty good season and the flash in the show does everything that comic Barry does: take out foes and thugs in quick succession, does detective work, and formulates plans without team flash holding his hand. Also side characters that were written to be one note or annoying have some purpose to be in the show

(played by Bridget Regan) I thought it was because Matt Reeves wanted to use her in "The Batman" sequel alongisde Mr Freeze (yeah, i've been hate-watching this show on-and-off since season 1, because I wanted to see the episodes with Tommy Elliot, then season 2 because I wanted to see the episodes with Black Mask and Victor Zsasz, then season 3 for the episodes with Zsasz and Poison Ivy... and I was curious to see *Gotham* 's Renée Montoya coming back in the same role) After some google-fu, it does seem like there is a movie avec Pamela Isley in the works, but they still don't know who would make the film, who would play Pamela, etc etc It might end up not happening, like how sadly we didn't get the Ben Affleck Batman vs Joe Manganiello Deathstroke movie that I was so pumped about... In my opinion, the best way to do a Flash story is with 2 trilogies: First Trilogy (Barry Allen Trilogy): Movie 1: Origin story that gets the audience interested in the character, the villain can be one or two of the rogues. Reverse Flash gets teased in this film, but only in a flashback. Also Wally is in this movie, but only as Wally and not Kid Flash Movie 2: This next instalment should have Reverse Flash be the main villain. Barry learns about the multiverse and meets Jay Garrick. Wally becomes Kid Flash. Climax is the 3 Flashes fighting the Reverse Flash Movie 3: This finale for Barry's trilogy will essentially be the Flashpoint story from the comics and animated movie. Second Trilogy (Wally West Trilogy) Movie 4: After Barrys "death" in a Justice League movie, Wally West takes up the mantle of The Flash. Main villain will be Grodd cuz why not Movie 5: Bart Allen comes from the future as Impulse, idk who the villain would be but by the end Bart takes up the mantle of Kid Flash. Movie 6: Zoom will be the main villain

Very good idea. I thought the same thing althogh my pitch would a bit different First trilogy (Barry Allen trilogy) 1st movie - It would be adaptation of Flash Year One (with some elements of Flash of Two Worlds), showing Barry origin and learning to control his power with the help of Jay Garrick, a speedster from Earth 2, who Barry would help to track down and capture Gorilla Grodd, a Earth 2 gorilla who was used as guinea pig by nazi scientists that gave him his mental power and his hate for humans. 2nd movie - It would introduce Kid Flash, showing the beginning of him and Barry’s partnership, with Barry helping Wally to become a less impulsive and more wise hero, while the two deal with the Rogues (Captain Cold, Golden Glider, Heatwave, Mirror Master and Weather Wizard) a group of criminals who got their hands on Grodd’s weapons and became super villains. 3rd movie - It would have Barry’s big showdown against the Reverse Flash, with the villain tricking Barry into following him to the 25th century, where Barry is arrest by the police, who believe that he is actually Thawne. While Barry tries to escape from there, Thawne steals his identity and tries to ruin his reputation, with Jay and Wally trying to stop him. Second trilogy (Wally West trilogy) 1st film - It would showcase Wally taking over Barry mantle after he had died in the end of JL trilogy. The villain would be Mr Element. There would also be the introduction of Hunter Zolomon, who would be establish as Wally friend and ally. 2nd film - It would showcase Zolomon fall to the dark side and his transformation into Zoom; 3rd film - It would be adaptation of terminal velocity, introducting Bart Allen, who cames to the future to warn Flash about the event caused by the Turtle Man that will result in the death of Linda Park. In order to prevent this, Wally would try to find ways to become even more faster, resulting in him sacrificing himself in the climax to save Linda and end up in the Speed force, being chased by Black Flash. However, with the help of Barry and Jay (who died in the previous movie), Wally would be able to defeat the Black Flash and return to life, reuniting with Linda and his friends.

Cool video. Thanks for making it. Barry Allen Flash was always one of my favorites and for a while my #1 (so you can imagine how gutted I was when Crisis killed him of; part of the reason I got out of comics). His mother's murder I don't recall, so I'm guessing that's post-Crisis? (I'm pretty sure his mom and dad even appeared now and then). I know he's gotten a rep as being bland, but its nice to see someone point out his positives. DCAU's seemed like they just slapped on one of the 80's/90's "sarcastic immature guy" cookie cutters. Done well, but still everywhere. Like the Spider-Man personality, but the one that in-universe her fakes during fights as a strategy to throw off-guard villains. Back then the only ones I recall having for real were comedy kr parody characters, so how it became a go-to norm, I've no idea. Oddly enough, the closest live action Barry so far, for me, is the CW's Jay Garrick by (ironically) Shipp (double irony because his TV show, while great, was also not MY Barry).

I do not think doing flashpoint first is in theory a bad idea since it makes sense that barry would have to learn early on that just because he can change the past does not mean he should and flashpoint paradox was not a sequel to another animated flash film and that was great and established everything we needed to know about barry, but the film still could end up being terrible.
