Mitsubishi Colt 1.1i - Rear Drum Brakes Overhaul (HD)

Squeezing noises out of rear drum brakes and close date of MOT check was the reason for an overhaul of the rear brakes. It started great and almost went according to the plan, except that holder bolts broke in both of the brake cylinders and both of the brake pipes twisted themselves while unbolting which led to their destruction... After a couple of days when it was sorted out and the flaring tool was sent back twice to the dealer, the brakes were done, bleeded and the hand brake lever travel was adjusted. The car went through the MOT check and did pass, even though the rear side was about 20% weaker. Hope you'll enjoy the video.

Thanks very much for this mate, a great help! Just a note though, on Mitsubishi's with ABS you're supposed to have the engine running while you bleed the brakes, otherwise you can damage the ABS module. At least that's what all the workshop manuals I've seen have advised.

Thanks Anonymous, yeah, it can be. The abs works for now, did several bleeds of course a nd still ok. But anyway, I will check, thanks again!

@@REBUILDLab yes it helped very well! Maybe a small hint from my side. I used a screw clamp to fix and compress the brake pads, so it was much easier to solve that §#&$$ puzzle of pads, steel springs and brackets ^^

Good question, do not remember, but it was aprox in jan. 2023, so it could be at 170-180.000

Thank you. The brake shoes are from a common shop, they are easy to get as a aftermarket part.

Copper tube diameter is 5 mm, the tube nut is 7 mm, normal thread orientation.

Очень забавно, но зачем нижнию пружину ставить за колодками? Да и ту последнию пружину, верхнию с которой вы с помощью приспособы из гвоздя пыхтели, проще заранее продеть фигурные концом в колоду, а потом с помощью пассатиж легко поставить.

Hi. Hard to translate what you wrote. The lower spring was like that originally, as you can see in the disassembly part of the video. As for the upper spring - the spare part spring was so hard I coudn't put it on, then it broke. So I had to go with the original one and that was the only way I could do that. If you did it 100x of course you can find better ways. Id you have a vodeo on that, would appreciate to look at it. Anyway, thanks for your comment.
