*Cue Cruisin' Along by Chris Doerksen* Summoning Salt: He may have pursued this without any specific routing, he may have played it safe in the levels where he earned White Mushrooms, and the rules of any% White Mushroom hadn't been fully established, so he didn't use any warp whistles strategically to skip some of the bosses, but this was still a great, archetypal Mitchflowerpower run, full of banter, theory crafting, and, of course, top-tier Super Mario Bros 3 play. It was an excellent start to Any% All Mushroom Houses. And the run caught the eye of one legendary runner. His name... was Matt Turk.

This one makes sense since it has a concrete goal, but I think as a category dropping the 100% requirement would be a substantial improvement. Having to get the frog suit is good, and I'm wondering how best to use whistles, in the event level completion is removed.

I know you were talking about using a P-wing in 5-5, which makes a lot of sense, but just in case that doesn't work out for whatever reason, I want to mention that you can grab more than one coin each time you drop down on one of those donut blocks. If you get two each time, you cut in half the number of blocks you have to wait for. Anyway, excellent run, and GG on getting 7-7!

While you probably won't come back to it, the any% feels like a better home for all white mushrooms putting it in line with things like all forts; it could also open up options to do something like game over after 7-2 white mushroom to do 7-1 wrong warp to finish.

This was fun to watch, I never got a White Mushroom House as a kid and only found out about it years later online. I do think the Anchor is such a waste of space though, no one who plays at even a high-casual level dies on the airships. I was thinking what power up could they have used instead and honestly, if they gave a you a hammer in World 1 and World 2, it would allow for a true 100% run as you could get the card game in World 3 and then the Mushroom House in World 4. If I had to make up an item though that is not too impractical and would not involve extensive code like adding a level power up, I think a key could have been awesome that you could use to unlock the locks without having to do the castles, that would be great on any% runs.

I’m curious about world 8 not having a White Mushroom House. Presumably it would give you an anchor (which isn’t useful since the airship is immobile), but I’m curious if there are any leftovers in the code that suggest one might have been planned. You mentioned that the card matching game stops appearing as well-that implies some world specific map logic exists in the code. It’d be interesting to look into that.

I love the concept of this sub-category. I really appreciate sub-categories were there is a failure condition that forces a reset. Obtaining the WHITE HOUSES alone is a challenge and with the most minor of mistake is like a coin flip away... so the skill to hit all is epic!

As a kid, I always wanted the ship anchor. It was like some mythical beast. I had no idea how to get it, or the white mushroom houses, but I knew of them. I didn't get the house in world 1 until I read about it on the internet in like 2006. I was disappointed it was just a P-Wing. I finally got the anchor a few years later... and was sorely disappointed by it. All that hype over so many years ramped up my expectations to impossible levels. Even though I knew full well what it did.

5-5 I think you can get the coins in the [?] blocks before taking the pipe. Coming out, the [?] blocks reset so you won't have to take the time to grab as many of the coins hanging beneath the tooth-shaped blocks. Never tried it tho so just a hypothesis.

One thing I’d be interested to see you try is recreate the conditions shown on the title cards of the Mario 3 cartoon. Most of the episodes start with a title card with the map from that episode’s relevant world in the background. It would be interesting to try and recreate the power-up/score/coin/etc. state.

How can we not dissociate Bros and Coin Ships? Coin ships take much longer, meaning the record would have enough disparity for separate recognition. Additionally, coin shops have spawning requirements, requiring additional time taken in certain levels to ensure they spawn, just like white mushrooms. If white mushrooms are viable, then so are coin ships. Also, coin ships are cool...

im sure you can break the vertical stack of boxes at the end of 2-3 before getting the p switch and get the mushroom house without collecting the coins the vertical stack would otherwise give you. usless in a speedrun i know but good to know

I played this game when it came out. I didn't know about all these kinds of things until I was an adult. For the ones who are in their 20s, there was no internet when I was a kid. The only way we could find out information about a game was either the school playground or magazines like Nintendo Power. I can remember coming across the pirate ship full of coins and having no idea how in the hell I made that happen. I have a teenage son who will never know the struggle of not knowing how to beat a certain game or level in a game.

99 lives run. No stage farming, no bounce exploit (you will need to gain 1 life from jumping on heads though, and only one). You must gain an extra life from all sources. Block types containing a 1-up (hidden, question mark, and a brick block) 100 coins, gambling stage, 3 matching from finishing stages (not all three types). You may warp back to previous worlds to do stages over again but that is the only way to do stages again.

Great run and I think the category is awesome. For any SMB3 runners it should be attractive since you've already gained a ton of skill in the game that would translate into this category so I think it should blossom. Also, is there a "wear every suit category"? It could be an any% where you have to collect at least 1 of every suit and wear them in at least one level of the game, could be cool! Also also, it could be called the "Men's Wearhouse" category because "you're going to the love the way you look"! 🤣

1-4 Is an autoscoller in the air, so grab that mushroom 2/3 of the way through 1-2, then get a leaf in 1-3 To fly to the end and gain back the small time loss in 1-2. This makes 1-4 easier to deal with. The World 3 level is 3-8. Need I say more? 7-2... Can't get it without getting Froggy.

If you P Wing Bowser’s castle you can go to the close harder Bowser and fly over the wall to the father easier Bowser. I don’t think you can fight both Bowsers though, I think once he appears the screen scrolling locks.

I have a theory why all those clips were given to you, Mitch, in a white mushoroom category. It's because your cerebral waves were in a state of discovering and relaxation in such way that your unconsciousness adjusted your inner game knowledge without interference of expectation, even in a quantum level. You know what they say: observation changes the phenomena. So the way you experience momentum shifts in-game are in agreement with this statement.
